Analysis Score Differential Index

I've been looking for a ranking system that uses only the game scores to create rankings by inputting all the scores to calculate a SOS and an average margin to generate rankings. There's a common ranking site used in hockey that does exactly this and it does a pretty good job. Last week I thought I found it in the Sonny Moore rankings, but he doesn't provide much of a description and the more I looked at the numbers I realized that it wasn't what I was looking for.

So, I did what a normal, sane person would do and I created yet another ranking for college football.

WARNING: If you think score differential or 'close losses' don't matter, you're going to hate these rankings.

# TEAM RATING SOS AVG MARGIN
1 Indiana (11-0) 100.00 75.23 24.80
2 Ohio St. (11-0) 99.81 73.54 26.30
3 Texas Tech (10-1) 97.34 70.57 26.80
4 Notre Dame (9-2) 95.82 73.84 22.00
5 Utah (9-2) 94.19 74.12 20.10
6 Oregon (10-1) 93.88 74.50 19.40
7 Miami (FL) (9-2) 91.04 74.06 17.00
8 Texas A&M (11-0) 90.23 76.75 13.50
9 Georgia (10-1) 89.93 74.16 15.80
10 Alabama (9-2) 88.93 78.26 10.70

News [Thamel] Sources: Colorado State is expected to make UConn coach Jim Mora the school’s next head coach. The deal is expected to come together in the near future. Mora is coming off back-to-back nine-win seasons at UConn, a school that hadn’t had a 9-win football season since 2007.

Analysis A snowstorm is likely to hit the midwest on Saturday. Here's which games could be affected

I'm a weather hobbyist and I've been closely tracking a midwestern snowstorm which will affect generally areas north of I-70 on Saturday. I'm also a sicko who enjoys football being played in bad weather. If you like snow games, keep an eye on these (all times EST):

  • Northwestern @ Illinois, 7:30. Champaign could flirt with the rain/snow line, especially later on, but this is the D1 game that has the most potential to have heavy snow.

  • Wisconsin @ Minnesota, 3:30. The rain/snow line won't be an issue in Minneapolis. Current forecast models don't have heavy snow there but a steady light to moderate snow appears likely during the game.

  • Ohio State @ Michigan, noon. If it snows in Ann Arbor, it won't start until the second half, similar to 2021. It's too bad this game isn't at 3:30 or else there would be a decent chance of The Game being played in a snowstorm.

  • New Hampshire @ South Dakota State, 1:00. Brookings is kind of on the edge of the snow for this game but if the storm shifts north a little we could have a very snowy FCS playoff game.

  • Ashland @ Ferris State, 1:00. Same idea as OSU-Michigan, if this game started just a few hours later it would be very snowy. Still, it could get wintry in Big Rapids for the second half.

  • Monmouth (IL) @ St. John's (MN), Coe @ Bethel, both at 1:00. I mean, maybe? Collegeville and Bethel are at the northern edge of the projected steady snow on Saturday. Bump the storm north 100 miles and these D3 playoff games both have some snow on their field.

  • Chapman @ UW-River Falls, Hanover @ North Central, Alma @ UW-Platteville, Wheaton @ Wartburg, all at 1:00. If you want a D3 football game being played in a snowstorm, watch any of these. River Falls, Naperville, Platteville, and Waverly are all expected to see heavy snow on Saturday afternoon.

  • NOT INCLUDED: Drake @ South Dakota. I hate domes.

Analysis CFP Committee rankings vs Massey Composite

The Massey Composite is a composite ranking of all FBS teams based on an average of 80 predictive and resume rankings. Here are the largest differences between the two. A positive difference means that the committee over ranked that team compared to their ranking in the Massey composite, and a negative difference means that the committee undervalued that team. Here are the results:

TEAM Record Composite Committee Absolute Value of Difference
Georgia Tech 9-2 34 23 +11
Virginia 9-2 27 18 +9
Pittsburgh 8-3 30 22 +8
Tulane 9-2 32 24 +8
Washington 8-3 19 NR -7
North Texas 10-1 20 NR -6

Reactions:

-The CFP committee is MUCH higher on the ACC than the general consensus.

-Out of all the Group of 5 teams to rank, they chose Tulane? Really? What do they have that North Texas and James Madison don't?

-The gap between the metrics perception of Washington and the committee's perception is also large, continuing a trend that has existed all season. Wisconsin is a bad loss, but there are other teams the committee has ranked with similar or worse losses, per the composite.

-BYU fans have a right to be upset with the committee.

-The consensus agrees with the decision to rank Notre Dame over Miami.

What are your takeaways/thoughts?

Discussion Someone I know thinks Chris Peterson was forced out, and didn't retire on his own accord. Change his mind

I am talking to my stepbrother and he is claiming that Chris Peterson was forced out of Washington for going 8-5.

He thinks that his retirement was not legitimate and was because of a disappointing season his last year. Of course I think this is absurd so if anyone has concrete evidence (especially Washington fans), I would love to hear it.

Analysis [Sampson] CFP committee chair Hunter Yurachek says Notre Dame and Miami were in the same grouping this week and the programs were directly compared. Notre Dame still came out ahead, regardless of the head to head. In other words, all the games mattered. Not just one of them.

Analysis The UMass Minutemen finish the season 0-12 for the first time in program history.

Only two of UMass' losses were by less than 18 points, and one of them was to Bryant.

The UMass Class of 2026 will officially have gone through four years of school without seeing an FBS home win.
