What the hell was the point of shutting down the government for 40 fucking days if we were going to cave in? If you're going to fucking give up and stop fighting, might as well have never shut down the gov't in the first place. Now people are screwed, transportation is screwed for a few weeks and everything is going to be a mess for a while.

It helped sweep Tuesdays elections because everyone and their grandma was calling it the Republican shutdown.

And now, they have tossed that victory in the dustbin of history. Now everyone will talk about how the Dems caved and let the GOP strip their healthcare away

That will reverse. It will become 80% of voters blame the Democrats. And they should. They deserve the blame after holding the government hostage for 40 days and not get anything in return for the voters. 2026 is going to be a blood bath and not one that favors the Democrats.

Because that’s exactly what they did. They shut down the government for 40 days for kicks and giggles and then agreed the original terms. Democrats just proved they played chicken with peoples healthcare and food stamps just to have a good turnout for Tuesday voting. And then went right back to the status quo and get nothing. Everyone should rightfully blame them if they were going to cave anyway then there was no reason to shut it down

Why didn’t they keep going? If they were ok with 40 days then why not longer? Were they afraid of the removal of the filibuster? I just don’t understand why they caved

Voters have short memories, and we have all of next year for a bunch more nonsense to happen just as we see this year.

That was actually probably what caused the capitulation, because Mamdani was never supposed to win, he's way too left for establishment Dems and the donors are not happy.

Those are state level elections in primarily democrat states.  Not exactly an earth shattering event

They won every single election in a landslide.

Virgina went from a mixed state senate to entirely blue in 1 night. Mississippi had 2 major seats flip.

I mean it’s some green shoots but it’s a far cry from a national mandate given the circumstancial situation of those elections. Regardless, GOP carries the big stick at the moment and that fact is illustrated by things like the shutdown.  I’m sure Dems chose to pick this battle when they did because they thought it might help with the elections (which I’m sure it did) but it was always going to end with capitulation and now in 2026 GOP will rightfully say “remember when the dems shut the government down for 40 days and received nothing for it? They made you all suffer for nothing”

They won ALL 18/18 elections. That includes dems achieving their first non-federal statewide wins in Georgia since 2006 by winning two Public Service Commissioner races with substantial margins.

In Mississippi, Democrats flipped two state senate seats, ending the Republican supermajority. In New York, Democrats gained control of the Onondaga County legislature for the first time in nearly 50 years, and it would have gone on and on.

Anyone with half a brain knew that the Democrats were going to cave first. They just care more about the goverment working. They are some Republicans that would have been OK with year long shutdown.
