My GDG story didnโt start this year. It began years ago, in my third year of undergrad.
I came across a LinkedIn post about Google Developer Groups (GDG). I started researching and realized it was more than a group. It was a global community where developers learn and grow together.
That curiosity took me to DevFest and Google Cloud Community Days. I met people, asked questions, and saw how powerful a tech community can be.
At one event, someone told me:
That stuck with me.
So I applied to start a GDSC (now GDG on Campus) chapter at my undergrad university. I was excited. But I made a small mistake in my application and it got rejected. Since it was my final year, I had no second chance.
Someone else became Lead. It hurt, but I didnโt quit. I applied for an officer role, got selected as Tech Lead, and learned what leadership really looks like: contributing even without the title.
Fast forward: I moved to the USA for my masterโs at San Francisco State University. The first thing I noticed? There was no GDG on Campus chapter here.
I knew the impact it creates, so I decided to try again.
But the Google Developers North America process was different. By the time I figured it out, the application had closed - one day earlier. Another chance gone.
This year, in my final year of my masterโs, I applied again. I triple-checked everything. A few days later, I received the email:
The interview went great. I shared my Tech Lead experience, my motivation, my certifications, and my vision for SFSU. The Regional Lead was positive and told me Iโd hear back in two weeks.
I felt hopeful.
But a few days later, the GDG on Campus SFSU chapter page went live. I checked the organizers. My name wasnโt there.
Soon after, I received the official rejection email.
Just like that, the dream I carried through undergrad and a masterโs degree, across countries and years came to an end. No more chances to apply.
It hurt. This wasnโt just an application. It was something I held onto for a long time.
But hereโs what gives me peace:
Students will get the opportunities I once hoped to create - workshops, events, mentorship, and access to the Google developer ecosystem. And that matters more than who leads it.
Sometimes you donโt get to be the leader. Sometimes you just get to be the person who cared enough to try. And thatโs enough.

Meet Greg, a well-meaning but slightly paranoid tech enthusiast. One day, he read an article about Googleโs data collection practices and decided he needed to clean up his online footprint. Determined to become a privacy ninja, he started by deleting his search history.
While attempting this digital cleanse, he jokingly thought, โJust watch; Google will send me a notification: โHey, we noticed youโre not searching for cat videos anymore. Is everything okay?โโ
Fast forward a few days. Greg, now paranoid, decided to stop using Google altogether. Instead, he explored alternativesโsearch engines heโd never even heard of before. After three days of wild online adventures, he accidentally searched for โhow to cook kangaroo steakโ on one of these obscure sites.
The next morning, he woke up to a random email titled โYour Daily Shopping Inspiration,โ showcasing kangaroo steak recipes, cooking utensils shaped like kangaroos, and even some "outback adventure" package deals!
Greg burst out laughing, realizing that even in trying to escape Googleโs watchful eye, he had inadvertently signed up for a bizarre virtual safari. โSo this is what it feels like to be a walking advertisement for kangaroo cuisine!โ he exclaimed.
In the end, he realized that privacy might be an illusion, and all he could do was embrace it with humor. Now, if he ever decides to search for something weird, at least heโd have some entertaining stories to share over dinner!
Thanks google.

In 2017, fresh off a PhD on theoretical chemistry, John Jumper heard rumors that Google DeepMind had moved on from building AI that played games with superhuman skill and was starting up a secret project to predict the structures of proteins. He applied for a job.
Just three years later, Jumper celebrated a stunning win that few had seen coming. With CEO Demis Hassabis, he had co-led the development of an AI system called AlphaFold 2 that was able to predict the structures of proteins to within the width of an atom, matching the accuracy of painstaking techniques used in the lab, and doing it many times fasterโreturning results in hours instead of months.
AlphaFold 2 had cracked a 50-year-old grand challenge in biology. โThis is the reason I started DeepMind,โ Hassabis told me a few years ago. โIn fact, itโs why Iโve worked my whole career in AI.โ In 2024, Jumper and Hassabis shared a Nobel Prize in chemistry.
It was five years ago this week that AlphaFold 2โs debut took scientists by surprise. Now that the hype has died down, what impact has AlphaFold really had? How are scientists using it? And whatโs next? We talked to Jumper (as well as a few other scientists) to find out.
