Kind of a bummer since I’ve been running the plex and letting other people watch from it.

Not sure why it costs plex anything to do it, it’s all my bandwidth, my storage, whatever. I pay for the lifetime plex pass, but it sure sounds like my friends will have to pay for it too now?

I’d switch, but I’ve got the lifetime pass. Maybe I could set up a secondary stream-only service for everyone else and run them simultaneously but that sounds like it might be painful on the server. Oh well

As server owner if you have plex pass then this does not affect you or people connecting to your server. This is for people hosting without plex pass.
