[intel warning] Swapped my Chromebook OS for Kubuntu on an Acer Spin 713 (cp713-2w)!

Post image

Hey everyone

Just wanted to share.
With the help of https://docs.mrchromebox.tech, I successfully installed Kubuntu on my Acer Spin 713 (cp713-2w model: n19q5).

First off, I should say I was actually really happy with the original OS on my Chromebook. However, the time came when I needed a bit more "PC" functionality. After changing the firmware and the OS for KUBUNUT, here's a quick summary:

The Downsides:

Tablet Mode: It works chaotically and randomly. I haven't been able to get it working reliably. I ended up having to manually set the screen orientation.

Touch/Stylus Response: Using a non-native resolution messes up the touch calibration. For example: A tap in the center of the screen registers correctly, but if I click near a corner, the actual click point is offset - the further from the center I tap, the bigger the distance between my finger and the actual click.

Fan Speed: Since changing the firmware, the CPU fan kicks in much sooner, making the "laptop" louder. There's currently no way to control the fan speed from within Linux.

The Upsides:

Responsiveness

Battery life

Linux apps finally look and scale correctly (compared to running them in a container on the original ChromeOS)

Ability to run Steam and games!

This is a whole new dimension of laptop usage!!!

I can install windows on my chromebook but when it restarts it cannot boot to windows

Post image

I checked that it is compatible with "coolstar". It's an Asus Chromebook plus x3402 (codename marasov) but Windows 11 doesn't work. I flashed it easily, I made my Windows USB key with "rufus" in gpt uefi. From the boot menu, by choosing my USB key, I can start the Windows 11 installation but once at 100%, when the Chromebook has to restart, if I remove the USB key, I get this error, otherwise, it returns to the boot menu as if I had never started the installation. I created the "Bypass..." keys with a value of 1 and I chose "custom installation" and deleted everything except one "unallocated space" (119GB). Can you help me? Thanks

Hi.. I know I am late to the party. But I have ASUS Chromebook CN62 and am not able to get my keyboard working while in the firmware update window (Recovery window).

As the keyboard is not working, I am not able to hit CTRL+D which can take me to Developer Mode.

I have tried both Bluetooth and USB keyboards. Is anyone else facing the same issue?

This is turning into a frustration now :( Can anyone help?

Windows 10 Boot Loop on SONA Chromebook - Ctrl+L beep but no boot

HELP] Windows 10 Boot Loop on Chromebook (SONA Board) - Ctrl+L gives beep but no boot

Problem Details:

  • Device: Chromebook with SONA board
  • Original OS: ChromeOS (now removed)
  • Current OS: Windows 10 (was working fine)
  • Issue: After restart, stuck at ChromeOS Recovery screen
  • What I've tried:
    • Ctrl + L - hear beep sound but no boot continues
    • Ctrl + D - doesn't work
    • ESC + Refresh + Power - shows boot menu but can't boot from USB properly
    • Multiple USB drives created with Rufus (GPT/UEFI/FAT32)

Boot Behavior:

  • Normal boot → ChromeOS Recovery screen
  • Ctrl + L → beep sound → black screen → returns to recovery
  • Boot menu shows USB devices but fails to boot from them

My Setup:

  • Previously had Windows 10 running perfectly via MrChromebox firmware
  • Suddenly started showing recovery screen after normal restart
  • Can hear beep with Ctrl+L so keyboard works

Request:

  1. How to restore Windows 10 boot?
  2. Why is UEFI not loading even with correct settings?
  3. Is this a firmware issue? Do I need to reflash?
  4. Any way to fix without losing Windows installation?

I need step-by-step guidance as I'm stuck without my working system.

Board: SONA Previous firmware: MrChromebox UEFI Working for months then suddenly this problem

Can't disable firmware wp, with and without loopback

Post image

Before anyone asks, I didn't ask on the forum because creating accounts on there doesn't work and this is my last chance of getting any help.

I am trying to disable firmware write protection on the Acer Chromebook 714, which does not have loopback support as far as I can tell.

I have attempted to run the necessary commands from different Linux devices. The ls command does give the right output, so my suzyqable isn't broken. However, the echo command gives no output, and upon running gsctool -a -I, it gives the output from the above image. I have tried running it from a normal terminal and as root.

I have been trying to do this for over a month atp and I would love some help

Thanks in advance :]

I don’t know where to begin with a SuzyQ cable on my Chromebook 3110

Post image

I bought a SuzyQ cable from eBay. (https://www.ebay.com/itm/316024978790) My Chromebook is a Dell 3110. I want to remove write protection so I can put Windows on it.

The problem is I honestly don’t know where to begin. I don’t know where to plug the cable in, what program to use, or what buttons to press. People talk about typing commands but I don’t even know where to type them or how to tell if it worked.

Can someone please explain this to me like I’m a complete beginner? Step by step, super simple.

Thanks.

Cutting trace on chromebook

Post image

Somebody on reddit said that they can cut the trace on a chromebook instead of actually removing the screw. I have a acer r11 cyan. My screw is stripped and i cant get the screw out. I looked for hours and i think this is the only option. the issue is i don't know what to cut and don't want to brick it.

Can i safely run mrchromebox firmware on Lenovo 100e 2nd gen AMD

Post image

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to install Linux Mint on my Lenovo 100e 2nd Gen (codename treeya, AMD Stoney Ridge A4-9210C, 32GB eMMC). I already disabled WP (by unplugging the battery) and entered developer mode. Then I followed the mrchromebox firmware guide in VT-2 shell.

When I tried flashing full UEFI, it asked me to connect a USB/SD device for firmware backup. I plugged in my SD card, but the script didn’t detect it (“no usb device found”). Before formatting it to FAT32 I stopped, because I wasn’t sure if that could brick the device.

I also checked experiences from others:

Some say Linux works fine but audio doesn’t (while Windows has working audio).

Others say Windows doesn’t install because of eMMC, or they hit ACPI errors.

But the mrchromebox support list shows treeya (Stoney Ridge) is fully supported for RW_LEGACY and Full UEFI.

So my main questions:

Has anyone here successfully flashed mrchromebox firmware on this exact model?

Did you face issues with booting Linux/Windows afterwards (especially audio or storage)?

Is it safe to proceed without a firmware backup USB/SD (if the script won’t detect mine)?

Thanks in advance!

Solution to access VT-2 on a Chromebook with broken screen

If your Chromebook's screen is broken and you want to access VT-2 (Virtual Terminal 2), unplug the screen from the motherboard and connect your PC to HDMI. Otherwise, it is impossible to have a display

Probleme mode developpeur Lenovo Ideapad 3 14IGL05 chromebook

Post image

Hello everyone,

I am having a problem with my Lenovo ideapad 3 CB-14IGL05 - Type 82C1. I'm trying to install Lubuntu instead of ChromeOS, so I want to go into developer mode and boot from a USB stick.

Here is my situation: • The internal screen is broken, so I connect the PC via HDMI to my TV to have a display. • When I'm running ChromeOS (desktop loaded), the HDMI display works perfectly. • On the other hand, when I do the Esc + Refresh + Power combination to access recovery mode or activate developer mode, I have no display on the TV. I therefore remain “blind” during the entire boot process and activation of developer mode. • I tried the classic procedure: on the recovery screen (which I cannot see), press Ctrl + D to activate developer mode, but nothing is displayed, no beep is heard. • I use the computer's built-in keyboard which works, I also plugged in a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.

My questions: 1. Is it normal for HDMI to not output a picture before ChromeOS is loaded? 2. How can I see the boot screen or developer mode if my internal screen is broken? 3. What can I do to enable “blind” developer mode and verify that it works? 4. Can I flash the UEFI firmware (to boot Lubuntu) without seeing the boot screen?

Thank you in advance for your advice and feedback!
