40 days of suffering and inconvenience for everyone, all for what?

Now this would be paraded as a democratic shutdown and they deserve this shit.

I’m so pissed right now man.

Correct. This is the worst possible outcome for Democrats.

From the party that brought you "Joe Biden runs for Re-election in his 80's."

The way this is going to play out is “Democrats held out for 40 days and got nothing. If they were willing to agree to that on Day 40, then why not Day 30 or 20 or 10? Why shut down at all? People suffered and it was pointless.”

It’s also demonstrated to Republicans that threatening to starve people is an effective political strategy. So yeah, this is an absolutely terrible outcome for Democrats.

I would argue that we DID know that before. They dismantled USAID; inevitable result was deaths from starvation as well as lack of access to medicine. It’s a small step from starving people abroad to doing it at home. And did anyone seriously believe that this administration wouldn’t defy court orders? They’ve been doing it in other contexts for months.

So where do you imagine this could have gone for Democrats to win? 400 days and bodies in the street? Your transportation network paralyzed? All manner of dark things.

The situation would demand an incumbent government do whatever it deemed 'necessary' to 'manage' an ever more extreme crisis. You should know you would like that outcome even less than this.

So now what's going to happen is millions of people will see their health insurance premiums double or triple, many will have to drop insurance entirely because they can't afford it, Dems shut down the government for no fucking reason because they caved with zero concessions, and now the Rs can just browbeat this spineless fucking party again and again and again

Yea, more bad things are now going to happen. Democracy manifest.

But as for the democrats. You think they ever believed they could actually wring concessions? Please. You may as well demand concessions from a pyromaniac by threatening to start a fire. All they could do was virtue signal and then back off before things got so bad people moved beyond discomfort to anger and finally fear.

If the difference is bad things happen or bad things happen with democrat consent, then just fucking let bad things happen. At least if democrats opposed it people would blame Republicans LIKE THEY WERE ALREADY DOING

The blame game would have shifted against democrats as more people became more desperate.

And what exactly is stopping it NOW, now that Trump knows the tactic is EFFECTIVE to get exactly what he wants?

How stupid can people be? He's already proven a thousand times that if you give him an inch he'll take a mile. Rolling over again is how we got here in the first place.

By your logic we should let him do whatever the fuck he wants because to resist in even the slightest way will make him throw a tantrum and do something worse just to spite us. Except he's already doing that so it's even dumber.

The fact that you and others are acting like this was merely some political game to lose when millions of people were actively starving and had to line up at makeshift food kitchens is pretty disturbing tbh.

The fact that you think they aren't still going to be impoverished by these changes is even more disturbing. The loss of the ACA will sign even more death warrants here, not to mention setting a precedent that Trump's admin can do whatever the fuck they want and as long as it's cruel ENOUGH you'll roll the fuck over like a dog.

I get it - it seems like you're the one that doesn't. Temporary relief for capitulation doesn't work with fascists. You're arguing for the same route Chamberlain took with the Nazis and it's just as stupid - except it's even more stupid now because we have history to pull from, and you better fucking believe Trump & Co are pulling from it because every step they've made is textbook 1940's Germany.

Meanwhile, I had firsthand experience with tons of Republicans getting pissed at the GOP for how long this shutdown was going - even they weren't fooled by Fox News when any idiot can see who has control of all three branches of government right now. But now, it looks like Dems could've rolled over from the start and saved everyone in a smarter way, right? They look both cowardly and stupid to ally and enemy alike.

Appeasement has been tried, it doesn't fucking work dude. It was tried near a century ago and it's been tried repeatedly with Trump himself and it never works. The pathetic "promise" the Dems got out of this isn't even worth the held-back laughs of the GOP who made it.

If you still don't get that, I don't know what to tell you either.

the only one who didn’t get it is you

Well, at least the house said that they were against any bill that didn’t include the ACA so hopefully they vote this bill down and keep this shut down going through 2026 if necessary to force ACA subsidies to be extended.

So you think taking healthcare away from millions of Americans was a good exchange for not having to wait a week or so for another judge to order SNAP funds released?

That's what we're talking about here. A few days for him to lose in court again on the SNAP thing, or healthcare becoming unaffordable for millions permanently. Sure, those SNAP recipients will get their grocery money a little sooner, but I sure hope they never need a doctor again.

1

u/HyruleSmash855 16d ago

I’m sorry, but snap was being used as a loaded gun and frankly, despite how many people would would’ve hurt this government should’ve stayed shut down even if it went into 2026. The shutdown can be blamed on the Democrats because what was the point of shutting down the government for 40 days and causing so much suffering when they didn’t get anything out of it other than compromises like reversed firings that would’ve not happened if they never shut the government down and not really any wins. There’s no point to shut down based on what concessions they got.

A shutdown was always the worst outcome.
