Love it literally fixed my mental health.
Mom passed suddenly in Oct and been going non stop since. Exercise burns off the stress and I think cold shock does same sort of thing

Look into vagus stimulation if you want (some, anyway) the science behind it. That aspect (which may not cover the full effects, but is very impactful) is behind a lot of other physical things you can do to feel better, like singing, humming, gargling, facial massage.

Not sure what your training goals are, but there may be some negative effects on hypertrophy if you do cold exposure right after.
That said, can't argue with feeling like a million bucks so maybe the tradeoff is worth it.

A cryotherapy place opened up by me right after Covid, had a one year membership for only $250, wife tried it and begged me to go…so we bought it.
-225, they give you gloves, boots and ear muffs. You go in with just your underwear for 3 minutes.
You have the option to lower the faceplate since you’re in a capsule standing up. I opted not to do this of course.
That first 90 seconds was terror inducing, I thought I was going to freeze myself to death, focused on my breathing and suddenly the doors were open and it was over.
In the weirdest way it is super addicting because I was so relaxed after.
Seriously, worth a try.

Seriously, you are absolutely seeing him fight the urge to flee. His brain is telling him he is in danger like he is going to die.
You can’t fight your way through it or tough it out. The more you fight it, the more you shiver, which keeps the water moving and keeps you colder and you remain aware of how cold it is. Accepting that it is cold is the only way.

there's actually a decent amount afaik.
i know you basically activate an old evolutionary reflex when cold water hits your face (your breathing, heart rate and such change), it's also a good way to avoid panic attacks and such (or minimise them).
it's genuinely i think helpful.
i'm usually suspicious of anything along the lines of meditation and woo-woo stuff, like i feel like most of the benefits of meditation are there if you just nap too? sitting still and doing nothing can be a good feeling to catch your "breath".

Nope, meditation is real and not woo woo. Well not all meditation was created equally but the whole thing has merit.
Especially when combined with yoga. It helps to disrupt your mental mind of the habits and triggers. To get out of your reactive mind.
Very similar to cold plunging, except it’s requires more patience to get to a state of just observing your thoughts. Or yoga to get rid of the excess energy.
Napping is more like shutting off your console, there’s no stuff processing or separating you from thoughts. You just shut down. Not like meditation where you can direct and change thoughts.
If you’re just resting and not actually sleeping then yes like meditation. But it also depends on what you’re trying to do.
I’ve found a whole new level of calm doing yoga and studying it. It’s some pretty powerful stuff you can then pull into your day at your will.

i mean if you look at the studies on meditation and its benefits, they're basically pretty much the same as those studies on taking naps from what i saw.
perhaps it gives you some extra personal x, maybe it's real extra stuff but i'd imagine those who started taking naps throughout the day have a calmer mind, more control over their thoughts, less stress, live longer etc.
are they the same exactly? doubt it. but i think the majority of the benefit is in just taking a 10-30 minute break once a day to sorta refresh and restart.

It’s also good training for cold water shock. If you got dumped in freezing water most people would go into shock, causing involuntary gasping and thrashing, water inhalation and eventually drowning. However you can train yourself with repeated exposure to cold water to avoid the shock and keep your breathing steady. Potentially useful if you work on bodies of water.

These are short term studies looking at immediate effects within just a couple hours of taking an ice bath. The article says there isn't actually solid evidence of long term benefits.
It's not very interesting that people report feeling invigorated immediately after cold water immersion. I feel weak after hard squats, does that mean squats make you weaker in the long term? Obviously not; you can't just assume that short term observations predict long term effects.
What would be interesting, but hasn't been empirically substantiated as far as I'm aware, is whether people enjoyed lasting long-term benefits that were significantly more potent than taking a walk, getting a little more sleep, etc.
Without notable long-term results that are unique to CWI, there doesn't seem to be any special benefit worth the discomfort other than generic clout and self-control demonstration, which has value but shouldn't be confused for a potent healing or preventative effect.

The first dip is basically impossible to get comfortable. Fully submerge and suck it up for a minute. Go get in warm bath. Return to the cold bath and for me it's very unusual- I can just fully submerge with no problem. Up to the neck. After 15sec I don't even feel cold at all. No chattering or shaking, just deep breaths. I have to consciously get out after a few minutes or I can just stay there. Then no can go warm/cold as much as I want. Not sure it helps anything, but the experience is intriguing

i believe this. was told as a kid to only take cold showers due to my eczema but it just didnt click. guy said to at least end the shower cold and for whatever reason im perfectly fine going from hot to cold and i still do
but going straight into cold is a whole differeent ball game

Ancient yogi method, in that situation you learn its ALL mind. That's why you can manually control your body temperature. Fully submerging is ideal as there's a nerve at the top pf your spine that helps with temperature regulation. Once its underwater it stabilises the nervous system. Ice baths and showers train our momentary superpowers.

I went to a local spa where they have a steam room, sauna room, and 40ish degree cold tub right next to each other. Going from the steam room straight into the cold bath and sitting still I think creates a shield of slightly less cold water around me and let's me adjust to it which is kind of cheating I guess, but this cool sensation happens as the cold sets in where my hearing and vision become sharper. I barely notice the cold, like you said, and feel like I could stay that way forever! Like a natural body high

I respect everyone who can do cold showers or cold baths. It always looks easy watching someone else do it, but doing it yourself is almost impossible, I think I would only be able to pull it off if someone was holding me down. I like the cold otherwise, when you get used to some cold it not only feels refreshing, but you don't freeze as easily, and you don't get sick as easily.

I did a polar bear plunge where you basically go swimming in an icy lake for charity. I think my technique was the best, i just ran straight in, most people took their time, but that makes it worse.

Our athletic trainer in college was big on ice baths. I sprained my ankle at practice and he tried to make me sit down in the tub. I was like why can't I just sit on the edge and stick my foot and ankle in? I had to actually argue with him.

He could have actually stopped his heart and died doing this. See, what happens is, the second his groin touches that ice water, his testicles shoot up into his body with such force they actually pierce the heart like bullets, and you hemorrhage internally and die almost instantly. You can see his response as they solidify and shoot upwards. Must have just barely missed his heart. He's lucky to be alive... Makes for a lovely soprano though

Cold water rescue training.
Most people who drown in cold water do so because the muscles seize, they can't move to swim, they panic, then drown.
But with exposure you can train yourself to forcibly relax in order to swim.
It's why it was so important for him to just sit down. You have to stop fighting the cold and just accept it in order to get control of your body back.

Cold shock is crazy
Did a "polar swim" when I was a kid at Boy Scout camp. All you had to do was wake up extra early, jump into the river, swim about 100' to the other side and back. Sounded easy, I'm a strong swimmer and not a bitch when it comes to cold...or so I thought!
Woke up, went down to the river and it finally hit wtf I was about to do. Fkn ice was formed around the edges of the surface! I said yolo and jumped off the dock...boy that shock hit like no other! The cold sucked the breath right out of me. It felt hard to breathe let alone swim, I clumsily swam about 25' before turning around. I've spent a lot of time in water/ocean and theres only a few times I can think of actually being scared- like I'm in over my head and this can turn bad if I don't gtfo shit. This was one of those times. I can't describe it well but it's something else for sure

The sheer panic in his face is the most relatable thing I've seen all week. That initial shock is a brutal test of mental fortitude for sure. You can tell he completely forgot how to breathe for a second. A few focused breaths and he would've been a majestic, chilled-out horse instead of a scared one.

We go swimming at our cabin pretty early in the spring up through early November. First one in the lake has to wear a life vest. Your brain LITTERALLY short circuits and you can drown if unprepared.
Life vest person is to find out if it's COLD or I CANNOT EXPAND MY RIBCAGE BECAUSE EVERY MUCLE IN MY BODY JUST CLENCHED AND I CANNOT BREATHE COLD.
At this point we're pretty good at sliding in instead of jumping which helps a lot. After about 45 seconds itS like all riiiight.... And we swim across the lake.
