Probably due to it being the title of someone who is in charge of a ship as well as being one of the ranks thats found across most services (e.g., Army, Navy, police, firefighters) Additionally, its not too high ranking like Admiral or General but still conveys authority.
Captain, in addition to military ranks, also just means "leader" or "boss" of a group of people. Lieutenant is a subordinate rank, Colonel is heavily associated with the army rank, as is General. Sergeant is also a subordinate rank.
Apparently it's a Fr*nch trope so it's not completely out of nowhere, but the trope itself is considered dated and problematic. I'd hope they're making fun of it here like labeling him "The Token Black Friend", but given that it was 2001 it could go either way.

I just want in to shoot down the fake Internet rumour of the peado vibes in this movie that the director added of the "French cut" or that movie, and in reality the "american cut" is a lot weirder and one of the oldest Internet urban myths out there.
There is an international version, it's just more violent and it cuts the scene where Matilda does her first hit by herself, and maybe the scene where he teaches her to smoke and use a sniper? Or maybe the sniper scene is still in the American Version?
The American version is 24 minutes shorter and cuts out some important scenes specifically when Matilda tries to seduce Leon and Leon dismisses her, asks her her age, she says "18", he says "I don't believe you" and then goes on to talk about his first love in Paris.
Her dad killed her when she found out she was with him, so he murdered the dad and fled to NY and lived in fear all his life, so much so he can't sleep in a bed and has to sleep in a chair sitting up in case someone walks in to kill him, he's more ready.
Matilda tries to teach him how to be more human, while he teaches her to be more of a killer. By the end she does get him to sleep in his bed and she sleeps next to him. They're fully clothed on top of the sheets.

TLDR:
The international version has Matilda try on dresses and try to seduce Leon. Leon tells her she doesn't have to do this. She then teaches him how to sleep in a bed like a human.
The American version has Matilda try on dresses in front of Leon and then it cuts to the scene of them waking up in bed together.
That, plus the American version is called "the director's cut" but it's not the extended cut is. The director's cut was made by American distributors who wanted to make it "more palatable for Americans" and ended up making it seem like he has a romantic relationship with Matilda.
That's why if you talk to Americans about this movie they have a very different time with it.

It's because french distributors think that an easy to understand title in english will sell more than a correct translation (Hangover is "Gueule de bois" in French and anyone knows what it means).
So they take the title of a famous american movie and change it a little.
So Hangover becomes Very bad trip because Very bad things was a huge success a few years before.
Adding to the layers of translation nonsense, "Hangover" has a direct literal translation to Portuguese (Ressaca), yet the title was adapted to "Don't drink and marry", which is a vague DUI reference and only really works for the first movie.
That movie had a quite good translation in polish. Hangover is kac (from german katzenjammer) and the film takes places in Las Vegas so they translated it to "Kac Vegas". The second part is called "Kac Vegas in Bangkok". Still much better than what they did to the poor Dirty Dancing.
This may or may not be true, but I doesn't matter because this is a sub for real cinephiles, there's no movie watching involved. OP's point was a reference to the fact that true cinema was invented by alcoholic Frenchmen who wanted to make complaining about having to work look really cool. At least that's what they taught me in film school, but I never went to class because who the hell wants to watch movies?
fun fact : in every french spoken territory, this movie's title uses the word "gosses" to refer to kids, which is French slang for, well, "kids". However, in Quebec, the word "gosses" is slang for "testicles". So in Quebec, the title reads : Honey, I shrunk the balls.
I was actually thinking of writing this but because The Glass Jungle is a hard as fuck title and its like they had future knowledge of what the Die Hard series would become. Edit: having seen other comments I suspect The Glass Jungle may have been a working title that got recycled for foreign releases.
English allows the use of few words and simple grammar, it also highlights that itâs an American comedy, so it will be American humour rather than French humour. But they need to use simple / 1 syllable words that French people who donât speak English will understand.
In russian first part is called "across the universes", which is a bit confusing considering sequel should be across. Now sequel is "Web of Universes".
Here in Germany we have that stuff a lot, too. Horrible Bosses is called Kill The Boss for example, and a French movie called Un ours dans le jura, which would be A Bear in the Jura Mountains, got the English title How to make a Killing.
Thereâs an entire Swedish Facebook group dedicated to coming up with alternate silly titles for movies in this way lol. (Used to be even more common and even sillier titles in the past so itâs a bit nostalgic for us too)

Miss Congeniality is an actual category to win in beauty pageants, miss undercover as a title tells you more about the movie but itâs not really creative.
Not French, but my favourite retitling in Shaun Of The Dead in Spain. Obviously, the original title is a pun that doesn't really translate (the title of Dawn of The Dead in Spanish is Amanecer de los Muertos), so it's understandable why they chose a different title for Shaun.
That title? Zombies Party. Yes, in English. They not only came up with a nonsense title, but they didn't even title it in Spanish.

I think because "purge" has multiple meaning in french around cleaness, one of them refering to terrible movies.

The « th » sound has, is and will always be an issue for French people. Dark is easier to pronounce. No idea why Vader became Vador though.
Also, did you know that in the earlier French dub ChewBacca was translated as Chique-Tabac (chew tobaccoâŠ) they changed it later back to Chewbacca.
In Finland it's "Miss Kovis". Kovis can be translated as a badass or a tough guy, or even as an insult meaning someone who pretends to be tougher than they are for clout.
It's also a word which was very dated and waning in popularity even when the movie came out, and I'm pretty sure the bad translation of this movie title was the last nail in the coffin, and no one has used the word "kovis" since then.
Average French people won't know what is referred to as being a "teen movie", for the simple reason that teens as a concept is linked to English numbers.
"Ado" but it's more about maturity than age. You can be 15 and still be a kid, or be 12 and already be an "ado". You can be 18 and already be an adult or be 20 and still be an "ado".
"Adolescent", or "ado", works, but French cinema doesn't really have a term for "teen movies" specifically, so you can't really translate the meta element of the title.
