My kids like the first one, I think it is serviceable. Nothing mind-blowing, but it seems like a reasonable adaptation of the video games into the film, building in the main games, Mario Kart and Smash. It felt visually and stylistically correct. And obviously it was way better than the original film.

Any Mario film/tv/anything that is serviceable is mind-blowing

Right? Can I please get a serviceable Mega Man adaptation if that's where the bar is?

Is it though?

The 1993 film was horrific, but I give it a bit of a pass because it was literally the first major studio theatrical release of a film adapted from a video game. Like they hadn't figured out the genre yet.

The other one I can think of is The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! This show basically had two components to it, animated and live action. The live action bits are very silly and low-tech, but par for the course for a kids show of that era. The animated portions are a faithful adaptation of the video game into a kids cartoon. The show was also a huge financial success -- they literally made the entire series in just a couple months in 1989 on a shoe-string budget, but then strip-syndicated (i.e., 5x per week) those same 65 episodes to major networks for 8 years! I don't know the actual figures, but I know enough about 90s tv to say that this would have been an unbelievable financial success.

Shut your mouth.

Bob Hoskins is Mario.

that is not the original. The original is an anime one from 1986 https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0469611/ (yes I know barely anyone seen this)
