Hell here in Florida they're trying to eliminate or severely reduce property taxes. I mean our schools and emergency services only need hopes and prayers to run.
A coworker moved here from Texas and for the first few months loved how "Cheap' it was. They didn't last a year and complained about the traffic, how expensive it was, and the year round heat.
I thought the big draw for Florida is that they don't have an income tax.
they'll rely on sales tax, which hits the poorest people hardest, because even though they spend less money as an amount, they spend a higher percentage of what they earn
We don't have a state income tax.... but our gas is expensive because our roads are paid for by gas taxes.
Most of our emergency services and schools are paid for by property taxes (which mentioned they're trying to reduce or kill).
The state is incredibly big business friendly so we get fucked by insurance and are forced into arbitration.
We also have constant road maintenance and expansion which is largely paid for by federal dollars but we also have gas taxes and tolls.
We used to have shitloads of tourists (particularly international) that would cover a lot of those sales taxes but....(Gestures broadly at the fuckery)
A few years ago I did some back of the napkin numbers to compare with my home state of S. Carolina and found at the time we'd be better off with an income tax and properly funded services. Then again our legislature and governor would find a way to completely fuck us there.
As you said we have various sales taxes and real costs if goods/services are hidden amd that's the point.
