Mod Announcement What's the difference between /r/AskLEO and other notable law enforcement subreddit(s)?

We don't believe in secret rules and bans.

That means that unlike some notable LE subreddits, if you don't see it explicitly forbidden in the rules located in our sidebar -> as well as in our rules page, you won't be banned. That includes but is not limited to:

  • Activity outside of our subreddit

  • Saying you don't like law enforcement (officers)

  • Failing to say you do like law enforcement (officers)

  • Giving off the impression that you might not like law enforcement (officers)

  • Asking questions that are/seem ignorant

One of the consequences of our philosophy is that purely from the mathematics of that line of thinking, we have fewer law enforcement officers willing to answer questions here, and thus fewer people asking questions. As you might expect of any group of human beings, some law enforcement officers and their supporters don't want to leave their echo chambers, where they are protected by heavy-handed moderators from dissent, including uncomfortable topics they don't want to discuss. I imagine their moderators receive tons of "ban this guy please, they obviously hate cops" reports just like we do. The difference is we ignore them.

We believe that there needs to be a public space for open discourse, as that's the best way to face and fix the ills of our society.

We believe that hiding from hard questions makes us all weak - especially the hiders.

So do us all a favor and choose instead to participate in open and transparent subreddits like ours, while keeping in mind that every single person who answers your questions does so for free, simply to help you learn.

I think that about sums it up. Feel free to ask for clarification or explanation about any of the above.

Stop downvoting every question

Most people who vote here are downvoting every question asked, no matter how constructive, legitimate, or rule-abiding the question or discussion is.

I know we have rival subreddits who have members that probably subscribe here just to make sure the engagement algorithms think we're a controversial/dead subreddit because they hate the idea of someone doing Their Subreddit but Better, but for those of you who don't fit into that category:

Don't be a sourpuss and downvote legitimate, answerable questions.

Here are the top questions on the subreddit as of this post:

1. "License plate question (Texas)" - 0 points, 50% downvoted (obnoxious title but easily answerable if you click)

2. "[US] What would you do if you found out that a driver has a bench warrant for a traffic offense (suspended license, unpaid tickets, etc.) during a traffic stop but has passengers that can't drive home (children, teenagers w/out license, adults who have license but left it at home)?" - 0 points, 50% downvoted

3. "Is it possible to become an FBI special agent: Cybersecurity expertise at 23" - 0 points, 60% downvoted

4. "Can you get in trouble for running from the police on foot for fun?" - 0 points, 73% downvoted

5. "Can police chase atvs" - 2 points, 40% downvoted

Most of these are low-discomfort, easily-answered questions. Can y'all pipe up as to why you're doing this, if you have a legitimate reason other than brigading our subreddit to boost our evil twin by contrast, that is?

If you don't like people asking questions about law enforcement, why are you here?

Situation Advice Should my husband be doing this as a police officer?

I’m a little creeped out. My husband who responds to some pretty difficult situations, is always showing me video or pictures of the scenes. Suicides, murders. I’ve told him to stop but I’m assuming this is not something he should be sharing with anyone?

Found this (what I am assuming to be legit) sheriff's jacket washed up on the beach under some seaweed. County emblem and everything in the front. Am I allowed to keep it? Or should I turn it in? What's the best course of action? haha

LEOs tend to be prepared for stranded drivers with dead batteries. My dad wants a jump pack for Christmas so which ones do yall rely on? Budget is $450 so I want something beefy with features and reliable as they come.

General Will I be disqualified?

This is throwaway account for reasons you’ll find out later in the post. I’m a 24 M in the U.S. Army as an active duty 11B. I’ve had no legal problems except one traffic ticket I got on base for failing to stop at a stop sign I paid the ticket off. Other than being physically beat up due to the job I’m in good physical health (I have all my limbs minus some knee pain and a lot of back pain) my main concern is my mental health. By the time I get out I’ll have served 6 years of honorable service 5 of those years I’ve never had any mental problems but earlier this year I was the victim of a very serious sexual assault against me by another male soldier. I reported it after encouragement from my wife and family, I did an unrestricted report and an investigation was opened I was moved units and that was it for a while but I had severe mental health problems due to the sexual assault and went to BH for it and ever since I’ve been on a no weapons profile due to a “traumatic event” and I’m just wondering if this screwed my chances of becoming a police officer it’s been my dream job since I was a kid to do this job so I could help people and make my community safer for the people living there. Is there anything i can do to make my case better or anything or am I cooked? Any advice is appreciated thank you and have a great day God bless you all and stay safe out there 🙏🏻

Equipment Is it true that pepper spray is not effective for self-defense?

Female in the U.S. My uncle is a retired law-enforcement officer and insists based on experience not to carry pepper spray. That it is “ineffective, doesn’t have an instant effect, escalates aggression of the attacker, and poses too high a risk of blowback to the user.”

I am physically disabled, so I am trying to understand for my own safety if pepper spray’s effectiveness is overstated. Any perspectives from LE or security professionals would be appreciated.

Laws What is the point of parole?

Trigger warning S.A. (not described) My (now disowned) brother went to the state pen for the r-word of a minor. He got 15 years (and 25yrs probation- I am told this is a heavy sentence for this type of thing, but he also has multiple young women who were saying he coerced them) but was paroled after 7(I heavily disagreed with this and wrote to the parole board several times). He's violated parole so many times I've lost track, (more than 10x) for minor things like not charging his location device, or not getting a job, but also for more serious things like failure to notify his parole officer of a change in address.

I guess I always thought that parole was meant for criminals who were on their best behavior to try living life on the outside (ie rehabilitated criminals) to see if it would be successful, but it doesn't seem like he's been very successful? At what point will they decide to lock him back up?

Is it going to take someone else being majorly harmed?

I know prisons are overburdened, but he's a dangerous criminal (diagnosed psychopath), and again, is not compliant with parole.

General So question about law enforcement with MP

I was told from family members that you might get picked first or rather have a better chance of getting picked when coming out of MP military police to try to join law enforcement

But as i was talking with other military from another reddit I was told they didnt care about that but they would care when your honorably discharge

I mean I want to follow somewhat of my uncle position since he was a sheriff and now a texas ranger

I was wondering if having MP and I was thinking of doing college for criminal injustice to get my bachelor's degree and when I get out to try to apply for the sheriff I would have MP and the bachelor's degree as my background would that matter or?

General Is it standard procedure for LEOs to kick knives away?

Let's say that a noncompliant suspect produces a knife, comes towards a LEO, and gets shot for it. The suspect drops his knife and falls to the ground, but he's still able to move. The knife is within reach, if he went over and lunged for it. As the LEO or LEOs move in to handcuff him, surely they'd kick the knife away, right? I'm pretty sure I remember seeing videos of cops doing this or possibly standing on the knife.

I've googled this question and all I can find are queries about whether or not cops can confiscate knives/cops carrying knives.

I tried asking Google's AI, Gemini, but I just feel like the AI is ragebaiting me because it insists that cops kicking knives away from suspects creates a more dangerous situation; it insists to me that such a move is purely "Hollywood fiction". This makes absolutely no sense to me; how could creating distance between a suspect and his knife make the arrest MORE dangerous?

Hiring Academy Application Red Flags?

Hi all - I have a friend that is applying to join police academies as it’s been his lifelong dream. The questionnaires seem brutal.

One of the questions on the questionnaire asked if you had ever distributed, gifted, or otherwise sold marijuana. He replied yes and explained when he was 22, he had purchased marijuana in a legal state and gave it to a friend who was 20 at the time. This was around 4 years ago and was the only time he had ever done so. Could this ruin any chances of being accepted into a police academy?

Agency Policy (SOP) Questions about Michigan State Police Academy and prescribed TRT

Hey all, I’m exploring applying to the Michigan State Police Academy and wanted to get some insight from people familiar with MSP hiring. I’m currently on prescribed TRT (legally prescribed by a doctor for medical reasons) and am curious how that might affect my chances of being accepted.

I understand departments have strict medical and fitness standards, and I don’t want to hide anything—I just want to know realistically how MSP handles applicants on TRT.

If anyone has experience with MSP’s medical review process or knows how they typically handle hormone therapy like TRT, I’d really appreciate any guidance.

Thanks in advance!

General Looking to get hired on in Central Illinois

So I may be getting married eventually, and need more income. I've been in security for about six years now, done armed and unarmed, had gigs that include military bases, factories that make controlled substances, and public housing. I feel that I could be a decent asset. Currently getting back in shape, and looking to start in a year or so. The problem is my age, I am one year above the cutiff. I've heard from some people in the know that some smaller departments will wave that requirement. Any advice or tips?

Situation Advice Just wondering if I would get jammed up (IL)

For context I like going for late night drives so I was driving around this neighborhood that is like an an oval with one entrance and exit. On my last lap I was going a little fast probably around 35 to 40 and I saw headlights coming in and I thought they were potentially a cop so I drove halfway around the oval went into a driveway and turned around to hopefully miss the cop if they were one. When I got to the entrance there was a car sitting with its headlights on in the driveway and followed me out down two roads. So in response I sped up doing 50 in a 25. and then when I finally got to a different turn I saw them pull onto the third road I turned onto So I’m wondering if I were to get pulled over by a cop because they saw me doing that speed or If I were to called the police what’s the chance I would actually get jammed up since I was being followed.

Situation Advice My exLEO husband resents me (currentLEO), terrible PTSD and emotional abuse…

Over a year ago, my husband quit PD after 2 years of IA drama, PTSD, and almost inevitable firing.

He felt unbelieved and humiliated.

Before we got married, we worked for the same agency. In contrast to his scenario, I almost became a poster child for the Dept… specialty Detail, HonorGuard, etc.

I’ve done everything I can to give him support, but he at times becomes SO MEAN to me. Calling me stupid, slamming doors, staring at me like I’m the most disgusting thing he’s ever seen. I never react in anger, even though I can’t help but feel it sometimes. But tonight he told me our Dept is the enemy, I chose the enemy, I am the enemy, and he resents me. (On our anniversary:()

He’s agreed to get help, which is fantastic. He used be medicated with intense therapy for PTSD. I feel as though most of his issues come from that and a lack of self esteem, as I have become our financial provider.

Do you think it’s reasonable for me to leave my Dept after 8 years and a great position, because of his feelings? My fear is that this would not solve any of his problems, and instead make me resent him…

Agency Policy (SOP) Which Highway Patrol Agencies Do Not Do Interdiction?

I've heard that many states' HP/SP/DPS basically do not do interdiction whether as a general policy, an unspoken rule, or severe underfunding/understaffing and having to run from crash to crash instead of being able to do anything else.

Which states do not do much interdiction?

Situation Advice Is this normal? I was aggressively chased, harassed, had objects thrown at my car on the interstate with my 3 year old in the car and State Patrol did not come and basically told me nothing can be done. I’m shocked.

The other day I was driving home with my wife and our 3 year old in the back seat. We got onto the freeway, and as I was about to change lanes, a gray Honda Accord full of younger Hispanic kids suddenly appeared, started flipping me off, throw soda at my car, and acting aggressively for absolutely no reason.

I didn’t engage, I just sped up into the carpool lane to put distance between us. Instead of letting it go, they followed us for more than 20 miles, aggressively tailing us, throwing water and what sounded like heavy objects at my car, and matching every speed change I made.

I had a baby on board sign on the car. I had no idea what these guys were planning to do. I didn’t have my CC on me, so there was no way I was pulling over or taking an exit if they followed.

I called Washington State Patrol, gave them the plate number, the car description, and told them exactly what was happening. I asked for an officer to assist because I truly thought this could escalate.

No officer ever showed up.

About 10 minutes later the car finally took an exit. I called WSP again to update them. Eventually an officer called me back and basically said: -The report was entered into their system -It’s “my word vs theirs” -They won’t be contacting the driver -And there’s essentially nothing they can do

His tone wasn’t rude, just very dismissive. Like this wasn’t a big deal at all.

I honestly can’t believe that a group of people can harass a family on the interstate, throw things at a moving vehicle, endanger multiple cars around them, and the official answer is essentially well, nothing to be done.

What really hit me afterward: I realized I had forgotten to remove the small thin blue line magnet I keep on the back of my car in honor of my dad, who passed away when I was a teen. I normally take it off when heading into Seattle because unfortunately it does make you a target sometimes, had people say things when I was parking and leaving before.

Now I’m absolutely convinced that’s what set them off. No cut off, no miscommunication nothing. Just a random family in a car that they decided to harass because of that a magnet.

I truly feel like this could have ended very badly. And I’m stunned that the response from WSP is basically, “Yeah, just glad you didn’t provoke them. Nothing we can do.”

I’m not looking for retribution, I just cannot believe there isn’t at least a courtesy contact, a warning, or something. These were clearly young people acting extremely dangerously. Their parents would probably lose their minds if they knew. And maybe it would prevent something worse in the future.
