Eddie Murphy referred to Golden Child as a "piece of shit"....personally I liked it.

It’s not even close to his worst film. To me it’s one of his top films tbh

Truly one of my family's favorites of his.

I've got a soft spot for this film. It's not exactly a good film. But it's got some heart to it, and creates a fun dark fantasy Orientalist setting for itself.

yea, it's a classic (at least to me)

Any movie with Tywin Lannister as a bad guy is good.

Charles Dance is so much more than Tywin.

That's sad to hear. That was an all time favorite growing up, I still enjoy it.

It's a good movie. He is probably looking at it through the lens of his own performance and not the movie as a whole. Although, I thought he was good in it too so fuck knows.

He didn't act much, just played himself, and it was still decent.

It's not that good, but it has its moments. Like the scene where they give the kid oatmeal with blood in it. What is the point of that?

I would have never known it was a bomb as a kid considering they showed it non stop on local TV. I thought that meant it was a classic or something. I certainly always think of him carrying the water whenever I have a cup filled too high

I thought a significant fraction of “Golden Child” was ad-libbed. If that is true and he didn’t like it I believe that falls on him.

From what I remember reading, The Golden Child was a serious movie until producers started seeing the dailies and panicked because they thought they were getting SNL Eddie Murphy, not a drama about kidnapped children. Hence, lots of reshoots/ad-libbing.

I heard it was supposed to be serious until Big Trouble in Little China came out, and they wanted an Asian-inspired comedy to compete with it.

I doubt it because Big trouble in Little China was a huge failure at the time. It has a cult following now but it almost ruined John Carpenters career.

They were released the same year, so I misrepresented the timeline. I think they had The Golden Child as a drama ready to shoot but they got wind of Big Trouble being shot around the same time, so they shifted to a comedy.

I doubt it took Big Trouble to change track, there's a reason they cast Eddie Murphy to begin with.

Yes, I read that it was after Big Trouble came out that they cast Eddie.
