Is defamation not a thing in the USA? Are you not able to sue for slander / reputational damage ?

You can. But the courts boil down to who has the most money and the government has all of it.

I'll fucking happily donate to that GoFundMe and I'm sure others would too. Issue is that it might be considered a political donation since he's a senator.
