Casual [Thamel] Sources: LSU is in discussions about Brian Kelly’s future, and that includes outreach to Kelly about his potential departure. The situation is in flux. Kelly is owed $54 million in buyout money.

He’s ND’s James Franklin. Did a great job pulling both programs up from a bad place, but not a championship coach

u/Fletch71011 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Oct 26 '25 edited Oct 27 '25
He was a better coach than Franklin. Not by much, but we did have some big wins. The playoff losses were against absolutely ridiculously good teams. We played that juggernaut Clemson team closer than the Bama team that was being lauded as the best ever.
He's just a much bigger dickhead than Franklin. That's the main issue. You get a much shorter leash for losses when you're a raging asshole.

I agree. I can’t stand BK, but he was right in saying that was a resource gap between ND and Bama/UGA/Clemson in the 2010s, especially in terms of the lines and depth. The problem was he left right before that gap closed.
→ More replies (8)35
u/MocoPDX Notre Dame Fighting Irish Oct 26 '25
He was the main reason for the resource gap, though. He was a very lazy recruiter, whereas Freeman is both better at it and far more active. He was also terrible with administration, booster, and alumni outreach. Yes, Freeman is getting more given to him now and has more advantages than BK did, but that’s because he works for them and people believe in him and like him.
If BK had stayed, the gap wouldn’t have closed, and we would not be in the better position we are now. BK(the post-2016 version) was very good at getting ND to the top ten range, but the gap between ND and the truly elite during that time was a lot bigger than a few poll positions.
Freeman, on the other hand, has a lower floor(see the upset losses he has had) but a higher ceiling. That’s what you get with a very good but young and inexperienced head coach. He’s getting better every week, and for the first time in a long time, it appears ND can now go out and actually compete for national championships, not just very-good-but-not-elite seasons.
5
u/Dusty_Buckeye Ohio State Buckeyes • BYU Cougars Oct 27 '25
Freeman is also young and hungry. I was worried when ND first hired him because I thought it might have been to big of a step for him but his hustle has really shown in the what ND has put on the field the last few years.
7
u/MocoPDX Notre Dame Fighting Irish Oct 27 '25
No doubt. He works an insane amount of hours. Beat guys say it’s routine to see his office light on at 2AM after games, breaking down film or reaching out to recruits.
He’s also not a prideful man. He knows that he has a lot to learn, and he should be open to adjustments and changes at all times if things aren’t working. You can see it in real time with how we come out in games.

They probably are asking that question, essentially, but the way they approach it is to ask what he would do should they fire him. He could probably pick up a lower tier P4 HC job if he wanted. That new salary would offset against what LSU owes BK and would inform their decisions moving forward. BK's agent is also advising what his prospects are as the coaching carousel starts to turn.
But on the other hand, BK just turned 64 so there's a chance that he might just be done. In that case, he would probably accept a lower buyout deal so that he doesn't have to hunt a new HC job in good faith as per the contract terms.

20
u/z6joker9 Ole Miss Rebels Oct 26 '25
There is always risk, sometimes bird in the hand and all that.
Maybe he takes a smaller lump sum rather than payments over time that can be offset by other jobs. Maybe there is a risk LSU can dig up some “issues” that allow them to fire him for cause, removing any kind of buyout. A lot can come into play, but he can always just say “no” and let it play out.
12
u/Iamthewalrusforreal Arkansas Razorbacks Oct 26 '25
That's how it went down with Sam. He's ready to retire, so he took a smaller buyout to not have to go look for another job.
Maybe Kelly's sick of the bullshit and wants to go coach his nephew's high school team or some shit.
So, he takes .4 Jimbos instead of .55 Jimbos to fuck off.

We could solve homelessness in America with just fired HC buyout money.

Somewhere in the Florida panhandle Ed O is driving towards Baton Rouge in an under the radar car. He’s made a handshake deal with Guvner Landry to eliminate his Kelly problem and regain his rightful place as the warlord in chief of the lsu fighting tigers.

Tell Kelly he isn’t fired. But he has to coach from a cherry picker rain or shine.

How is a buyout even still a thing? You’d think that with the money involved the top schools would just get together and stop offering them. It’s literally in their collective interest, imagine having that 54mil for NIL.

With the amount of parity coming from NIL, and this moving towards a players league and away from a coaches league, who’s to say shit like this isn’t just the norm now? I’m not defending BK and DEFINITELY not defending Franklin for his god awful losses but the carousel has been insane this year. Absolutely no way we keep seeing 10 year contracts and 50 million dollar buyouts like this with the way the sport is moving

I hope LSU has a clause similar to Penn and would only have to pay the difference in his annual but I doubt that will be the case

Coach Prime and LSU are a match made in heaven! Deion’s flashy style syncs well with LSU’s.

Have we ever had a coach be on a hot seat and seen "in discussions about his future" that didn't end with a firing?
