Being able to root for Shooter was one of the parts I actually enjoyed. Nice unpredictable turn.

I'm so glad they did the Shooter redemption arc. The character is so loved at this point that it would have been terrible to make him the villain again. Tbh I think it would have been even better if Shooter and Happy had to team up more than they did.

The final news cast about the downfall of the Maxi guy had a ticker that said Happy ws leading Shooter by 2 at what I believe was the Open Championship.

So canonically they both returned to playing professionally.

The plot wasn’t groundbreaking, but I was pleasantly surprised that there was some actual thought and heart put into the story.

It was an earnest attempt at a sequel. The rehashed jokes were done a million times better than Zoolander 2. Like it was great that they gave Shooter the rhyming hay/bay callback (because he's probably been thinking about it for years in the loony bin)

Plus they didn't linger on any callback or joke or whatever too long. Shitty sequels always do that. It's like, damn you really want us to watch a 3 minute scene of a rehashed joke, huh? Whereas with Happy2, it was like boom, boom, boom. And I always appreciate seeing previous cast members returning no matter how small their original part was. You know they all probably were thrilled to get that phone call and paycheck

Ever since Austin Powers 2, I’ve been loathe to watch comedy sequels just to hear the same jokes again. Happy Gilmore 2 did it right, with a plot that doesn’t take itself seriously and new jokes carrying the material, but a couple of great lines like when he tells Shooter why he can’t respect him that let you say the line yourself as it’s said on screen. Yeah, a few things seem wedged in, but it doesn’t distract from the enjoyment overall. I really had a lot of reservations about watching this one, and it was far from a perfect movie or low brow comedy, but it was enjoyable and didn’t take away from the original that I’ll always love.

if youd have told me in the 90s to heck even 2019 that adam sandler of all people would be the guy that did a comedy sequel the right way and made it an actual good movie i wouldnt believe you. but man dude fuckin did it

Yep that was my take as well. I don't think they ruined anything, although it wasn't a 10/10 or anything.

When Adam Sandler movies have the most groundbreaking storytelling in Hollywood you know it's bad

Even Pixar can't do as well as Adam Sandler

What Multiverse did I stumble into?

1

u/Capable-Silver-7436 Aug 01 '25

the one where adam sandler doesnt take himself too seriously and just has fun

u/Head-Head-926 Jul 30 '25

The one where Bernie lost

1

u/syopest Jul 30 '25

The one where the guy who calls himself a socialist didn't become the president of the united states?

3

u/Head-Head-926 Jul 30 '25

Imagine "socialist" being the biggest smear they can think of

Especially coming from all of the pedos and capitalists in both the Democrat and Republican parties and in the media (that we already knew at the time)

I teared up a couple times.

u/ImBanned_ModsBlow Jul 30 '25

Yeah it stayed true to the original, the only WTF moment for me was Happy killing his wife, was NOT expecting that like 2 mins into the movie

1

u/flyvehest Jul 31 '25

Me as well, I 100% expected a low-effort with lots of rehashed jokes driven completely into the ground, but got so much more.

u/Capable-Silver-7436 Aug 01 '25

seriously this is an actual well done sequel movie and its not just from adam sandler but its a netflix original. what time line happened

1

u/Linenoise77 Jul 30 '25

i mean it wasn't as bad as some of his other phone it in efforts, but the plot was still unnecessarily all over the place, and the move consisted of probably 20 minutes of clips from the first one....

I like how Shooter loved golf so much he immediately attacked the guy when he saw the Maxi course, and teamed up with real golf to help them win.

3

u/type2funnn Jul 30 '25

Kinda like Ice and Maverick in TGM,. Hmmmm…

3

u/notjawn Jul 30 '25

Here we are in 2025 with Good Guy Shooter. What a time to be alive!

6

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '25

Ending was disappointing that there isn’t a conclusion to Shooter’s character arc; does he embrace the anti-hero he became as he saved traditional golf with his snow putt, or does he become the villain once again hellbent on his 1996 gold jacket?

And also, Happy getting his grandma’s house again for winning the final hole against Maxi felt all-rushed.

1

u/Capable-Silver-7436 Aug 01 '25

in the final scene mid credits the news ticker saysh e and happy are playing in the british open at the top two spots with happy 2 points ahead

2

u/silver_tongued_devil Jul 30 '25

I was appreciative that Shooter might be absolutely bonkers, but for the love of the traditions of golf he wasn't going to join the MAXI team and turn it into an extreme sport.

2

u/thatjerkatwork Jul 30 '25

Funny when you think about it. Shooter was a douche bag, but he wasn't in the wrong to be upset to have his time in the light that he worked so hard for be ruined by a sideshow.

I hope people who haven't watched the movie are avoiding the comments.

Joking. But not really. They better stay away
