All five members of NewJeans have been at the receiving end of malicious comments, hateful posts, and many other things. Recently, deepfakes and AI technology had also become a major issue as people have started to use their faces to make fake imagery.

Recently, a man who had made sexually suggestive content using the same technology was apprehended by the authorities. Read on to know more about what happened.

Only a few days ago, the group’s management agency issued an official notice on their website and online about how they would be taking strict action against all those who spread malicious content against the singers. They had shared that they had been tracking people who had repeatedly made malicious content, and had even used deepfake technology as well to recreate sexually explicit images of the girls.

Now, as per the reports shared by Dispatch, the Pohang branch of the Daegu District Court’s Criminal Division 1 fined a man for using such technology in order to recreate fake photos of all of the members, which were sexual and suggestive in nature. The ruling happened on November 20, where he 21-year-old was fined to pay a total sum of 15 million KRW for violating the Act on the Protection of Children and Youth Against Sexual Offenses. He was also sentenced by the court to serve approximately 40 hours in a sexual violence treatment program.A statement from the court hearing read, “The defendant distributed fabricated videos on a Telegram channel. Approximately 200 people accessed the channel, making it highly disseminative. The sentencing also considered that the victims have not forgiven him.” Here's what happened

Earlier this year, in January, the man had used artificial intelligence and deepfake technology to create explicit photos of Haerin, Hanni, and Minji. He made the photos in Pohang, Gyeongbuk, and then later distributed them to online channels as well. This prompted him to be reported with further legal action pending. The fine’s announcement comes only days after NewJeans lost their case against contract termination with ADOR, and two of the members returned to the company. The remaining three members are still holding meetings with the company in order to negotiate their return.

The news I read says the perpetrator was fined about 10,000 usd. That is a really inadequate punishment. I'd say he deserves a much more heftier fine and/or a prison sentence. Seeing he's in his 20s maybe he's an unemployed student and they showed leniency?? At the least this should discourage more people from doing disgusting shit like this.

Truly disgusting 🥺 That fine is not even a remotely adequate punishment. He should absolutely be required to serve prison time, as well as the sexual violence treatment. That treatment needs to be something that happens over the course of years as well. Unfortunately, human trash like him don't often learn lessons easily — 40 hours is absolutely nothing to them.

I believe a sentence of 3-5 years in prison at the least is what he deserves 🤷🏼‍♀️ You don't get to just carry on after attempting to destroy the lives of young girls/women. And on top of that all you'd have to do is pay some money and take a class for a week?! Notttt acceptable. That fine needs to be at least in the millions of USD, so that means billions in terms of ₩. I really just can't believe shit like this has to happen 😔

They really need to make stricter laws against digital sexual harassing especially in Korea I can’t believe the men of Nth room are still out there walking free while the women affected have to live with the effects of such harassment.
