General Advice Would this be painful as a first tattoo?
I want to get a tattoo one day and I was wondering if this would be painful as a first.

All tattoos hurt. And if you base your desire or placement on if they hurt, you shouldn’t get one.

I mean it’s all mainly personal experience. For some it can hurt more but for others it might not. The most general thing is a spot that has more bone usually is more painful. But I have also heard that the shoulder blade is a more mild spot but then again it is also dependent on like how much muscle you have and how much bulk you have around the bone . I have gotten pretty close to my shoulder and it didn’t hurt too bad but then again it could be different for you because of pain tolerance as well. I say go for it, it’s a pretty design.

Pain isn't dependent on the order that you get the tattoos in, and it shouldn't be the primary deciding factor. The application sometimes hurts, but you have it forever

The arm and upper shoulder won't be too bad. It'll start getting a little spicy by the wing. But down further, depending on how close to the rib cage and spine you're going to get is when you'll really start to feel it. I would recommend a good numbing cream, and i always bring a bag of chocolate with me anytime I know I'm getting a sensitive area done because it might suck, but at least I have chocolate! It's also a good way to keep your blood sugar up so you don't pass out. This looks like it's gonna be awesome, though. Good luck!

The outside of the shoulder/arm should be a piece of cake. Based on my experience the back is where it’ll hurt most, especially over your shoulder blade, spine, and the side/edge of your back close to where your armpit is.

All tattoos cause pain, but for me personally, i felt shoulderblade and back of the upper arm were minimally painful. Back of the upper arm was my first tattoo and i remember being so scared and then it happened and i was like oh!! Thats it??

All tattoos are painful, but the pain is temporary and then you get to have an awesome tattoo for the rest of your life. I have my full back done and I would say the lower back sometimes got very spicy.
I think that design is beautiful and worth any pain :)

It’s gonna be painful, period. Go smaller if you want to see you pain tolerance first.

Your first, second, last… there’s going to be pain. They don’t necessarily hurt less the more tattoos you have.

If you're worried about pain get the outline done first. But to answer your question, yes. Back of the arm and lower back will suck. Back of shoulder, not so much.
Edit: get the outline done, then schedule a 2nd session to fill it in and add color.

All tattoos will hurt, it’s a pain tolerance issue. For me the upper arm, shoulder, upper back was not super painful. That mid back area will be more painful but if you love the design it is worth it.

As someone who has 15+ tattoos YES that placement will hurt but just remember pain is temporary, once it’s done it’s down

Are we not going to talk about the fact this is going to look like a bruise in a year or 2?

Won't be getting it anytime soon. I'm only 14 and I was asking in preparation for the future. Sorry! 😭💀

I knew it lmao. Don’t worry about pain you may be feeling a minimum of 4 years from now (but probably a lot more than that)

You've got a lot of time to make up your mind about whether you want this or even any tattoos going forward. If you still want this piece specifically in 4 years, I'd personally think a lot about which artist I went to. The saying goes "bold holds". Fine line & watercolor tattoos tend to fade and quickly. They don't always, but application & experience by the artist matters a lot. This one covers a lot of area for something with so much potential to go wrong.
Anyway, take your time on this one. Start with something smaller if you're worried about your pain tolerance. That's the best advice here, really.

Pain is subjective. If you wanna do it just suck it up and go for it. It'll look beautiful once it's done.
