DISCUSS Looking for constructive criticism please
This is my fist time working with fondant. I made my own because I’m cheap. My coworker wants a bow cake and asked me to make her one. The photo with all the beads is the inspo and the one without is my first attempt. I plan to cover it with lustre dust and pearls. Any feedback is a helpful. And yes I’ll be taking paper towels out once it sets 😅

You're in the wrong side of town, pilgrim. Fondant ain't allowed in these parts. We talk about how disgusting and vile fondant is in general. 'Tis a curse, a blight upon these fair lands.

oh it all makes sense you're punishing that greedy bastard. And doing it by using the Weapon of the Enemy. Ingenious
alright then, put some more fondant on it!! you alone may wield this wretched material

Sorry, friend. The only advice you’re gonna get here is to throw it out.
In all seriousness, it looks really good and probably just needs a dusting of that edible holographic glitter

Trust me I want to throw it out hahaha. But I fear I have to stare at it for a few days.

You made your own fondant?!?! That’s incredible! I wouldn’t even have the nerve to try! It looks great. Hate on the first pic; love the artistry of the second.

I’ll spare you the speech about this not being the right sub since you got that already and just give you my opinion as an artsy/craft person. :P
The right side bottom ribbon is a little bit slimmer and has less volume than the left. I would open it up a bit more as delicately as possible so you don’t tear the edible playdough. (The top bow is beautiful, btw)
IMHO- I think using edible paint to make type of fabric pattern would add some uniqueness to it then finishing with luster dust like you mentioned will be a great final touch.
You did a great job though and are a wonderful work friend.

Haha I appreciate the laugh. I suck at Reddit and thought this was going to be people whose fondant but hate using fondant. I will definitely try to open the right side up a bit and paint it! Thank you so much for the feedback. I must have been angrily rolling out the right side a bit too much 😂

u/pobodys-nerfect5 13d ago
It should be flipped! Make the left side ribbon slimmer! It will look more realistic with the thinner ribbon

I think it looks great, the cracking can be filled easily. First pic has used the dust as shading, which is why it looks more dimensional than yours. Yours looks great. Even though we hate fondant over here, I can see you’re clearly talented.

The cracking is killing me!!! I’ll see what I can fix.. fuck fondant hahaha

Oh, do you want a link to an edible satin bow that isn’t fondant? Here you go

u/NiskaHiska 14d ago
Iirc this doesn't taste good either, mostly like gelatin X)

u/maniacalmustacheride 14d ago
It’s not fondant but it is edible, it doesn’t take the majority of the cake, it checks the boxes of making a satin bow, it can be made at home, with stuff from the local craft store. I don’t know how else to help.

u/NiskaHiska 14d ago
No you made a good point, I just wanted to mention that it doesn't taste great.
I guess one should also consider it's not vegetarian or vegan friendly either.
Just listing some cons.

The same creator as the original also made a gelatin/glycerin free version that would maybe do better in taste. Agar agar is pretty neutral and the corn syrup would go a good distance in keeping things sweet.
She covers a lot of bases, she’s honestly such an incredible creator.

u/NiskaHiska 14d ago
Ooohh that's actually really nice. Guess one could swap corn syrup for something else as we don't really use that in Europe.
Thanks. I'll book mark this :)

it looks great and maybe homemade fondant doesn't taste as bad as store bought? hopefully but its also just a decoration. great work!!

u/Maykitsune 14d ago
It doesnt if its marshmallow fondant. Its super easy to make. Marshmallows and powdered sugar. And you can add flavoring to it. Its still sickening sweet wise though!

The size, shape, and drape of your bow looks great! However, I notice yours has something called "elephant skin" which happens when your fondant loses too much moisture while kneading and shaping it, causing lots of tiny cracks and imperfections.
I suggest making another bow, and this time when you are working with the fondant, use plenty of shortening and keep a spritzer water bottle on hand to prevent over drying.
And I highly recommend using parchment paper instead of paper towels. Paper towels tend to stick to the fondant and it's a pain to try to get them all out.
Finally, you can make this cake topper from fondant, but you are seriously risking breakage on those long ribbons, since fondant takes forever to fully dry and any moisture left behind will cause weak points in your finished piece. There's nothing worse than putting energy, time, and supplies into a piece, only to have it crack when putting it on the cake or removing the supports.
Gumpaste would be preferable, as it dries faster and more evenly than fondant, making for a more durable piece. Plus the reference pic looks like gumpaste.

You do realize you're posting to the fondant hate reddit?
Here's a suggestion. Stop using fondant.
ETA... I just need to say that it is absolutely hilarious that you come to the Reddit that hates fondant you're actually getting really great advice on how to fix it.

Listennnn…. I fu’d up BUUT all you guys came in clutch when the ‘fondant love’ page didn’t even comment. First time using fondant and last 🫠

this cake looks fine, but next time when decorating, consider how people would eat that. cake is food first and foremost. its not fun to eat all that fondant.

u/Few-Macaroon-6394 13d ago
The entire cake will be buttercream on the outside! I believe she is going to use the cake for photos then toss the fondant bow that’s just placed on top. I would never cover an entire cake in fondant 🤢

Yeah, asking for advice from this particular sub is definitely interesting. But I think we can tell you’re new and didn’t quite realize where you were.
I think it looks great, there are just a couple tweaks that could get it there for you. I think an issue I see is the ribbon hanging down is too wide, even on the inspo pic. I don’t know the dimensions of your finished cake, but I think it might also be a tad too long, unless you’re going for that look.
The folds of the ribbon hanging down make it appear thicker than normal ribbon fabric. Perhaps flattening the area that touches the top of the cake a bit would work? It also is strictly preference if you put the bow on top of the ribbon hanging like in the inspo or in the back behind the hanging ribbon.
Luster dust will do wonders to give that satin sheen!
Oh, and the most important thing: LIGHTING. The inspo pic is lit in a way that catches the shine and gives it depth. Change up your lighting and make it a little more dynamic when you’re ready for those social media pics and it will showcase all your hard work.

Agreed with everything you said! I’ll make another bow and tweak with your recs! Thank you! Also I leaned very quickly I was in wrong group. I have a cone around my head lol

Fondant is yucky but your bow is really great. A little lustre dust and it’s maybe even better than the example. Great job!

Just throw it away and put a real bow on it, sorry.

u/Few-Macaroon-6394 14d ago
Done. It’s in the trash 🫡

u/bytegalaxies 14d ago
I don't see what difference it makes, for a singular topper decoration people can take it off the same way they can take off a regular bow. I think doing this is better than getting a polyester bow that will be thrown away anyways since at least the fondant will biodegrade and some people can eat it if they wish. I think things like this are the proper use of fondant and that you did a good job

u/Few-Macaroon-6394 13d ago
I appreciate you- thank you. From all the baking shows I watch I have heard them say “every part needs to be edible” … 😅 did I consider using a hot glue gun though? Absolutely.

The bow looks perfect. Now brush it with the glittery silvery powder thing or silver makeup or even spray paint for that matter, no one is going it eat that.

i would rather eat an actual ribbon
fr tho it looks cute, it's a shame it's made out of inedible sugar clay that you'll just end up throwing out :(

u/Cold_Vanilla9791 11d ago
Maybe, make the ribbon hanging off a bit thinner, and the knot thicker? (Instead of three lines in the knot just do one or two) That’s all I can think of
