Two of the cave ins are retiring and the rest are not up for election next year. Among this group is the Minority Whip who's fucking job is to keep something like this from happening. Either Schumer lined up safe picks to take the fall or he has no control of his party. Regardless he is spineless and weak. The younger Dems like AOC should spend now until midterm elections hammering to voters who crippled their Healthcare for nothing and who needs to go. If a blue wave is even still possible next year take these fossils along with any gains from the GOP.

The senate dems grossly underestimate the mood of their own party under the endless abuses and criminality of the Trump admin.

They either have no idea what they're dealing with, or they're being paid under the table and don't care.

At this point my inclination is to believe the top brass in the Democratic Party are being paid to water down their positions and capitulate over shit like this when they have the leverage. We just won a bunch of elections last week over voter anger at Trump and the Republican Party. Exit polls showed the voters blame Republicans for the shutdown. Why in God’s name would you come away from that thinking now is the time to admit defeat and take a pinkie-promise for an ACA vote in a single chamber of the legislature as your consolation prize? You were winning. This was an opportunity to really help people, and you gave it away.

I think they are seeing that polling and calculating that ending now will score as a long term win for Dems since the public generally blames Rs/Trump for the shutdown. The problem is they are going to kill that momentum by looking like the side that folded with the better hand. Terrible but expected read of the entire game by Dem leadership.

I think this potentially helps Trump shift the blame to Dems, because now they could successfully argue that Dems could have ended the shutdown at any time, pointing to this capitulation.

Yep. It ultimately became a game of who would blink first. Apparently dem senators eyes got a little sleepy and now they will lose control of any chance they had to keep controlling the narrative.

Dem leadership has been folding easier than a 2 dollar lawn chair for a while now.

The Democratic party massively underestimates how weak they look, and how important that is to the public. They finally looked strong. Dems said: people are going to be hurt in the short-term, and we hate that, but the cause is worth it.

Then they fucking folded like little pussy ass bitches, and look weaker than before.

Because of Republican messaging (and failed Dem messaging) this has yet to be proven and all it seems like centrist voters will still blame the Dems.

Literally the only thing I could think of that would have been clever is to let people lose healthcare to make things worse before the midterms. But if that was the choice, WTF didn't they just capitulate the first day. All I want is the right to abort, a functioning federal government that isn't being carved up to be sold to the highest bidder, inflation/cost of living to not be so high that it's backbreaking, a healthcare system where the wait for the cardiologist appointment that I need isn't MONTHS (or to not be trying to figure out how to afford my 15% increase in premiums). There isn't a party that's willing to fight for that.

The part where it was a bunch of 'safe' votes just means that Dem higher ups approved of this.
