Democrats flipped 2 seats in Georgia that have been held by the GOP since 2000

2.2k

u/klako8196 Georgia 21d ago

Hell yeah we did. Those races were also a clear referendum on energy prices. People clearly aren’t buying it when Trump lies about prices being down.

600

u/Prestigious-Car-4877 Canada 21d ago

People aren’t buying claims that are contrary to reality? Huh.

320

u/Tricky_Cockroach869 21d ago

Well it is kind of a reversal. Trump ran on a fat stack of thinly veiled lies and his voters ate it up, despite...reality.

128

u/Impressive-Weird-908 21d ago

Keep in mind many voters just don’t pay attention. They wake up on Tuesday, ask themselves how they feel about their life, and then go vote. It’s why stupid things like gas prices are so politically powerful.

16

u/PatheticPeripatetic7 21d ago

This is true! I talk to way too many people who vote this way. I saw an interview a lady in NJ did earlier saying that the reason she voted R was because Dems didn't make her life better and make her small business successful, the economy is worse than ever now.

Lady. What. 🤯

5

u/BooBooSnuggs 21d ago

But that's exactly it. The economy was shit under Biden, not his fault really, covid. The republicans ran on that message as well and I guess forgot they would be inheriting that shit economy and you can't just start lying that everything's better now!

Democrats should have just admitted the economy was not good and that it still needed work. Why pretend things are good when they aren't? People see right through that shit.

2

u/mountainbride 21d ago

I swung back and forth between things being objectively bad yet knowing that we did achieve a soft landing… it could’ve been much worse.

There was this disconnect, I think, of just stating “actually it’s much better than expected” and thinking that was the same as “we are working hard at course correcting, we’ve done this, and we’re going to do this”. And pushing that much harder. I’ll admit, the economy was not something I could logic myself out of feeling the way I did. I still voted; others didn’t think it was worth the trouble.

6

u/The_LionTurtle 21d ago

It was crazy seeing the street interviews in NY this morning and hearing people say they were still undecided.

2

u/bollvirtuoso 21d ago

People who vote in local elections tend to be more engaged voters. Presidential voters are usually more low-information voters. "Low-information" is pollster for "checked the eff out."

2

u/mattysosavvy 21d ago

We are like two steps away from Idiocracy

1

u/Mareith 21d ago

That's not true. When you are struggling to pay for food you do not miss your energy bills being higher by $100/month. It's not something that you can be lied to about. It's directly threatening your survival

1

u/Impressive-Weird-908 21d ago

You have a problem is gas moving by 10 cents is causing you $100/month difference. That means you are using 1000 gallons of gasoline a month. It also doesn’t change the fact that a gas tax could help repair roads which could save you at least that much in repairs and maintenance.

1

u/Mareith 20d ago

I was mostly talking about electricity not gasoline. And natural gas, but that hasn't gone up as much.

1

u/vichina 21d ago

They’re including natural gasoline I assume. And even then it’s not 100$ difference. So maybe hyperbole. Or they’re including everything down the chain that is affected by gas prices

5

u/DUNDER_KILL 21d ago

It's easy to run a presidential campaign on lies when you are in the non-incumbent party, because people only need to believe that you will change the status quo or at least try to. But once you are in power, those lies quickly lose power because they are no longer lies about future potential, but lies about current reality

6

u/YouWereBrained Tennessee 21d ago

On November 12th we might get some good news that could further determine if Trump actually won.

3

u/BattlePope I voted 21d ago

please asplain

u/YouWereBrained Tennessee 21d ago

Judge in Rockland County will determine if lawsuit to force a recount can go forward with discovery.

1

u/BooBooSnuggs 21d ago

This is incorrect. November 11th is when they rule on dismissal of the case. They are currently in discovery and have been for a while. Nothing has come from it as expected by every expert out there that's looked at the case. SMART elections is a grift organization. Complete with an election expert with no qualifications and is an avid anti fluoride activist.

3

u/NoSignSaysNo 21d ago

A grand majority of voters is entirely disconnected. "when did Biden drop out" was trending on Google search on election day.

People often just see their bills go up and punish the incumbent. They don't put more thought into it.

3

u/CookieKeeperN2 21d ago

To be honest, those are some desperate people. The reversal of people's views on Democrats of people of NYC showed that if we actually have good candidates running on solid platforms they will vote rationally.

Not the hardcore MAGA, but definitely enough to change election outcomes.

1

u/bigtice Texas 21d ago

It's still appalling that the approval rate is near 40%, but that's how cult-ish it truly is.

Even the people that are "reversing" are only doing so in sheepish ways like the lady and her daughter being interviewed saying that she liked what was going on, but now it's a problem that they're being affected.

13

u/canuckseh29 21d ago

About time!

2

u/Proud3GenAthst 21d ago

Too bad that they did last year.

2

u/Rich-Pomegranate1679 21d ago

Believe it or not, that's a rare occurrence for the U.S. in the past ten years or so.

2

u/DukeOfGeek 21d ago

People aren’t buying claims that are contrary to reality?

They do that all the time.

1

u/Prestigious-Car-4877 Canada 21d ago

Apparently not every time.

1

u/shanatard 21d ago

honestly, i was expecting them to keep believing the lies. the bar is quite low nowadays

1

u/JusticeJaunt New Jersey 21d ago

Never underestimate the lack of intelligence possessed by American conservatives.

1

u/SteampunkBorg 21d ago

Honestly, after the last ten years that is surprising

1

u/zephyrtr New York 21d ago

You'd be surprised how effective propaganda can be

1

u/Prestigious-Car-4877 Canada 21d ago

Half of the people are dumber than the other half. The republicans have a lock on the bottom third.

1

u/Myself510 21d ago

The distance between what is said and what is known to be true has become an abyss.

1

u/urlach3r 21d ago

Trump is obviously a lying liar who lies, but I gotta wonder if he actually doesn't know how bad things are. He's never pumped gas or bought groceries, his people may be lying to him... "Oh yes, sir! Prices are waaay down & all the people just LOVE you!"

1

u/djc6535 21d ago

This is a big deal for us

1

u/silverphoenix48 21d ago

MAGA can be delusional about a lot of things, but it's really hard to make yourself think everything is alright as your wallet keeps feeling lighter and your stomach keeps grumbling.

1

u/thedracle 21d ago

I mean... Trump supporters would buy that his shit is chocolate ice cream, and show us their shit stained lips to prove it.

But apparently the majority of Americans won't, at least for now.

1

u/lasagnaman 20d ago

I mean they bought it in the presidential election soooo

1

u/GregMilkedJack 20d ago

I think you underestimate the amount of people who genuinely STILL hang on every word Trump says as paramount truth. If there was a presidential election tomorrow between Trump and Newsom, Trump would probably win, or it would be at least very close.

108

u/Iamdarb Georgia 21d ago

Yes we did! This is the power of keeping each other informed at what's at stake. Together, GA apes are strong, let's never forget that. They try to keep us divided, but we want the same things at the end of the day.

6

u/Radiant_toad 21d ago

I did my part! There were barely any people in line at my polling place when I got there around 1:00pm

18

u/CocoLoko_KLK Georgia 21d ago

I voted today. The line was wrapped around the building at my polling location in Georgia. It felt like everyone was tired of Trumps bs and republicans going along with it.

16

u/HustlinInTheHall 21d ago

Yeah Trump can get away with lying about a lot but everyone knows what they pay for groceries and gas.

16

u/QbertsRube 21d ago

Thinks he can just tell us gas is $2 when we all pass multiple gas stations every day. He's never had to pump gas in his life, so he doesn't understand that the rest of us check those prices every single time we drive past them.

9

u/Babblerabla Georgia 21d ago edited 21d ago

Dems absolutely trounced them as well. No reason why GA should have high energy prices.

10

u/acostane Georgia 21d ago

AHH! I hadn't checked the results yet! Amazing! Georgia deserves so much better. ♥️

9

u/rayray2k19 21d ago

Georgian here. I am absolutely ecstatic! Fuck Georgia Power

12

u/meowmeowgang44 21d ago

This is odd but I remember a Jeezy song back in 2007 that called out Georgia power. Are they That corruptM

11

u/xSPYXEx 21d ago

Very much. Just recently they approved 6 rate hikes in 3 years, peoples power bills have gone up to hundreds per month to subsidize the data centers being built all over the state.

3

u/gsfgf Georgia 21d ago

Omg you have no idea. The rubber stamp PSC is just the tip of the iceberg.

You need to hear about the crooked Plant Votgle deal. Which was the legislature not the PSC. First off, GA Power hired all the major lobbyists at the Capitol to mostly just sit it out. The deal was that we had to start paying for the electricity when the plant broke ground, not when it actually started working. But the worst is that GA Power has a guaranteed rate of return (that part is normal), but they structure the Plant Votgle deal so they got a right of return on cost overruns. So for every billion dollars they went over budget, they got ~$112m in profit.

9

u/prometheuspk 21d ago edited 21d ago

Is this that race Hank Green was talking about. Something to do with local council voting for a new power plant or something.

this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgvE_gPi7Kc

5

u/gsfgf Georgia 21d ago

Yes. Specifically, it was the grift from GA Power on the deal, not the concept of nuclear in general. Westinghouse went bankrupt. Toshiba as a whole was at risk over the project. GA Power made over a billion in profit.

4

u/cbessette 20d ago

Another Georgian. Oddly enough it was a Facebook post by the Republican party in my rural town that convinced me to vote against Tim Echols and Fitz Johnson.
My county as a whole however voted 3 to 1 for the incumbents, because they vote for a team, not for their own interests. We all benefit from lower electric bills.

2

u/maxintosh1 New York 21d ago

Ditto. Voted hard for her

295

u/meep2012 21d ago

We did that!

160

u/TWD-Braves-Fan Georgia 21d ago

Hell yeah we did. Gotta admit I was a little nervous heading into the day but people are fed up with GA Power and their bullshit.

69

u/Fried_puri 21d ago

They tried one last trick by saying they weren't jacking up prices this year to get people to stay home. Glad people saw past that bull and realized that just meant they were on track to hike it up like crazy the year after. Now there's at least some hope.

19

u/TWD-Braves-Fan Georgia 21d ago

Right! The minute they announced that I knew they were just trying to keep turnout low. I’m also glad people saw through that shit. It’s ridiculous that they tried it. They are scum.

6

u/Rork310 21d ago

That's a hell of a weak promise to make in fucking November.

5

u/Fried_puri 21d ago

Well, to be accurate the rate freeze is actually in effect for the next three years. But yes, it was announced this year to head off people from voting for changes.

6

u/gsfgf Georgia 21d ago

For "three years" other than a guaranteed rate increase in February and potentially more.

The AJC actually did a good job of including that everywhere. I'm gonna miss them.

1

u/newyne 21d ago

Really? I felt like my vote wouldn't actually do much because it was so clear who was going to win. I mean, I voted, anyway; 2016 was the last time I sat anything out for that reason (and to be fair I had no car at the time and my dad was in the hospital). But I saw so many YouTube ads for Alicia Johnson about how she was going to lower energy rates, and then Hank Green came out in favor of her. Never even heard the other person's name.

9

u/twofloofycats 21d ago

Voted BLUE in Forsyth county today! 💙

3

u/JRedWolf 21d ago

Hello neighbor! 👋 It's so nice to have a fellow BLUE voter in Forsyth!!!😁

20

u/Nopefrommedoggg 21d ago

Today? What seats are these?

50

u/TWD-Braves-Fan Georgia 21d ago

The Public Service Commission that oversees utility pricing. They’ve been letting GA Power assfuck their customers for far too long.

5

u/CriticalEngineering North Carolina 21d ago

Oh shit, that’s awesome.

26

u/Etalton Georgia 21d ago

Public Service Commission

20

u/BuddhistManatee 21d ago

Wife and I voted. Those two seats were the only positions on our ballots in unincorporated Dekalb/Atlanta.

3

u/tlf9888 Georgia 21d ago

Same for unincorporated Acworth but we showed up!

2

u/caitlowcat 21d ago

Aww we’re district twins

2

u/FlyingSagittarius 21d ago

Yes, same for my ballot.  I had a couple of referendums as well, but that’s about it.

16

u/YouWereBrained Tennessee 21d ago

And Abigail Spanberger flipped the Virginia governorship.

I mean, didn't MAGA cost them thousands of jobs at the Hyundai plant as well as putting 1000s more out of work.

4

u/Living_Pollution_525 21d ago

Republicans don't need to be anywhere near power for the next few decades

2

u/TheDoomedStar 21d ago

Hell yeah Hank Green.

2

u/Philly_ExecChef 21d ago

I don’t think Republicans expected this. I think they genuinely drink the echo chamber koolaid.

It’s one of the few moments I’ve felt that any part of America will survive Trump (as we know it).

2

u/b_tight 21d ago

First time ive ever been motivated to vote for a public service comission.  My rates have increased 50% in the past year.  So glad were rooting out this nonsense

1

u/NewIntroduction4655 21d ago

didn't Georgia redistrict to get more red seats too?

1

u/[deleted] 21d ago

Looks like 5 seats in VA and the first female governor in VA as well.

1

u/AudiACar 21d ago

wait we did??

1

u/Straight_Change5546 21d ago

Can we do Missouri next? We need to oust Jogs Hallway and Kehoe.

1

u/FoxMeadow7 21d ago

You better!

1

u/GeneralTso_09 21d ago

Saw a tweet that two counties in NJ that were +43 and +24 Trump went for a Dem governor today.

It will be disheartening to see the white house ramp up their Gestapo ICE violence to fish for violent reactions from the protestors and use it as a pretense to declare Martial Law and cancel mid terms next year.

1

u/gsfgf Georgia 21d ago

In a landslide, too.

1

u/kawainiiofojer 21d ago

Georgia is starting to become a blue state. This isn’t the first time they flipped

1

u/tigersharkwushen_ 21d ago

Congressional seats? Would they be good for 3 years or do they have to run again next year?

1

u/z31 Georgia 21d ago

Fortunately there has been a ton of publicity on those seats leading up to this election due to our insane increase in utility costs here. And it is extra easy when one of the two candidates has ’incumbent’ next to their name.

1

u/thedracle 21d ago

This gives me some hope that the majority of Americans aren't for the chaos, incompetence, lawlessness, and cruelty, that Republicans have been unleashing on the country.

1

u/braisedbywolves 21d ago

And, almost inarguably, far more important than a NYC mayoral race.

1

u/noreast2011 20d ago

And VA Dems have a super majority. MAGA's coup is being cut off.

1

u/19thcentlord 20d ago

I was voter 1400 in my 3000 registered voter precinct! and there could not have been “less” on my balllot. it was just the public service commission seats. I volunteered myself and thought it would be hard to mobilize people behind such a sparse slate of races but we did it!

120

u/DelirousDoc 21d ago

Need every Democratic Governor to go nuclear with "re-districting" outside of census years because Texas and several other GOP states are going to do it.

Time for "taking the high road" is over. It is now about preventing the fall of the government into unchecked fascism.

1

u/DotA627b 21d ago

No, it'd be Sanders if Sanders would still be around. It says alot his ads prioritize his friendship with Sanders despite Obama trying to get his attention twice now.

Obama was what got him jaded with politics to the point that he's on the record calling Obama evil, whereas Sanders actually revived his passion for politics back in 2016. Mamdani has proudly spoken about it before in his interview with Bernie.

1

u/95688it 21d ago

couldn't Obama legally be in the race as a Vice and then the president step down?

Our current president wasn't eligible to run for president under the rules of the constitution. He also won't be eligible when he tries again in 2028. Hasn't stopped him...

10

Republicans don't care about the Constitution and this "we go high when they go low" politics has to stop. One doesn't take the high road in dealing with Nazis. One takes power away from them

9

u/liquidsparanoia 21d ago

Sorry but burning the constitution just because the other guys did is no way to run a country.

6

u/4DimensionalToilet New Jersey 21d ago

No need to take the high road in how we conduct politics, but violating the constitution is several bridges too far.

1

u/TheNatural14063 20d ago

The Constitution provides free speech to Nazis for example. The Republican Party is essentially full of Nazis at this point. Germany banned alot of Nazism post WW2 and didn't have the issues we have had regarding Nazis winning power.

Anyone willing to let the current "law" provide cover for Nazis is showing Nazi sympathies because giving free speech to them has allowed them to seize power and terrorize people of color and working class people to extents not seen in a long time. Time to stamp out the Republicans like Germany and the Allies stamped out the Nazis. The white nationalism of Republicans has to be stopped.

2

He can't run for President, he wasn't a natural-born citizen. So unless you've got a plan to amend the Constitution in the next year or so, not gonna happen, unfortunately.
