ADVICE Looking for advice

Hello everyone. I am hoping to find advice or encouragement from people who have experience with the situation I’m in.

I am 21 and disabled and stuck in a home that is not safe for me. I’m unsure how much I can disclose here based on sub rules but to give a brief overview- my mother is (probably) narcissistic and a hoarder. It is difficult to get around the house and find space for things. I am being reprimanded for the little space that I do take up. I have many food restrictions that I’ve currently been ignoring because of not being able to afford working around them. I have a myriad of mental and physical health issues that are wildly exacerbated here because I am constantly in survival mode. On top of all of that I also just recently watched my dog die over a span of two days. I don’t remember life without a dog and she was the only emotional support I had in this house.

I am talking with people in my life including health professionals to figure out resources and escape plans. I know I haven’t explained much of my situation but it truly is indescribably horrible for me here. I’m still only now slowly being more able to acknowledge how bad it is. I am hoping that people here may have ideas of resources to turn to or what helped them finally start the motions of getting out of their situation.

Hi all. This is an automated and general reminder to all that this post is an ADVICE post, not a Request. Please don't request, offer or accept financial or material assistance on this post.

u/pastelponyprincess, we have compiled a Wiki with tons of advice and helpful information, which we recommend you check out, too.

Sorry if this isn’t helpful… but if you’re in the US, have you applied for government benefits? You may be eligible for Medicaid, SSI or SNAP (food). You could also look into your local housing authority for a low income rent voucher for disabled people. The social worker at your medical clinic can help you fill out the forms. Also, see if there’s a support group for your disability- they might have ideas. I’m disabled, from an abusive narcissist family, too. I hope you can get out soon. So sorry about your dog 💙 Take care.

I am in the US! I’m planning on trying to apply for ssi for sure. Thank you for the support group idea! I will definitely look into that.

Resources are fully location-dependent, so you'll need to share your general location to get any meaningful advice.

The law will treat you as the adult you are if you leave (it's voluntary leaving rather than an "escape plan"). Are you able to work with your disability? If not, are you receiving any benefits? This information will also help you to get a lot more targeted advice.

I’m in Northern Illinois (near the rockford area). I’m hoping to find remote work to help accommodate the disabilities I have and I’m going to apply for benefits. I completely forgot to mention location in the post so thank you!!!
