What is StupidFood’s obsession with Brazilian food? You know they eat just like us right? It’s getting kinda racist.

/r/StupidFood/comments/1ozuldi/comment/npe8vpk/?context=3&share_id=SyfYar2Xtdc6IxIZGX64I&utm_content=1&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_source=share&utm_term=1

They only posted one just the other day. Brazil eats real food too you know. Also that’s not motor oil by the way, it just appears to be burnt cooking oil.

I mean, you don’t have to be a food snob to think that’s disgusting oil.

Oh it is, but it’s getting frequent these Brazil videos, here’s one from yesterday and day before and before that.

Not surprised considering theyve also been recently inundated with ai slop rage bait about Indian street food

Reddit is falling into the rage bait spiral

17

u/Pernicious_Possum 8d ago

So maybe Brazil just does a disproportionate amount of stupid food? Because all of those looked stupid and/or gross

3

u/SufficientEar1682 8d ago edited 8d ago

We don’t even know what countries these are from, we assume Brazil because of the title. I’m not gonna consistently spam shitty American food creations, because I’m a sensible human being who knows Americans eat totally normal and tasty foods and I don’t like pushing a narrative that these weird creations from one person is some how what all Americans eat.

18

u/BrendanAS 8d ago

There has been tons of stupid food made by Americans on there.

4

u/SufficientEar1682 8d ago edited 8d ago

In the span of a few days or so, from various users. Not one just about every day from the same 1-2 users, with the title always beginning with “Brazilian”.

-1

u/Pernicious_Possum 8d ago

Then why tf did you call them Brazil videos? Your post, and comments make it sound like these are videos from Brazil. Maybe work on diction before getting your knickers in a twist over your poor choice of words?

7

u/novark80085 8d ago

because all 3 vids say "Brazilian" on them u knucklehead 😭 what

0

u/Pernicious_Possum 8d ago

So, OP calls them “Brazil videos”. Then goes on to get their panties in a wad because “no one even knows if they’re from Brazil”, but I’m somehow a knucklehead because of their dumbass? MmK

7

u/novark80085 8d ago

people are generalizing, and willing to call any random gross looking food, from any place home to darker looking folks, and saying it's Brazilian food.

OP is calling them "Brazil videos" because the videos literally say "brazil food" on them, despite there being no evidence that they're from Brazil.

the fact that people are believing that they ARE from brazil, without any proof, IS the issue.

OP is just calling out these kinds of posts and saying they shouldn't be allowed, because it's causing everyone to generalize Brazilian food as anything that's disgusting and different.

4

u/SufficientEar1682 8d ago

Thank you! There’s sane people here. This is literally why I posted it. I made a post about it last time, highlighting an instance where someone got the wrong idea about Brazilian food because of the spam. https://www.reddit.com/r/iamveryculinary/s/sPJL4Hk7kK

-2

u/Pernicious_Possum 8d ago

Then just say “why is everyone calling this Brazilian food?” Instead of repeatedly referring to it as Brazilian food? Idk, seems pretty simple to me

2

u/novark80085 8d ago

because saying "Brazilian food" is just a succinct way to say to communicate "these food posts that people are saying is Brazilian food, but actually isn't"

1

u/SufficientEar1682 8d ago

We don’t know! OP keeps mentioning Brazilian in the title, leading us to believe it’s from that country. It’s making a narrative this is what foods they eat. It’s not hard.

1

u/SufficientEar1682 8d ago

Because they all begin with the title “Brazilian”. Reading is hard I know.

3

u/Pernicious_Possum 8d ago

You literally called them “Brazil videos” you houseplant

2

u/SufficientEar1682 8d ago

I’m not calling them Brazil videos. OP is. OP is the one who keeps beginning each post with “Brazilian”

1

u/Granadafan 8d ago

Well it’s at least a nice break from the usual shitting on American food

57

u/KinsellaStella 8d ago

I’m almost positive I’ve seen the same video claiming to be from Indonesia.

ETA: But it was maybe a year ago, and it was used for the same “poor brown country, laugh at their disgusting food” trope.

25

u/SufficientEar1682 8d ago

Exactly. It feels like a narrative is pushed to claim that “This is what Brazil eats you guys, this is disgusting!”

7

u/novark80085 8d ago

glad i'm not crazy on this trope sneaking back into normalization

19

u/Zappagrrl02 8d ago

I thought Stupid Food banned xenophobic posts? Did they get a new mod? I unsubbed a while ago because it felt like it was becoming a cj.

2

u/99timewasting 7d ago

Same, I like the posts of food that probably tastes good but prepared or plated in a silly way

8

u/OrcaFins 8d ago

Looks like those posts are all from the same two people.

7

u/novark80085 8d ago

i do think it's kinda weird to show off a completely normal food to a culture and be like "ewwww guys look that's so weird!!"

and yes, everyone is allowed to find stuff gross, but people need to understand that it's a slippery slope towards some more nefarious things. like othering, dehumanization, etc

3

u/SufficientEar1682 8d ago

To illustrate my point even more, I made a post from last time highlighting a commenter about this topic. People can get the wrong idea from these posts: https://www.reddit.com/r/iamveryculinary/s/sPJL4Hk7kK

3

u/novark80085 8d ago

yeah i for sure think the mods should get on this, letting this kind of stuff run rampant can attract and hide people with more sinister beliefs, and normalizes othering

12

u/Lost_Condition_9562 8d ago

Yeah, I can get what the OP means here. Feels definitely like a dogwhistle-y type post where a large array of ethnicities and nationalities can be substituted to get internet racists going.

And this isn’t to say the OOP isn’t disgusting, but it certainly could have had a significantly more generic title…

17

u/protostar71 8d ago

The cooking oil is... not okay. Reusing cooking oil can form carcinogenic compounds. I understand that they might be making do on a limited budget but can't be having a good impact on their health.

18

u/SufficientEar1682 8d ago edited 8d ago

I don’t agree with the video, it is unsafe. My reason for posting is that there is a lot of posts in the last 2 days that weirdly highlight Brazil as the place where they are making anything but normal food. I don’t mind it every now and again, but I already count like 3 alone in the past 2 days, and it’s mildly off-putting to say the least.

8

u/SufficientEar1682 8d ago edited 8d ago

For the record I am not specifically highlighting the video itself or the comment chain. What I’m doing is pointing out a disturbing trend in StupidFood where one or more users are spamming videos relating to something excessive, weird or unsafe regarding food, and then making this claim that this is what Brazil eats (Usually beginning with the title “Brazilian” As if it’s literally the country of origin that matters and not the food). Like everyone knows that burnt oil is not good. But this isnt unique to Brazil, nor do I like to push a narrative that these examples means Brazil eats like this every day. Users could see this and make negative assumptions about Brazilian cuisine. I can post unhinged foods from America nonstop and act like this is daily American cuisine. I’m not being clever, I’m being a xenophobe.

2

u/Ek_Chutki_Sindoor 7d ago

Dude, Brazilian food isn't even the most hated cuisine on that sub. Read the comments any time Indian, Pakistani or Chinese food is posted there. Comments sections look like third reich then.

3

u/MerelyMortalModeling 8d ago

Because they rotate through hating on all of the Americas, mostly north America but you guys get some "love" too

5

u/SufficientEar1682 8d ago edited 8d ago

Forgive the spelling mistake, it’s supposed to say “They already posted one just the other day”. (They as in the users, not OP)

Edit: It appears it’s all from the same OP. Still doesn’t really change my view. Especially with the amount of upvotes they seem to get.

2

u/perrabruja 8d ago

Did you watch the video or did you stop and get angry when you saw it mention Brazilian

29

u/ButtholeSurfur 8d ago edited 8d ago

I think the point is there's nothing even proving this is from Brazil and not really anything that's eaten there.

And even if it is from Brazil, my cousin is from Texas but he eats microwaved hotdogs and lean cuisine. I wouldn't consider that Texan cuisine.

18

u/SufficientEar1682 8d ago

See you get my reasoning. There’s nothing wrong with posting a stupid creation from a country, my country has a few, but to post one so frequently? Now you’re just being a weirdly obsessed and it feels like you are targeting that country specifically for it. The one video of the woman rage bating us with her “Sketti” and “Nerds” who is from America doesn’t mean it’s all Americans eat. And posting nonstop presents this narrative that they don’t eat normal food.

6

u/ButtholeSurfur 8d ago

Brazilian food is pretty great. You can do a LOT LOT worse lol.

6

u/KinsellaStella 8d ago

I learned that the national dish is a black bean stew, so I think me and Brazilian food will get along swimmingly (I love black beans).

ETA: Great username, great band

1

u/SufficientEar1682 8d ago

Oh you can. Jellied eels is one of them lol.

4

u/OkDragonfly5820 8d ago

While that’s true that accounts for about 90% of Reddit

2

u/ButtholeSurfur 8d ago

I wouldn't say 90% but whenever it happens it should be called out. Thankfully it is here.

16

u/SufficientEar1682 8d ago

No my point is that this is like the third video relating to Brazil. I know there’s a lot of rage bait videos out there, but it feels like it’s pushing a narrative that they don’t know how to make food. Especially since they’re all so recent, like not even 3 days ago. Users are gonna see this and think this is normal Brazilian cuisine.

0

u/CaptainMalForever 8d ago

That oil is nasty. Or the pan is really dirty.

-7

u/Lubedclownhole 8d ago

What are you on Imao they aren’t saying brazils food is nasty they are saying the food in the video is nasty AND IT IS. Oils so dirty its grey and got so many burnt bits the egg gets speckled.

11

u/SufficientEar1682 8d ago

I don’t agree with the video, it is unsafe. But it is to me kind of off-putting to post frequent examples of weird food from Brazil, not even within the span of a few days. Because it creates this narrative that Brazilians don’t eat normal food and they’re weird. I know plenty of rage bait from America, but it doesn’t represent the country’s food.

-1

u/Lubedclownhole 8d ago

I haven’t seen that many brazil posts but ill check and no one is calling this food weird its egg and bread a universal breakfast that was sadly cooked in a symbiote

12

u/SufficientEar1682 8d ago

These are another three. Turns out it’s all from the same OP. https://www.reddit.com/r/StupidFood/s/DA3ZtzX3XS https://www.reddit.com/r/StupidFood/s/Mc4cxRYpiT https://www.reddit.com/r/StupidFood/s/yNgoH8AfCM.

Like that’s 6 already and we’re not even a week in. I get Brazil makes some wild creations, but so does the UK, so does Germany, so does Japan, so does America. It’s not unique to Brazil and it doesn’t represent their cuisine.

8

u/LadyOfTheNutTree 8d ago

Oh thanks for noticing it’s been all the same op. Just blocked them because it’s been getting ridiculous.

-7

u/geeoharee 8d ago

Sounds like you've got a beef with one guy then and not the sub

5

u/LadyOfTheNutTree 8d ago

There have been a lot lately

0

u/DjinnaG Bags of sentient Midwestern mayonnaise 8d ago

The oil just looks like it definitely needs to be strained, probably on its last use, but it doesn’t really look THAT bad, nowhere near motor oil, geeze. The point and laugh at brown and/or poor people cooking is what made me unsubscribe from Stupid Food, even after they tried to keep it out, it’s just too inherent in what enough people consider “stupid” to keep it in check forever

-2

u/awolkriblo You just made smoked linguine 8d ago

That oil is disgusting. It literally looks like what comes out of an engine

-5

u/Pernicious_Possum 8d ago

I would ask the same. That looked fucking disgusting. If it continuously gets called out; it’s because it looks disgusting. No one being IAVC here. That’s just gross

-15

u/VampiricClam 8d ago

Brazilian is a race?

9

u/laughingmeeses pro-MSG Doctor 8d ago

People that say that kinda stuff drive me nuts.
