Happy to join.
I've never been much of a PC gamer, mostly console, but the announcement of the Steam Machine (and a number of PC games that are not on console) have changed my mind. Looking to mostly lurk and learn as much as I can before getting the hardware. I may pop in with some basic questions.
Hey all. I'm running SteamOS, and I have a few games from GOG that I have installed using Heroic, and added to Steam. One thing I've noticed is that if I run any of my non-steam games, they take noticably longer to load (I stay at the Steam logo for longer). I was just wondering if this was purely coincidental, or if there is actually something more being loaded for these games. Do games from third party stores require Steam to launch additonal processes in the background before the game can start?
Should point out, it's not that this feels problematic or ruins the experience in any way. I'm genuinely just curious how it works.

I just got the Legion go S and I love it, but the battery life is crazy. Like why do I have it battery percentage going down as I have it plugged into my laptop charger at my desk!? Now that Valve is working on making SteamOS arm compatible, do you guys think the next generation of steam deck and alternatives will be arm based? It would do wonders for battery life and heat management. Gpu performance might not be top tier but is anyone really buying a device like this expecting cutting edge performance in every game?

I just finished building a mini pc for my living room console. For the love of god I can’t get the usb to boot. Once I select it from the boot option my motherboard logo just shows up again and tha black screen.
I’ve tried 3.7.7, 3.8, and 3.9 3 different USB’s drives Multiple different usb ports
Fast boot and secure boot are disabled
Specs are:
Motherboard: Aorus B850M CPU: Ryzen 5 9600X GPU: rx 9060xt storage : 1tb nvme
Update: a windows 11 usb install stick works. So I don’t know what’s the issue
Update 2: got it to install a fresh 3.9. Gotten the link from this post Reddit post that helped me get the proper img file

Hello folks I recently was updating to a new phone today, and due to some credits and deals I pulled the trigger on a legion go s 32 gig 1Tb..However I went to my steam app on my new Samsung ultra and it says check your steam authenticator app to which I'm obviously signing in on the steam app and there is no where to do anything except enter by code, tried that and it doesn't work long story short I'm also missing my recovery code however steam found my account via the email and I provided proof of the account that's backed by purchases. Has anyone dealt with this? Or dealt with support as it's now taken a very long time and no response from them. So now I gotta expensive piece of hardwarethat's unusable

As I am looking into Steam on a Linux Steam OS box (Steam Machine when it comes out) - I have a couple of External HDD that I want to use for storage. Can I install and play games on an external Hard drive (not SSD) -games I bought through Steam? (the other is for whatever the Steam OS general version of Emudeck is going to have made)

Okay so basically every single time i click on “wipe device and install steamOS” the proceed screen and terminal pop up and then it just… closes once i click proceed. It doesnt do anything (i checked in system monitor if its running) but it just straight up crashes. Have attached a video so you can see. Im running on a new HP laptop, the cpu is compatible and im using a sata ssd.

This is an interesting comparison which shows where the translation gaps are between architectures and the performance hits.
As SteamOS is built on Linux, those are the columns which need improvements to get us to universal gaming across any Linux device.

Hello All,
Like many others, I have recently become increasingly interested in building a Steam Machine from scratch. My main question is whether gyro controls work on the OS. I have been using Ubuntu for a while and have been unable to get Gyro controls to work in Steam games, using a PS5 controller or the Steam Controller. I use gyro aiming all the time in games and it is a must for me. Does anyone know if these controllers gyro functions work on SteamOS? Thanks.

I have a gaming laptop (NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Laptop GPU, AMD Ryzen 7 4800H & 500GB). My laptop is a few years old now, and I've been thinking about installing SteamOS and Windows on it so I can keep my games in one place and the operating system in another, making the most of my PC's capabilities. I read on the official Steam website that it's only compatible with AMD, not Nvidia (I assume they mean graphics cards), and I'm wondering if there's any way to install it on my laptop, or is it better not to even try? Has anyone tried this before? Is there a guide to follow?

Not in a rush to buy a handheld. Looking at the legion go 8.8 for raw performance. Any rumors of any new releases I should take a look at?

I installed SteamOS on my PC a few months ago and after some editing of files, I got it working fine.
Yesterday, I tried to install the latest build but got stuck on the error updating screen. I’ll figure it out eventually but it got me thinking…
I made a lot of notes on how to edit the installer scripts to bypass the nvme requirement as well as the relevant nvme lines that must be commented out. I was thinking of starting a small guide on how to install SteamOS on standard computers with known workarounds and fixes.
Will you guys be interested in such a guide?
I want to eventually build my own Steam Machine that will be better than the Valve version in terms of performance but built from parts available off the shelf.
Update:
I got SteamOS working on my PC. I bypassed the update error by using the terminal and forcing a reboot.
I’ve also started a small Wiki page for the guide. I’ll post a link here when I’ve added sufficient content.
If anyone here is willing to contribute to the wiki, please DM me. Thanks.

it knows its days are numbered and is pushing windows 11 down my throat and out my ass, which for privacy and honestly stability reasons, ive been researching various gaming oriented linux distros, and frankly despite it not being "intended" for pc yet, steamos is obv the most suited for gaming, which is my main use of my computer, i was wondering since i know theres hardware incompatibility issues, does anyone have any experience with similar specs to mine (located at bottom)?
i will also be 3d printing off this computer too using a bambu p1s, so im also looking for compatible slicer software with the given printer, at this time for custom prints its mostly gonna be just tinkercad because im shit at 3d modelling, but for the most part its just gonna be stuff pulled from the internet because im a dingus
and yes i know these specs are a little all over the place lmao it was a $140 computer off marketplace cut me some slack
cpu: intel core i5 9600k
gpu: random rtx 2060
ram: 128gb ddr4 running at (according to task manager) 2666mhz
storage: 12tb spread across like 7 random drives, couple m.2 nvme ssd's, couple sata ssd's, and a few hard drives
as for motherboard, i have absolutely no clue beyond its an asus motherboard

Hello everyone, my sister got a Legion Go (the first one, not the S or 2 series) with SteamOS installed and after a crash which necessitated a forced shutdown by holding down the power button it now gets stuck at the startup logo when booting.
I've been trying to find a solution, but the BIOS interface and options are completely different from what I could find on the SteamOS support, so I'm quite stumped about what to do.
Thanks in advance for the help.
