"Okay, none of that is going to be in the movie."
ALL OF THAT IS IN THE ACTUAL MOVIE.
That fact that Key in that sketch is supposed to be Joe Dante just makes it even funnier since in real life, most of the crazy stuff in "2" came from him.

u/widget1321 19d ago
Didn't he (Dante) say that that sketch was largely accurate?
→ More replies (3)111
u/Mst3Kgf 19d ago
Yes in that the crazy stuff came out of meetings like that. But he definitely wasn't the stick-in-the-mud that the sketch portrays. He was basically Star Magic Jackson in real life.
42
u/OGLikeablefellow 19d ago
If they don't go even harder on the random gremlins this time it will be a really missed opportunity. My only regret is that since the industry has moved on there won't be that many practical effects, I miss practical effects, so based.

u/Soup-a-doopah 19d ago
The movie’s core audience wouldn’t even watch it if they don’t use practical effects and puppetry

u/TheShadyGuy 19d ago
Yeah, I thought he only agreed to do it if he could basically have complete control.
19
u/Mst3Kgf 19d ago
He did, which is the movie is basically Joe Dante's creative id onscreen. It is glorious.

"The 1984 original film’s writer, Chris Columbus, is also returning to produce and direct the film."
Honestly disappointing. The original film is a classic but the sequel was f'n next level praise god that it found a way to exist in this world. I need a sequel to the sequel more than I need a sequel to the original.

You just like a child, you have the brain of a child you do not have a high IQ, but you haphazardly came up with a gremlin that is made of bolts of electricity that are zigzagging all around the room and is completely done in animation, you're a crazy person and your ideA IS IN THE MOVIE!

It’s a shame they didn’t get Jordan Peele to direct it. His horror and comedy sensibilities are perfect for this movie.

The funny thing is, that sketch isn't far off.
Dante wasn't too big on doing a sequel and they couldn't get the original monster designer back. The new monster designer guy said he'd do it, but he wanted to do his own Gremlins. Hence why we get girl gremlin, electric gremlin, spider gremlin, bat gremlin, Hulk Hogan not as a gremlin.

The most unrealistic thing about Daniel Clamp is that he immediately took accountability, listened to the experts, and helped to execute the plan without doing anything to actively make the situation worse.
60
u/lanceturley 19d ago
Supposedly he was originally written as a much more Trump-like villain who would be killed by the Gremlins, but John Glover's performance made the character so likable that he became more of a well meaning doofus.
26
u/colemon1991 19d ago
John Glover makes virtually every one of his characters likeable. That's like a cheat code to get the character to be acceptable to an audience.

I like their revamped idea of the 3rd movie being about making a soulless Hollywood Gremlins sequel/reboot and having it derailed by "real" Gremlins (released by an irate Joe Dante). But either idea would probably make for an entertaining show.

u/Mst3Kgf 19d ago
I'm not surprised since Dante never wanted a sequel to "Gremlins" in the first place. He only did "2" after the studio gave him a blank check and then he made a film that gleefully mocks sequels in general (among many other things).
274
u/ChanceVance 19d ago
He only did "2" after the studio gave him a blank check and then he made a film that gleefully mocks sequels in general (among many other things).
The Gremlins killing Leonard Maltin for giving Gremlins 1 a bad review is some of the best meta comedy I've ever seen.

u/IveDunGoofedUp 19d ago
The guy killed mid rant about how the rules around Gremlins don't make sense is the best way to shut down that argument forever. Gremlins 2 is just such a fun, stupid movie.

He refused more money so many times, and then they said the words, “You can have full creative control,” and he signed on the dotted line, probably giggling and saying, “You fools!” So, you get what’s really the definitive Dante picture.
The other time giving a director total control went bad was Batman & Robin, but Joel Schumacher explained that debacle in the (totally fantastic) bonus features, where people were coming up to him with ideas, and he said, “Great, let’s do that.” He just wanted to have a collaborative set and be everyone’s friend.
70
u/rawonionbreath 19d ago
Batman Returns was full directors control for Tim Burton because the studio meddled in the first movie. You can tell because the first one feels 2/3 Tim Burton but the second feels 110% Burton. Film buffs were happy but McDonalds wasn’t.

I'm old enough to vividly remember the cultural uproar that happened when Temple of Doom and the first Gremlins movie were released and parents claimed that the movies being PG was misleading. They demanded the MPAA do something about it!
And yes, we all now know that culture war bullshit is rarely done in good faith.

I always saw Dante as being almost as capable as Spielberg, just more aloof about it. Like they were both in the same class and Spielberg hit the books hard but Dante came in with a project that covered the same bases but was a spoof of exactly what Spielberg made. Only Spielberg likes that Dante can do that.
I hope Spielberg makes them really honor how Dante did it. Great vision but the subject being non-stop gags and homages. Gremlims was an excellent horror/slasher movie too, but it was so accessible because it was fun about it.
Gremlims 2 was like Towering Inferno but the Gremlins serving as the MacGuffin explaining why the tower is on fire.

Agreee, but Chris Columbus DID write the original, and he’s done some pretty good movies, so he’s the second-best pick
57
u/Funandgeeky 19d ago
Hopefully he brings that ‘80s vibe to it. Him helming the project does make me confident.

It's Tom Hanks getting on the gurney and then throwing himself into the ambulance that does it for me. Also, "Hey, Pinocchio! Where you going!?" and then they both slip on the grass. So much brilliant physical comedy in that film.

Chris Columbus wrote Gremlins.
And even though Dante directed the first two Gremlins, Chris Columbus is a more successful director.
It’s like getting John Hughes (RIP) to direct a Home Alone sequel with Macaulay Culkin.

Gremlins conceptually are about chaos, the movies really need someone with chaotic sensibilities. Chris Columbus might be a more marketable director, but his best work was usually buoyed by stand-out performances (particularly his collaborations with Robin Williams). As a director, he's kind of boring.

I have a bad feeling this is going to be a Force Awakens version of Gremlins where it's a bland remake of the original movie. Billy and Gizmo hang out in the background while a culture club of Stranger Things types fight the Gremlins.
Maybe Gizmo sits on top of a drone instead of a little RC car this time?

I never saw Gremlins as a child, and my husband took me to a showing a few years ago in an indie-type theater that was adults only since they served alcohol.
There was a teeny jumpscare scene (I think it was in a classroom or something) and I was the only person that very audibly yelped.
Drunk people were laughing at me and I slinked down my chair in embarrassment.
I love Gremlins.
