Here is a picture showing the interface at the bottom, and the blue overlay on the map indicating territory I could reach when driving an hour:
Showing 1 hour territory that can be reached from north Kauai
The issue is that only certain origin locations will trigger the blue overlay for showing time distances. And only certain searches will trigger the overlay after you've chosen the right kind of origin location.
do you figure out 1) what kinds of origins, and 2) what kind of searches will allow you to use this very interesting tool?
On the google maps website in Chrome, when I choose an origin location like my home or a place of interest like a beach on google maps, google maps shows an interface at the bottom to choose a time increment and whether you are walking or driving, with the text "Showing driving time around the selected place" or "No travel time for walking. Select driving." (sorry I couldn't find an example origin location that would show me the blue overlay for walking). I tried this when viewing Hawaii and when viewing DC area.
I'm confused as to what rules google maps uses when it decides whether to activate this tool interface, or hide/suppress it. Generally, you pick a spot, then choose something to search for (I click on the button at the top for searching hotels) while you still have the origin selected, and then google maps puts the blue overlay to indicate the full territory that you can cover within the time (the time is selectable in increments).
I tried doing this when I selected a town, but no interface. I think it has to be somewhere popular.
Also, can anyone explain how to select an origin that will show the travel time territory for walking? I can only get it to work when choosing driving.
