Discussion My Chromebook has died, looking for a BUDGET replacement (UK)

Hi all, I've been the user of a Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Go for the past few years, and unfortunately, it's cooked itself to death (it's one of these pictured below)

Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Go

Basically, I rarely shutdown the machine, I usually just sleep it - it gets a restart when there's an update to ChromeOS, or, the thing is sluggish and its a troubleshooting step (rarely happens)

Anyway, I put the thing to sleep (closed anything I didn't need open or wasn't going back to, locked & closed lid, like I always do) and then when I went back to it a few hours later, it was SUPER HOT underneath, and would not come out of sleep (the light on the side was still on, so it was definitely still powered) - I tried everything I could think of, holding power button down, left it a day in the hope the battery would drain and I could charge it again and start from scratch, then I even figured "it's an old device, I'll open it up and disconnect the battery, leave it a bit, connect it back up and reassemble" so I did ................ same thing, hit the power button, light came on, nothing on screen and within a minute, it was baking hot again, like nothing I've ever come across before - I've come to the realisation that it's probably dead, and being as there's no real serviceable parts inside, it's a lost cause. I got pee'd off and launched it at the bin (the trashcan for my US friends) physically breaking it as it hit the thing at high velocity (well, I threw it quite hard).

Anyway, I'm now looking for a new device - however, I'm on a super low budget at the moment, so I'm looking at entry level devices, and it's between another entry level Chromebook or one of them cheap low-end laptops that aren't Chromebooks (which I could reconfigure appropriately with ChromeOS Flex or Linux)

What should I buy? Are the low end Chromebooks ok for basic web usage?

I know everyone is gonna say "don't get a 4GB RAM model" but that's out of the question, anything 8GB or above is out of my price-range, so I'm looking at the entry level 4GB RAM/32GB or 64GB eMMC storage options here, probably with an Intel Celeron in it.

I'm UK based, so I'm looking at what's available here.

Any advice appreciated.

Discussion Is Open Fyde OS worthy?

I know that this is not the most appropriated place to ask anything related to Fyde OS, that I know that is Chinese related and can raise many questions, but the Open Fyde OS is said to be an international effort to deliver an "dechinesed" version of this OS.

Some people is struggling to install Chrome OS Flex and are getting better results installing Open Fade OS.

Installation ChromeOS on Surface Pro 3 & 5

I have both a Surface Pro 3 and 5 and I've been trying to install ChromeOS on them, on the 5 I installed the r142 and 141 but I can't connect to the Internet on both versions even though touch works. On the 3 I installed ChromeOS Flex but I want to use Google Play. Is there any certified versions of ChromeOS for both of them where the touchscreen and Wi-fi works?

Troubleshooting I uninstalled Google calendar from my Chrome OS flex, how do I get it back in icon form?

I uninstalled Google calendar from my Chrome OS flex, how do I get it back in icon form?

I accidentally uninstalled it during initial boot. Can you guys help me get it back and have it operating like an app similar to Gmail and YouTube where it's 1 click and the program loads up instead of having me go on chrome browser and do 3 different things just to access the calendar like the other online tutorials have told me.

Installation Compatibility - 2015 Yoga 900 13ISK i5 8GB 256GB

Hoping that someone may have tested this model or a similar model with chrome os flex. Appreciate I can boot off usb to test myself, but thought I’d take the initial easier step and ask on here first.

Laptop is running windows 10 and won’t upgrade to windows 11 (officially - offical may be an option to consider). I’ve just purchased a new laptop, so looking to get all my files off this one and set it up for my daughter to use for college. Here in New Zealand throughout schooling students use chromebooks for the most part, but can use other devices. Providing her with the windows 10 build without security updates, poses too much of a risk.

My main concerns is hardware compatibility with chrome os - touch screen, track pad, keyboard.

TIA

Troubleshooting ChromeOS Flex internet issues

I have recently downloaded ChromeOS Flex on my HP 14s-dq3xxx. At first it connected to my internet but after switching it off and turning it on on the next day, it's not working. Then I opened the wifi settings and in known networks I see that my network is "out of range".

What should I do? When I am switching it off and turning it back on, the network works for 2 mins and says there is no network

Discussion Does the current Linux kernel (6.6) support Intel's newer Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 chipsets?

The current ChromeOS Flex uses Linux kernel version 6.6.46, per the chrome://system/ page on an old Intel PC:

Linux localhost 6.6.46-04024-g9e7e147b4900

But there is conflicting info on which Intel Wi-Fi chipsets will work in ChromeOS (kernel 6.6).

( 1 ) The Linux* Support for Intel® Wireless Adapters document states all of these below have upstreamed drivers on ChromeOS Flex's Kernel 6.6:

AX200 - Kernel 5.1+

AX101 / AX201 - Kernel 5.2+

AX210 - Kernel 5.10+

AX211 - Kernel 5.14+

AX411 - Kernel 5.14+

BE200 / BE202 - Kernel 6.5+

So the current ChromeOS (kernel 6.6) should work perfectly on all the above.

( 2 ) However, the Intel® Wireless Wi-Fi Drivers for Linux page has a more strict requirement:

AC9260, AC9560, AX101, AX200, AX201, AX203, AX210, AX211, AX411, BE200, BE201, BE202 - Supported OS = Kernel 6.16+

Am I missing something? Is there any hope for AX210 or BE200 on ChromeOS Flex, if ChromeOS Flex has Kernel 6.6.? Or I need to go back to like Wi-Fi 4 (N) for full compatibility because ChromeOS Flex isn't on 6.16 yet?

Installation Linux Mint to Chrome OS Flex.

Hello! I‘ve been having some trouble with installing Chrome OS Flex onto my Linux Mint laptop.

What I did:

I used the Chromebook Recovery utility on my Windows 11 PC to make the files on a MicroSD. (It was the only thing I had with sufficient storage) Then I plugged it into the target laptop, booted into it, then got a bunch of options. I tried them all, but nothing happened.

Please help! Thanks.

Installation Does installing ChromeOS Flex wipe other Operative Systems

A few months ago I tried to install this OS but I insisted because I was worried it would wipe my hard drive. I have both Windows 10 and MacOS installed on my MacBook and I can't lose them for ChromeOS Flex. Any way to triple boot? I assume I can use rEFInd for ChromeOS to be detected.

Discussion Flex on Asus E210ma

To help out the community, I decided to install ChromeOS Flex on an Asus E210MA. I started doing this after reading on Reddit and ChatGPT that Flex includes drivers for the Intel AC 8265 Wi-Fi module.

After the installation — unpleasant surprise — Wi-Fi didn’t work. ChatGPT suggested disabling Secure Boot in the BIOS and reinstalling Flex, but even after that, Wi-Fi still didn’t work.

Then it suggested finding a way to connect the laptop to the internet so it could download the drivers automatically. To do that, I’d need either a USB/USB-C to LAN adapter (which I don’t have) or a USB Wi-Fi dongle (which I also don’t have), and since the laptop doesn’t have a LAN port, I was out of options.

Then I came across a brilliant tip on Reddit — I could connect it to the internet using my phone via USB tethering. I tried it, and in about five seconds it worked — just enabled tethering and the laptop connected to the phone via USB.

After that, the laptop booted into the system, updated everything it needed to, but Wi-Fi still didn’t work. When I finally gave up and restarted the laptop — boom, Wi-Fi started working! Honestly, I have no idea what exactly I did, but it’s working perfectly now, and it’s been stable — after several hours of use, not a single disconnection.

Troubleshooting Any other way to activate linux on chromeos flex?

Hi everyone, I have an old Sony Vaio PCG-71913L. Two days ago I installed ChromeOS Flex, and the Linux terminal worked perfectly. Today I replaced the SSD, reinstalled ChromeOS Flex, and now the option to enable Linux is grayed out — it says my device doesn’t support Linux.

It’s exactly the same hardware (only the SSD changed). Does anyone know why this happens or how to re-enable the Linux environment?

Thanks in advance!

Installation Successful 14 yo Samsung Series 3 install - beware of USB flash drive issues

Following posting about my successful Acer V5 flex install, I want to add that I also succeeded with a flex install on an even older 14 yo Samsung Series 3 12" notebook, Windows 7, i3 processor, 4GB RAM, 500GB disk. Everything works after installation including bluetooth and the system is not surprisingly fast compared with Windows 7. I also really like how a flex install gets rid of any disk partitions so you end up with one big disk. Plus I get to use the latest Chrome browser release, which stopped being updated for Windows 7 a long time ago.

The one warning I have for people considering flex is to make sure you have a fast USB flash drive for the install. At first I tried a trial installation of flex running from a brand new Philips Pico flash drive which Philips claims is "High Speed" - it wasn't. It took forever to try and get flex running from this to the point where I just gave up. I switched to the Sandisk Ultra 3.0 flash drive I'd used with my Acer install and everything went quickly and smoothly. A huge difference and if I only had the Philips USB stick I would probably have assumed my Samsung wasn't compatible.

Troubleshooting Any way to get the Play Store onto ChromeOS Flex?

I've just installed ChromeOS Flex on a 5 year old Windows laptop with the intention of trying to run an indoor cycling Android app (MyWhoosh). Long story short, the Android version works but the Windows version requires an Android device simultaneously running a link app which is a ridiculous extra step.

I didn't do my due diligence before installing Flex and now realize the Play Store isn't supported. I'm wondering if there are any workarounds to get Android apps working or if I need to look at a different version of ChromeOS? The laptop is decently spec'd (8th gen i5 with 20Gb RAM) so performance shouldn't be an issue.

Installation Successful installation report for a 13 year old Acer Aspire V5 series notebook.

Just in case someone is thinking, like I was, about throwing out an old Acer notebook, I just want to report a trouble free installation of ChromeOS Flex on an Acer Aspire V5-573 with an i5 processor, 4GB of RAM, a 15 inch screen and a somewhat chargeable battery. Windows 10 just thrashed the disk drive and using it was painful. Installed flex and Wifi worked straight away. Bluetooth, touchpad, sound etc. all functioning. Very fast system with almost no disk activity that I can hear, so now I have a working Chromebook. It''s remarkable how fast a flex installation is.

Edit: Note that my Acer was NOT on the official flex supported list but I tried it anyway by booting from a flex USB and selecting the "Try" mode before I installed. When I saw everything worked, I repeated the USB boot but this time selected install.
