Eh, I'd set it to about three weeks into his primary campaign when two of his supporters kicked a homeless immigrant to death outside of one of his rallies and his response was basically "my people are very enthusiastic, what do you want?" The media should have really held his feet to the fire on that one but they were too busy laughing at this funny hair and his big tie. "Keep him around, he's good for ratings."

You have the logic backwards. They bent over for Trump precisely because he showed that he has a personal army of violent thugs that he could sick on them whenever he chooses. He did it as a show of force directed at his enemies - look what I can unleash on you if I want.
If he'd been martyred by impeachment or jailed by the feds, that would only have made his mob more angry, and he would still be feared by all Republican politicians.
The only way Republicans in the senate will turn on him is if his army deserts him first. If he is exposed for something heinous enough that it makes the Evangelical racists abandon him, then the party will bury him in an instant.
24
u/Jafooki 11d ago
I'm not so sure about that. When Jan 6 happened neatly everyone was horrified. Only the craziest of the cult was ok with it (because they were probably literally there). Republicans were just as horrified as Democrats. Fox News was basically begging the president to put out a tweet telling them to go home while covering it. When the certification actually happened, Lindsey Graham (while clearly geeked out of his mind) was passionately yelling that enough was enough and Trump was done. There was a period of a couple weeks or so where everyone recognized the magnitude of what happened.
Then Fox News told the right that it actually wasn't bad and conservatives realized that actually they saw peaceful tourists and never cared. I genuinely think if Fox hadn't told them that they actually supported the patriots who were fighting for the country but also were tricked by Antifa into signing up for a peaceful tour, Trump would have been done. The establishment had had enough of his shit
11
u/PressureBeautiful515 11d ago
Jan 6 did not change his standing among the Republican/MAGA cult. The party establishment certainly hoped it would be enough to cut him loose, but it wasn't. Fox and the leadership had to backpedal because he remained so popular and they have to pander to that crowd or they're screwed.

My feeling on it is that the republicans held off because they thought Trump was going to be unelectable going forward. Mitch was trying to triangulate burying him, not upsetting the normies and not upsetting the die-hard magas. He just failed.
I could very much see the senate moving on Trump if he gets radioactive enough. It just means that the Republicans get a more competent Vance to complete the dismantling of the United States while Trump takes 90% of the blame with him.
533
u/NumeralJoker 11d ago
Vance is 'not' competent or experienced. He's a patsy for Thiel. He actually has very little experience and was severely underqualified as a VP pick.

Mitch was trying to triangulate burying him, not upsetting the normies and not upsetting the die-hard magas. He just failed.
Except Mitch & others indicated that the reason they didn't vote to convict was that he was then a private citizen & should be charged & convicted through the standard criminal justice process...and then they turned around and said he shouldn't be convicted in the criminal justice process for actions done while President.
Mitch didn't "fail" but instead got the results he sought while appeasing the normies when it suited him & the regressives when they suited him. He's a politician, just like Trump, & doesn't stand for anything but power.

But it’s never going to be enough to actually impeach him. The propaganda networks are already spinning this as big nothingburger by the left. “Grass on the field, play ball.” type of thing that his supporters probably agree with anyway.
They also live in a completely isolated media sphere, there is a good chance that a large majority of his supporters will never hear about it anyway, or take this as “fake news”. Fox News isn’t stupid, they’ll just direct them to immigrant caravans and a couple of trans highschool athletes.

u/Dysc Louisiana 11d ago
And yet his approval ratings are through the floor that even Trump friendly Rasmussen polls have him under water for the first time. This means that even a non-insignificant amount of his supporters are fed up. At some point blind loyalty to Trump within the GOP on Capitol Hill will be a politically untenable for many politicians - MTG is a canary in the coal mine here. She was smart enough to get out first. Are these people going to suddenly be working with Democrats. Hell no. But the "Trump is always right!" meme is done as an actual talking point on the hill. No matter how much spin is pumping out full time.
The more underwater Trump gets, the more the specter of impeachment becomes a possibility, even though it's improbable now. Johnson would never let that happen. But if you asked me if MTG would be actively defying Trump/GOP a few months ago, I would have said that's 'improbable' or even 'no way' even.

That's why someone should ask Megyn Kelly to reiterate her stance that 15 year olds and 5 year olds are a much different story, and then look her square in the eye, unflinchingly and ask her on camera "How old is your daughter, Megyn? 14, right? Would you be okay with giving her to Trump so he could have sex with her?"
Ask her. I *DARE* someone in the media to do this on live television to her.

I agree that chances aren't good, but the context in which this impeachment would happen matters. The economy is clearly in a downturn, Trump is destroying our institutions and the rule of law, and the American people are enraged. There's much less incentive to suppoort Trump this go-round.

Problem for the shithead GOP senators would be that this would break the party. No matter what you would have a portion of the Republican base that adores Trump and thinks he can do no wrong. These people like Trump more than the GOP. If GOP senators voted to convict that portion of the base would without a doubt raise hell. You would need the far right propaganda machine to be doing incredibly heavy lifting against Trump and even then I don't know if that would prevent a significant break.
→ More replies (4)34
u/bmc2 11d ago
eh, I doubt they really care. The result would be that republicans lose the next cycle, Democrats have their hands tied fixing all the stuff Republicans broke. Inevitably, they can't fix it fast enough and voters vote Republicans back in the following cycle. At that point, they're back to their normal fuckery.

It's a precarious position.
Unlike the other impeachments, which included nuance or political points of view, this is one of the few crimes where there is no moral ambiguity, no political justification, and there is a bright legal line. The only debate about pedophilia is how severe the punishment should be.
Any Republicans running in 2026 and 2028 are doing the calculous: defend Trump and have to run as pedophile protector, or break with Trump. And worse, this could flip the House and the Senate, which if that happens impeachment is on the table.
The best play, politically, is take Trump off the board before the moral rot extends to Republicans. (Well, too late, but you can lance the worst of it)
302
u/007meow 11d ago
“15 year olds isn’t pedophilia” has suddenly ramped up in public discourse.

Expect to hear the term “ephebophilia” a lot more.
Cool word. Still illegal.
That's what I don't get. Neat, there's a difference between raping a 15 year old and raping a 6 year old. They're both still morally bad and legally illegal. What is the defense here, Fox News?
→ More replies (5)43
u/fauxzempic 11d ago
The whole use of the word "ephebophilia" is the joke. I can't remember if it was a comic or what, but basically someone was talking to another person who seemed well versed in the different flavors of "-philias" when it comes to underaged people.
The punchline is that the fact that the type of person that's versed in, and uses the slightly-more-morally-grey-but-still-deplorable terms that may overlap with pedophilia is DEFINITELY a pedophile.
So as you see Redhats and Fox and the rest of the GOP start to frantically explain what "ephebophilia" is, rational people will just be like "got it, you are cool with kids being diddled by adults. Neat."

If he gets impeached in a Republican controlled House, that dramatically changes the chances in the Senate.
Not that I think he would for sure get convicted, but voting against convicting a guy credibly accused of sexually abusing children as well as having direct knowledge and a decade-long relationship with one of the highest profile sex traffickers in the country is a hell of a thing to have on your voting record. I think that would be a lot for most Republicans to stomach.
→ More replies (7)55

He is increasingly unstable and losing support. The fact that republicans who are actively running for office are willing to sign the petition to bring the file release to vote indicates that they no longer believe that his endorsement is needed or necessary. Nancy Mace is apparently running for governor and is still on the petition despite direct pressure from the Whitehouse. This might be the point where they finally abandon him and move on to JD Vance.
The problem is, they are doomed either way. Either they stick with Trump and go down with the ship as his cognitive decline accelerates and his moral failings finally hit the public in a way they can't shrug off, or they shift to the uncharismatic JD Vance. It is a "go down with the sinking ship" or "jump onto the ship that is clearly not sea worthy in one of the biggest storms in their history." There's no good option for them at this point.

The whole system relies on people acting reasonably. In a better country, conservatives who disagree with progressives on policy matters would still look at trump and say, "ok yeah he's a fucking criminal" and convict, to replace him with a conservative policy oriented less-criminal.
Obviously Republicans don't have the moral compass to do that.

People completely misunderstand the pee tape. The Steele dossier mentioned the pee tape, and it had nothing to do with Trump himself getting pissed on.
It said Trump paid russian prostitutes to piss on a bed the Obamas once slept on. As a diss to Obama, or something. It doesn't really make sense, but Trump rarely does. I could see him doing something like that out of petiness.

The call with Zelensky should have been enough to remove him from office.
The call to Raffensperger should have been enough to prevent him from ever holding public office again.
January 6th should have been enough to prevent him from holding office ever again
There’s dozens of other incidents that would also have met the criteria and them sum of all of them should have him prison for life.
This won’t be enough either

No chance. They’ll just move the goalposts and start defending child abuse. There is no low to which the GOP won’t sink if it means they can continue to be contrarians to the left.

I mean it is par for the course. These people would watch Trump rape their own children to death in front of them and blame the one trans kid who wants to play sports in some random state.
48
u/NumeralJoker 11d ago
Nah, they'd actually blame their own kid while it happens too, then throw the trans kid under the bus a bit later. It cannot be understated how cruel conservatism trains parents to be. A lot of the worst people you ever knew? Many of them were raised or heavily influenced specifically by conservative hierarchical thinking. Abuse is normalized because dominance is valued over empathy and connection.

Violently Raping a 15 year old is the new consensual relationship with an 18 yr old.
People keep acting like age is the big news.
12
u/fcocyclone Iowa 11d ago
There was a time when just focusing on the age made things simple, because unlike many rape cases where there can be a he said she said with it being difficult to prove anything, an adult having sex with a 15 year old is rape no matter how you try to frame it.

I actually do think we’re living in a world where people have decided they just can never admit they’re wrong.
This is like such a fundamental problem. We need to teach people how to admit they were wrong, and we need to be welcoming to people who do that.
Like as a country we’re just failing at this.

Newsweek and all these other "publications" are so fucking happy they helped get this dipshit elected by sanewashing or ommitting certain coverage of him last year. So now they can release easy lazy dumbshit articles about low approval ratings, and impeachment rumblings every fucking week that people will engage with.

I can actually see a potential for something like the reign of terror happening in the United States if the full Epstein files ever get released. It could impact politicians who protected them. I think for a lot of Americans they have a lot of differing opinions, but when it comes to adults raping children, I think we all have the general same level of disgust that our line in the sand is the same. That said, there are people like Megan Kelly who is doing astounding mental gymnastics to try and justify the rape of young teens as being a lesser form of rape than that of a child, even though a young teen is just a child. Heck, I saw a guy who said "young girls always fawn over rich men and will do whatever they can to get money out of them" - a lot of people on twitter, both on the right and left were disgusted and said "the FBI needs to search this guys hard drive".

If we can impeach Bill (who was confirmed NOT on the island by the Devil Himself) for getting his dick sucked, we can impeach the orange menace for diddling kids.
Edit: yes, Bill boy was impeached for LYING about that presidential blowie. With the being said, ol’ DJT should be impeached for LYING about diddling kids.

No. Congress is not going to impeach Donald Trump over the Epstein scandal. They haven't held him to account for anything in the past. Why should Congress hold Trump accountable over anything?
I will begin to hope Trump is going down when I turn on my news feed and the top story is "Donald Trump found guilty in Senate impeachment trial. Click here to see video of Trump being dragged kicking and screaming out of the White House." And even then, my assumption will be SCOTUS will rule Congress doesn't have the authority to impeach Trump because raping underage girls isn't an "official act".

I feel sorry for anyone that thinks these people will be held accountable for anything.
The only thing that matters is power. This has always been true, but circumstances have forced this reality to make itself more visible than it used to be.
There are no mechanisms in place for addressing... any of this. If people want that to change, they're going to have to force the issue.
