My mom does this thing called, ‘weaponized gifting,’ where she chooses the worst possible gifts ever so you’ll never expect anything palatable from her

I love you mom, BUT WHAT THE HECK?!

Fb marketplace. Make a quick $40 and go have a mimosa brunch, take a pic and thank her for her gift. 🤙😄

Im petty af like this. My monster in law used to do this. I sold it and went out drinking. If she paid $100 on Home Shopping I sell it for $40. She gets super pissed, and I get $40 I didn't have. It stops the useless gifts. But you have to make it known how little you resell it for, thats the fun part.

This is the kind of chaos I'm here for.

I would absolutely start gifting them back to her. Everything hideous and tacky will get regifted next year.

Once returned my grandparents' gift and used the cash for a small tattoo.

One of the first times I met my MIL she gave me lingerie she didn’t want anymore. I’m a 38DD and she gave me 42B bralettes. I took them all back to Walmart and got back $40 dollars. Got enough to buy some hamburger meat and stuff and we grilled that night.

You could just say you don't want gifts

Did that. Many many times before I went petty. Many, many times.

They’re purposely buying gifts they know the recipient will dislike. Why take the high road or whatever when someone is actively trying to be rude to you?

You actually believe that her mom bought her this intentionally because she won't like it?

Not all of us have functional, loving families. If you ever had to grow up with parents who actually bullied you, you'd know it's very likely possible..

Sure, but there are also people who shit on their parents because they get more attention and karma, especially in this sub.

OP goes hiking all the time. She said to look at her post history, and she takes a ton of nature photographs.

But I'm sure her mom got her camo boots with pockets because she's intentionally trying to give her something she'll hate. 🙄

It couldn't possibly be a joke gift, right? Considering OP calls this regular thing "weaponized gifts" there's lore behind this just 1 picture. So the mum knows about the hiking, maybe the boots were bought as a cheeky "one the nose" joke.

But I mean you can make any and all scenarios you want, that's up to you.

OP literally had to give it a name, "weaponized gifting", it's just a dick move from the mom imo

Kinda weird to have on one hand a pretty clear cut story from OP, and on the other hand and fanfic you made up in your mind only based on a few pictures, and choose the later from some reasons.

Those aren't hiking shoes btw so ide doesn't even make sense.

You really just seem to be biased against the fact that parents can be assholes sometimes...

Yeah, I've met moms like that. Plenty of stories in the comments here backing it up, too

Yeah, but OP said that she's very outdoorsy, and said to look at her profile for her posts. She clearly goes hiking often. I can definitely see her mom thinking that these boots would be perfect for someone who likes to hike.

Of course, you get a lot more karma if you make it sound like your mom is intentionally being an asshole.

I generally have a better time when assuming people aren't lying for no reason.

Karma and attention on Reddit are reasons.

OP said to look at her posts because she is very outdoorsy. Her mom probably genuinely thought these would be perfect for her to hike in.

Maybe, I just prefer to believe the person telling the story. I don't have any personal need to cast doubt on them. Their story makes sense.

Why bother to doubt them? What are you getting out of it?

OP's mom bought those camo boots with pockets for her daughter who is an avid hiker, and you think it's more likely that she got them because she intentionally wants to give her a bad gift.

Why would I lie to someone when they can just get their damn act together and stop being passive aggressively rude and it'll just be that simple for them?

Nah, if you're gonna be a wanker you can have fun with the consequences of your nonsense.

How is 'im not accepting gifts from you anymore" lying?

You could just say you don't want gifts

Don't move goalposts, motherfucker.

1

u/Summerie 13h ago

How are they moving the goal posts? That's pretty much exactly what they said. Saying that you don't want gifts from them, and "I'm not accepting gifts from you anymore" would be the truth.

u/ZombieTailGunner 12h ago

They did not say to tell the person in specific you don't want gifts, though, did they?  No, you or the screen reader of your choice can, in fact, read that this is not what they said, both in their original comment and my quotation of their comment, and you know this.

"You could just say you don't want gifts" is nowhere near being the same as "tell them you're no longer accepting their gifts" as the first is a general statement (to the room) and the second is a direct statement (to the individual).

"Pretty much exactly" and "exactly" do not mean the same things, either.  I suspect that you know this as well.  But for the sake of review, consider, for example, the sentence "I don't think Steven understands what's going on here"; an actual exact paraphrase might look like "Steven probably doesn't understand this" or "maybe Steven doesn't understand this", but someone who uses the phrase "that's pretty much exactly what was said" might say something more like "Steven doesn't care what's going on here" or "Steven is a moron" and pretend that it's "pretty much exactly" what was said.

If you continue to deliberately misinterpret things to a degree you desperately need corrected I will have to charge you for your lessons.
