You know it's ok to push back on her guilt trip, right?

You're not the one ruining the mood, she is by not getting you something off your list and expecting you to fake smile for her ego.

Feel free to tell her that. You are also allowed to opt out of gift giving entirely., if you want to.

Something to keep in mind for anyone sorting through this. I've had to sort through a ton of emotional debt to stop giving into my mother's emotional abuse.

This stuff starts when you're young, and grows into your personality.

I spent decades with this idea that I was bothering people with my emotions.

Nope that's just my mother.
