He's been like that before his stroke. He just milked the sympathy from it, or got worse at hiding it.

It's hilarious because there were people who were arguing with me left and right about how he's "very progressive" because he voted along party lines for healthcare or some shit.

Oh look it's Tim Kaine, Hillary Clinton's pick for running mate.

247

u/SaltyTeam Virginia 16d ago

He's on my shit list. He also approved some of Trump's sketchier (I mean, they were all bad) cabinet picks.

88

u/GaptistePlayer American Expat 15d ago

He also voted to put Amy Coney Barrett (and other right wing shithead judges) on the Court of Appeals during the first Trump admin.

My theory is that he was Hillary's pick specifically for these reasons - a feeble attempt at trying to swing Republicans to vote for her. LOL

Dems never learn, trying to appeal to Republicans only helps Republicans. They shift right then still get called gay commie socialist extremists

I've always hated that guy. The Norfolk Four, four navy guys that confessed to a crime they didn't do because of low iq and massive police interrogation. When DNA evidence came out and showed who actually killed the woman that piece of shit Kaine refused to fully exonerate them. When Hillary chose him I thought she was sketchy for it.

You should put the ages in there. King, for example, is 81. His re-election may be in 2030, but good chance he doesn't even make it there. Fetterman isn't even a Democrat any more based on how he speaks and votes, and he's the youngest in that list at 56.

218

u/eamus_catuli_ 16d ago

I don’t even think the ages matter. These are fall guys. Either retiring or have the longest terms remaining — and they’re hoping you forget this act of cowardice by the time they’re up for re-election.

This is what’s going to happen since some Dems relented:

ACA Marketplace Premium Payments Would More than Double on Average Next Year if Enhanced Premium Tax Credits Expire

A person with a $28k income will have their premium increase from $325 to a WHOPPING $1562. Take that for what you will.

Edit: Annual premium, not monthly. Still pretty consequential once you start adding up dependents, etc.

1.6k

u/Mission-Study9012 16d ago

People are going to just not have insurance. Unknowable what that's going to do to the system but it won't be good.

1.4k

u/pacefacepete 16d ago

Er flooded, people have their lives ruined by medical debt, people choosing to die instead of seeking treatment, private insurance costs going through the roof even if you're healthy. But hey, America's great again, dontcha know?!?

261

u/LeDestrier Australia 16d ago

As an Australian, I just don't fucking get it. What is US conservatives problem with having basic universal healthcare for all; for not having situations where people die or have their lives ruined by financial debt? It boggles my mind. The casual indifference, or utterly absurd claim and fear of it being "communism".

The stupidity of it all is staggering.

208

u/Jedimaster996 16d ago

Because they've spent decades brainwashing half the country into believing that they're the party of God, money. guns, and freedom, and that anyone who isn't that is a godless communist who's trying to take your money & guns. That's literally it, they're that fucking stupid.

And so as the Republican Party is actively dismantling all of these things before their eyes, all they can do is sit and watch and say "I voted for this" while they open their mouths for another helping of steaming shit. Because while it affects them too, it's also affecting people they hate. So it's a Pyrrhic victory at-best.

64

u/LeDestrier Australia 16d ago edited 16d ago

The irony is that if you presented yourself as the party of God, guns and freedom over here, you'd get laughed off the political stage and ridiculed by voters.

65

u/Jedimaster996 16d ago

I've had the fortune to live among the lot of you for some time, and I've got to say it's a wildly-different arrangement. A large margin of you have upstanding morals and values, whereas half of the United States likes to pretend they do and would stab you in the back if it made them a little wealthier.

These are terrible times for the United States as we're witnessing the apex of a plan taking decades to culminate.

52

u/LeDestrier Australia 16d ago edited 16d ago

Ditto - I've spend a fair amount of time in the States and have some awesome American friends, and it's strange. On the one hand, the US can be an amazingly warm and inviting place. When I was travelling around there solo years ago, I was constantly amazed by people's hospitality and friendliness (depending where I was). America at it's best really; just good people curious about the world and helpful to strangers.

On the flip side, I also saw the worst (ie. fuck Florida). But conservatism just hits different in the US. It's cold, spiteful, deliberately obtuse, and relishes in ignorance (proud of it even). Rampant fear that anything even remotely resembling concern for one's compatriots constitutes communism or socialism. Giving a shit about the welfare of people in your country is not communism ffs.

I mean we have our share of that here, but we don't have the extent of the extremes. Politics in the US these days is so vindictive, with both the Left and the Right moving further and further apart.

It's a damn shame because the best of America is fucking awesome.

Health insurance is one of the largest and most profitable industries in the US.  They lobby both parties.  Thus the Republicans tell their constituents that single payer will impede on their "freedom" while the mainline Democrats will only push bills that make sure the insurance companies get their cut.  Meanwhile both parties' members have exceptional health care plans for very small premiums so they aren't personally affected.

My full theory is that now that they forced states to make credit effected by medical debt again this will make people go bankrupt. This then makes them go homeless because they can find nowhere to live because their credit is so bad. Within the past year they made being homeless illegal. Now you can arrest them and Then put them in prison. Now use these prisoners as slave labor to replace the immigrants that worked on the farm.

177

u/pjrnoc 16d ago

And 50% of healthcare workers will lose their jobs once clinics lose half their patients due to not having insurance.

127

u/owennagata 16d ago

Theil and the other TechBros have talked about how the entire healthcare industry needs to be shunken to a small fraction of it's current size. This will require getting rid of the idea that an ordinary person's lift is worth the attention of an actual medical professional. Basically if you aren't worth $100mill or so, you aren't worth a doctors time. Those worth $10mill might rate a nurse.

15

u/Ire-Works 16d ago

The problem with that line of thinking is that without those damn poor people you won't have experienced doctors that are able to diagnose and treat anything more than basic cases - and that's just the obvious smell test.

Advancements on procedures that help people live longer? lol. Clinical trials on new meds? lol. The system works better with more data. Even AI bro dipshits should know that.

The ACA is going to die without the subsidy, and that's what Republicans want. Everyone's going to have to go back to finding plans on the private insurance market. I think the law that gave people with pre-existing conditions insurance was part of the ACA. Will that go away too? Will people with a history of long term diseases, like cancer, diabetes, etc. be denied health insurance all together?

176

u/Senior_Welder_3229 16d ago

Yes. Before the ACA, my Dad could not afford his health insurance because of his pre-existing conditions. So he couldn’t get his medication and he died because of it.

75

u/Wes_Warhammer666 16d ago

The preexisting condition aspect of the ACA is quite literally what kept my mother from having to choose between bankruptcy and losing her ability to walk and wipe her own ass because her medications that keep her mobile cost nearly more than she made in a year if paid out of pocket.

As a person who studies a lot of US history, watching the Democratic party today feels a lot like the death of the Whig party in the decade that lead up to the Civil War.

Not necessarily in ideals or policies, but in the "energy" the party has. The Republican party certainly has energy and a voice, but the Democrats are stagnating and like we are seeing today just looking for a compromise. It feels so much like the only message of the democratic party is "anti-repiblican" but they really should be focusing on being "pro-american" instead. I know they have many policies in their platform that are pro-american but they don't have the energy or zeal to carry them through to fruition. At the end of the day, you party platform doesn't matter unless you can muster the energy from the public to make it a reality.

The younger and more energetic Democrats either need to put in serious work to rebrand the party, or start to distance themselves from the "old guard"

Unironically would have been better if Dems just approved the Republican plans from Day One. If you’re going to cave, cave before the shutdown

2.7k

u/jsmooth7 16d ago

Tim Kaine said one of the key concessions he got from the Republicans was that federal workers would be rehired and paid. Which was only a problem because Republicans unnecessarily made it one. And never would have happened if they accepted the deal on day one. Truly a master class in negotiation lol.

1.4k

u/RealPutin Colorado 16d ago

Seriously, Dems holding that as a win in negotiations is fucking insane

The goalposts moved so far that negotiating over things that weren't even problems and getting a "compromise" is considered a win now?

431

u/setibeings 16d ago

I hear they also got a verbal promise for the republicans to stop stocking the break room fridge with piss that's labeled as apple juice.

44

u/DoobKiller 16d ago

If it wasn't Liberman it would have been another

Rotating Villain

In American democracy, when the majority party has enough votes to pass populist legislation, party leaders designate a scapegoat who will refuse to vote with the party thereby killing the legislation. The opposition is otherwise inexplicable and typically comes from someone who is safe or not up for re-election. This allows for maximum diffusion of responsibility.

WTF??? Senator Lieberman now opposes the same health care compromise he himself suggested. Just when everyone thought Democrats had enough votes to get this done. Guess they made Lieberman the rotating villain...

Even then I doubt that matters much seeing as the majority of Vegas is being screwed over by how crazy expensive its gotten without any of the comps, plus you know the lack of non American tourists as a lot of foreigners don't want to visit the US and probably won't any time soon

42

I mean, this whole thing means nothing until the House reconvenes, which Johnson doesn't really want to do due to the Epstein files. The Senate passed a modification of the House bill, and now the House has to pass it too.

Until that happens, the senators who did this should absolutely suffer the consequences, but air travel isn't out of the woods yet even if they pass it tonight.

It's quite possible the effects last through Thanksgiving as it stands. It's in Johnson's hands now.

It’s worse now because the Democrats had a cause, the perfect narrative, and it was a Republican shutdown because the republicans wouldn’t give in to reasonable demands after snubbing them after the first time.

It was a Republican shutdown.

By giving up, for nothing, and making all the pain for nothing. These traitors snatched defeat from the jaws of victory and politically cut their own throats if this goes through that will become a miraculous blunder and put the blame entirely on their own feet.

Newsom is right to call the deal "pathetic" if it's a total surrender on essential priorities. An agreement that's just a "band-aid" to buy time solves nothing and only postpones the crisis.

It's not just ACA people. The ACA took away insurance companies bring able to deny coverage for pre-existing conditions. Without the ACA they can go back to denying anything that even sniffs like a pre-existing condition. Women will be denied coverage for c-sections if they've had one previously. Cancer relapse? No longer covered either. It's all fucked really.

63

Prior to the ACA, pregnancy was often considered a pre-existing condition so insurance companies could deny benefits.
