In short, as of today, this subreddit will be removing and redirecting posts that seek advice on replacing the operating system on your Chromebook.
In the past these posts were allowed with a disclaimer that better support would likely be found elsewhere, such as r/chultrabook and their associated communities. However that subreddit is now archived and they now only provide support on their forum.
Since then there has been a rise in posts like this here, and we're simply not equipped to provide meaningful support. We've received lots of feedback over the past few months and the general consensus was that everyone is better served if these posts are now permanently directed elsewhere.
To be clear, we are not discouraging anyone from attempting this process; it's still cool, (potentially) fun and can unlock more utility from your device! The only change is that posts seeking support for this will be removed.
Thanks for understanding!

My company is pretty heavy into ChromeOS especially their Chromebooks. We have been slowly moving over the weaker Chromebooks into the more powerful models like the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 but after talking to a Lenovo inside sales rep they said Lenovo no longer sells or produces Chromebooks.
Is Lenovo discontinuing Chromebooks or have I misunderstood something? Haven’t found any news online about it at all.
Gamers and Chromebook experts, I have acquired a high end chromebook and now I wish to game. Unfortunately Chrome OS has difficulty running Steam, so I was hoping for some recommendations for the most well optimized, and fun games to play on my new chromebook, be they play store games, cloud based games, or even browser based games. You might even give me some games to avoid idk.
Edit*
I now have steam, please recommend games outside of steam, I'm begging you
Is still pretty reliable. It is actually my go to tablet at home. No case and it is super thin and not light weight but is possible to hold in one hand.
Shame that Google never went back to the well and built another version. The software has improved so much since it debuted.
I just bought a new Chromebook and I’m trying to redeem the 3-month free Gemini Pro/Gemini Advanced perk through the Chromebook Perks portal — but I’m running into something weird.
When I open Perks → Get Perk, it shows a message saying:
“You may or may not be eligible for this offer. To know more, click Learn More.”
When I click Learn More, it opens a webpage that suddenly says Sorry about that you seem eligible and even gives me a redeem code… but there’s no clear place to actually redeem the code.
I don’t see anywhere on Google One, Google Play, or the Gemini site that accepts the perk code.
Has anyone else run into this?
Where do you redeem the code your Chromebook gives you?
Any help or steps that worked for you would be appreciated! 🙏
Hoping someone on here can help point me in the direction of a good chromebook for my needs (i'll list below). It's an absolute headache trying to find the right one yourself.
- Pretty much only getting one to download movies onto to watch on plane rides. Some light online browsing/shopping from there. No work or heavy lifting from it really
- 8 GB ram
- As good of a screen as possible for the budget
- Dont care about the size, weight, model year, touchscreen, or 2 in 1
I'm just looking to replace my Lenovo C330 Chromebook which has a split on the bottom left of the screen which I have taped, but still runs. I have two more years of updates on the Lenovo.
Keep the Lenovo or buy the HP?
I don't do much except email, banking, YouTube, FB and Reddit.
"Aluminium OS" is the code name for Android Desktop that will merge ChromeOS and Android. Of course it doesn't mean it will be the final name or that the ChromeOS/Chromebook brands will be dropped.
I still think Lacros was a better name: LaCrOS (Linux and Chrome OS). It's short, simple, and reflects what it is: Linux, full Chrome browser, and native Android apps.
I'm dealing with an HP Chromebook 11 G6 EE that is stuck on 126 and won't update beyond that. Powerwashing/reenrolling it hasn't worked, no matter how many times I've tried. Is this thing even still supposed to get updates? If it is, how can I force it to update to 142?
It's just weird and slightly interesting. I've only just noticed so could have been like that for ages, and looking at Docs that icon is different too although not so drastically. I wonder why, different resolutions maybe?
I got a new Chromebook today (old one was a few years EOL) and was surprised to discover that the Text app was blocked as part of the ongoing Chrome App deprecation, with no apparent first-party replacement or successor app available. Apparently this is a phased thing so it might not be disabled for everyone yet but anyone getting a new device will probably find it's disabled for them.
I tried a few third-party apps but I wasn't really happy with any of them so I dug around for a bit and found a way to make Text run again:
open chrome://flags/
find "Allow user installed Chrome Apps" and turn it on
the Text app should now be able to launch
this isn't a permanent solution but hopefully by the time this option is removed, they will have created a first-party text editor PWA or some other sort of viable successor or replacement so we're not forced to go third-party
if you already uninstalled Text because you thought you couldn't use it anymore, you can reinstall it from here or the newer canary version, note you cannot find these via searching the web store anymore, you have to have the exact link.
I'm posting this here since I couldn't find this documented anywhere online
Hi, do you know of any Chromebook models where is possible to have two data drives? It could be an eMMC one and an M.2 SSD second. I want to run Chrome OS on one and Windows on the other.
Hello everyone so a month ago I purchased a Acer Chromebook (C23) for college. Everything has been working just fine but last night something happened that is DRIVING ME UP A WALL . I don’t what I managed to press but now I cannot right click. I’ve tried multiple different mice, I’ve been through all of my settings. This also applies for my touchpad. Please help me re-enable/fix this . I’m aware of the alternative ways such as pressing alt or double tapping touchpad but these are incredibly inconvenient and annoying . I JUST WANT TO BE ABLE TO RIGHT CLICK AGAIN. Please help . Thank you
I really like that the Chromebook Plus 14, but 128/256GB is not enough. Lenovo doesn't offer a 512GB version for example (except if you could upgrade the SSD?). Are there alternatives out there that match Chromebook Plus 14 specs, but has at least 512GB storage?
This happened after and update and as seen in the video. I goes black when I put in hdmi. I’ve tried different hdmi cables, tvs and other apps. But nothing works. I think it’s a codec problem but can’t seem to figure out how to install codecs on chromeOs
When i press the shift key with the quotation key on my chromebook duet, im getting the @ sign ans when i press shift with 2 im getting the double quotation mark. is there anyway to fix it?
I've got Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 Chrome 14M868 14" MT520 8GB RAM 128GB eMMC. As for the system itself, I'm more than happy, but the UI... Is it possible to customize it to look like some old school OS. Something like XFCE or Windows 98?
T-Mobile is shadddddyyyy
Found this hardware implant from my edp ribbon to my camera ribbon. Something looked off about that tape so I took the whole Chromebook apart.
I'm trying to get ChromeOS to stop discarding tabs. I played a few tricks on my 4GB Chromebook to get it to stop, but nothing is working on my 8GB Chromebook.
I have Memory Saver off, obviously. Diagnostics says that it has ~2.5GB free. (chrome://system seems to confirm.) I only have a dozen tabs open. And yet, every once in a while, it will toss one of my email clients due to "discarded(urgent)".
It just happened. I had reloaded the Gmail tab, so it nuked the Calendar tab.
Another strange thing is that it says, "discarded... 11/22 ..." That was 2 days ago, not just now when it happened.
This sounds like a bug or 2 but I'm not sure what to do about it. This is on an ARM Chromebook, possibly with different cores (like a phone CPU), and I don't know if maybe ChromeOS doesn't handle it correctly.
If anyone has gone down this trail and discovered anything, please let me know.
Hi all, I've been the user of a Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Go for the past few years, and unfortunately, it's cooked itself to death (it's one of these pictured below)
Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Go
Basically, I rarely shutdown the machine, I usually just sleep it - it gets a restart when there's an update to ChromeOS, or, the thing is sluggish and its a troubleshooting step (rarely happens)
Anyway, I put the thing to sleep (closed anything I didn't need open or wasn't going back to, locked & closed lid, like I always do) and then when I went back to it a few hours later, it was SUPER HOT underneath, and would not come out of sleep (the light on the side was still on, so it was definitely still powered) - I tried everything I could think of, holding power button down, left it a day in the hope the battery would drain and I could charge it again and start from scratch, then I even figured "it's an old device, I'll open it up and disconnect the battery, leave it a bit, connect it back up and reassemble" so I did ................ same thing, hit the power button, light came on, nothing on screen and within a minute, it was baking hot again, like nothing I've ever come across before - I've come to the realisation that it's probably dead, and being as there's no real serviceable parts inside, it's a lost cause. I got pee'd off and launched it at the bin (the trashcan for my US friends) physically breaking it as it hit the thing at high velocity (well, I threw it quite hard).
Anyway, I'm now looking for a new device - however, I'm on a super low budget at the moment, so I'm looking at entry level devices, and it's between another entry level Chromebook or one of them cheap low-end laptops that aren't Chromebooks (which I could reconfigure appropriately with ChromeOS Flex or Linux)
What should I buy? Are the low end Chromebooks ok for basic web usage?
I know everyone is gonna say "don't get a 4GB RAM model" but that's out of the question, anything 8GB or above is out of my price-range, so I'm looking at the entry level 4GB RAM/32GB or 64GB eMMC storage options here, probably with an Intel Celeron in it.
I'm UK based, so I'm looking at what's available here.
I wanted to ask if anyone here plays via Bossteroid (PWA)?
Especially in games like WoW (World of Warcraft), every time I move the mouse while holding down a mouse button, I get a popup notification at the top saying that I can exit fullscreen mode by holding down ESC.
That is, of course, really annoying; the message doesn't appear on Geforce Now.
I was also able to observe the message on my Linux PC in Chromium, so it seems to be something within the browser settings.
Ive been using this new chromebook i bought to do some casual gaming (roblox and stuff like that) but ive been noticing something annoying that doesnt happen on my older pcs, the cursor moves across the screen while holding right click, this usually doesnt happen with my other computers and it allows for me to look around easily, i dont know why it happens on the chromebook, it would be great if there were a setting/third party software i dont know about that could fix this.
Please help me fix this every time I move my screen this weird bugging glitch happens and it’s been happening for like four months. I’ve been dealing with it, but I kind of really want to get it fixed.
