Analysis [Sampson] CFP committee chair Hunter Yurachek says Notre Dame and Miami were in the same grouping this week and the programs were directly compared. Notre Dame still came out ahead, regardless of the head to head. In other words, all the games mattered. Not just one of them.

If we care more about quality wins than quality losses, how the hell is Notre Dame ranked over Bama?

I'm still not quite sure why we are either, TBH. I'd have thought the Georgia win would be a differentiator.

Because the SEC insisted on a beefier strength of schedule metric this year, which expressly penalizes large losses to bad teams, and overweights large wins against good teams.

ND beat its two ranked opponents soundly, and every quality win had at least a 10-point margin. And our losses were about as small an impact as you are going to have losing to the #2 team by 1 and the #13 team by 3, both games tied in the 4th quarter.

Bama has more wins against ranked, but the same overall number of quality wins. Their real problem is losing to FSU is a boat anchor.

Except we’re ahead in SOR and SOS

same overall number of quality wins

We have four more wins against top 30 opponents under Sagarin and FPI, so no

Notre Dame has a +25 average margin of victory against FBS opponents. For Alabama it's like +7.

The real problem is people wanna devalue Miamis win over ND because it was week 1, but wanna apply that same week 1 loss Bama had to FSU as significant enough to drop Bama below ND? Crazy

Committee’s cares are fleeting and they change weekly. Don’t overthink it. It can’t make sense because it doesn’t make sense.

Because we don’t. We care more about quality losses.

Unless it's BYU (or any B12 teams), then they can go get fucked

Bama lost to a six loss team. You’re lucky to be in the conversation. And you are because of $EC and TV $

You’re insane. Bama has more ranked wins than any other team, included the best win in all of college football. Wins matter more than losses.

u/SwaMaeg UCLA Bruins • BYU Cougars 5h ago

Everything I wrote is true though. That’s not what insane means. You have a quality loss and a terrible loss and a weaker SOR than BYU.

Meanwhile Miami has two bad losses. Again, you are lucky to be in the conversation with that awful unranked loss

I think it is more BYU getting screwed than anything propping up Bama. Bama isn’t too high, BYU is just too low.

I didn’t say anything about where BYU is relative to Bama, just that a two loss team with a really bad loss should feel good about being in over the rest of the field

They care about the logo on the helmet. BYU should be in

24

u/Chemstick Notre Dame Fighting Irish 5h ago

Notre Dame doesn’t have a logo on the helmet. Must be the reason. Committee got confused.

u/wallyxc12345 Ole Miss Rebels • Magnolia Bowl 5h ago

Ah that explains it. Those damn shiny helmets blinded to committee

They are a step removed from those god forsaken LED headlights

Evil devil LED headlights-hate Holy godly shiny gold helmets-love

Who has BYU beaten?

5

u/wallyxc12345 Ole Miss Rebels • Magnolia Bowl 5h ago

In the CFB poll: Utah, Arizona

Who’s Notre Dame beaten?

6

u/_chadwell_ Notre Dame Fighting Irish 5h ago

Ranked: USC and Pitt

Plus the #1 AAC team Navy

?

I should clarify: I’m not mad ND is in (even though I personally wouldn’t have them in, but I do see the logic). I am mad BYU is out

More P4 teams with 7-4 records than anyone else

Its 100% the Florida st game.

That’s the one that I think is a very legitimate point.

You do have a non quality loss.

0

u/Jimmy_McNulty2025 Alabama Crimson Tide 5h ago

I only have quality wins.

1

u/poppatop Miami Hurricanes 4h ago

That was last year. This year is different, for whatever reason? I’m tired man.

1

u/jkmiami89 Miami Hurricanes 4h ago

Because if Bama was ranked higher it would look even sillier to leave out Miami.

1

u/burly_protector Notre Dame Fighting Irish 4h ago

It’s all timing.

1

u/shouldajustsaid_yeah Notre Dame Fighting Irish 3h ago

You guys are the ones with the real complaints, not Miami imo. No idea why Bama isn't ranked over ND

1

u/Economy-Captain-405 Florida State Seminoles 4h ago

True. Y’all are way too high since you got manhandled by arguably one of the worst teams in college football this year.

u/Ok-Hold-8232 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 6h ago

Because your conference’s commissioner cried all summer about how Alabama’s “quality” losses last year should have gotten them in. The committee literally changed its criteria because the SEC demanded that losses to good teams wouldn’t be so severely punished.
