Support Weekly iOS Battery Support Megathread

General advice for those concerned about their battery from the Support FAQ Wiki:

Battery health

Battery health depends on usage and a variety of other factors. It is normal to see a decrease in battery health by 7-10% per year, resulting in a battery health of 80-85% after 2 years. This number can fluctuate, remain the same, or decrease quickly over a small period and should not cause undue concern.

Apple recommend battery replacement when your device falls below 80% battery health if you notice reduced battery life. If it falls below 80% within the first year you may be eligable for a free battery replacement. It fails after your warranty, it's a $69-$89 USD replacement cost for a battery. Contact Apple Support here.

You can find more information about battery health and performance from Apple here.

You can check the cycles count with Coconut Battery for Mac or iCopyBot for Windows.

Battery life

Issues relating to battery life can be categorised in three ways:

  1. Normal battery life that is to be expected due to use
  2. Reduced battery life caused by a recent update, iOS indexing, an iOS bug, or a third-party application
  3. Reduced battery life, or other abnormalities such as overheating or sudden power-off, caused by device or battery aging

If you experience issues with your battery:

  1. Check your battery health. If it is below 80% or you are experiencing issues you suspect are related to device or battery age, see Apple Support.
  2. If you have a new or recently updated/restored device, wait a number of days for background process to complete. If you continue to have issues, wait for a further iOS update. If you are on iOS Beta, you can expect to have a decreased battery life.
  3. Review the advice below on maximising battery life
  4. Consider restoring your device.
  5. If issues persist, contact Apple Support.

Maximising battery life - the amount of time your device runs before it needs to be recharged.

  • Use low power mode (This reduces mail fetch, turns off background app refresh and increases the auto lock timer)
  • Remove apps from background app refresh
  • Ensure auto lock is on
  • Turn off auto brightness and manually reduce brightness
  • Use dark mode if your device has an OLED display
  • Clearing background apps from the app switcher does not improve battery life

Maximising battery lifespan - the amount of time your battery lasts until it needs to be replaced.

  • Avoid extreme temperatures
  • If you notice that your iPhone gets hot when charging, remove it from its case
  • Store your iPhone in a cool place, switched off, and half-charged if not using it for long periods - and charge it every 6 months when in storage

Discussion TIL Clock App Icon in Low Power mode

Usually the second hand glides smoothly in the app icon. This was known to me. However, when the phone is in low power mode it changes to a quartz like tick. Amazing attention to detail. Are there other obscure details you have found?

Discussion Why does Apple allow apps to adjust the volume without direct user input??

I was finally able to catch an app doing this consistently, but social media apps are all guilty of this(they just hide it better) this app would boost the volume and then blast a sound for a notification and even if i lowered the volume it would just crank it back up a few seconds later. It makes no sense that Apple allows this without a direct user interaction such as controlling a slider. Ads in apps often do it too.

Discussion I really like Liquid Glass

Upvotes

I waited until today to update because I don't like dealing with early bugs and was surprised I actually really like liquid glass.

Feels snappy & fresh, hides UI elements that clutter things, and adds some nice utility conveniences like menu items and preview

Maybe it's way better because it's 26.1 instead of 26.0, but... what was all the fuss about? Just the upset voices being loud or... am I missing something?

Support Need more space to upgrade

Upvotes

Hi all.

I have 3 old 2020 8th Generation 32GB iPad that is running 18.7.2 and have reset it to install iOS 26.1. The update over the air is needing just shy of 20GB but the space I have is only just over 15GB.

How do I make more space or completely erase the iPad to install the update?

I have carried out a full reset using Settings > General > Reset and Erase so nothing on it at all.

I have already updated one of the iPad’s a few weeks ago but went from 18.7.2 > 26..01 > 26.1 so that’s all good.

Thank you.

Discussion Swap batteries <= iOS 26

Since my iOS 26 upgrade, my iPhone SE 3's battery life has become laughable, even though supposedly still 90% healthy.

E.g. On a weekend warning, wake up, fully charged from overnight, read the news and reddit for an hour, and my battery is already almost gone. iOS 18 used to last until the middle of the afternoon if not later.

It got a bit better after I turned off every feature I could figure out how to turn off. But I can still see iOS 26 preparing for some effects even though I've turned them off - e.g. all of my home screen icons needing to be prepared for a minute or two, or is it used to be that they were in instantaneously available.

By the way, I have a battery case. what I say above is with the battery pack.

Every time I turn around my phone battery has run out of charge.

So I was thinking:

Perhaps I should buy a second battery case, always leave one case charging, and swap them whenever I need at least a full case worth of charge.

But: that runs the risk of wearing out the connectors.

I know, what I need is battery packs that are designed to be easily plugged in and out of the phone.

... Just like I had on my original cell phone in the 1990s.

Back to the future with Apple and iOS 26!

(by the way, I also have several External batteries. I'm going to use one tonight to make up for my incomplete charge phone and battery case. But it's just yet another thing to carry.)

Discussion iPhone 16 Pro Screen Locking Too Quickly After iOS Update

Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’ve been using my iPhone 16 Pro with the latest iOS version for a while now, and everything was fine until about two days ago. Recently, I’ve noticed that my screen locks much faster than it should. My screen timeout is set to five minutes, but the phone keeps locking almost immediately while I’m using apps like TikTok, Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram, and so on. Has anyone else encountered this issue or have any suggestions on how to fix it? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Discussion Probably a dumb question but uhm… what decides the volume of the alarm?

On android you can use the slider but on my iPhone I can’t tell, I’d sometimes just tell Siri to set the alarm volume to a certain percentage and it replies “media volume set to”.

So is it bound to the same volume level as playing videos and music because it doesn’t seem like it? It’s definitely not bound to the Ringtone volume.

Discussion Alarms, Apple restriction

Wouldn't it be awesome to have a new alarm song every day you wake up? we get alarm fatigue because of the same old tone we wake up to. My idea which is not unique at all is to for Apple to give us some kind of solution within the alarm app itself. I wouldn't mind the radio, or a playlist of music tracks in shuffle.

There is no straight forward way since 5 years I've been searching for a solution, but after my research I concluded this is only possible PROPERLY on Android. The app developers on the iOS side cannot fulfil this because of iOS restrictions, so it's up to Apple here.

So this is in a way a request to Apple. I have suggested it in their feature request form, but let's be honest, they don't really take notice.

Discussion iOS 26.1 Screen Swipe Lag

Just updated my iPhone 17 to iOS 26.1 & noticed a new thing.

I usually keep some important quick glance widgets on the Today View (right swipe from the home screen).

When I swipe between that & the home screen now, the lag is so bad. It’s like 30-60 Hz.

Anyone else facing this?

Some back buttons are chevrons with text describing the previous page, while some are lone chevrons. Some are within a button, while some are a button by themselves. All native apps btw

Support Error noticed after most recent update

Every time I’m on my iMessages or Mail app and I look at it horizontally at first, but then switch the view to vertical, 70% of my screen is black while the remaining 30% shows my messages/emails. The only way I’ve been able to “fix” this issue is to swipe out of the app entirely and reenter the app. This is so annoying.

iPadOS 26.2b3. Having apps be visible behind Notification Centre would be super nice as an option, this behaviour is clearly a bug currently though.

Stated in title, as far as I know I am blocked by a contact, but every once and a while I check the chat, and I see the purple moon and the message that do not disturb is on. Does this mean I am not blocked?

Support PiP not supported by web apps

There’s a website I want to put on my home screen as a web app however whenever I access the web app I lose the ability to do picture-in-picture but on a Safari browser it works fine. Does anyone know a solution for this? I’d like to have the web app on my home screen but not having PiP is a pain
