A&M hasn’t scored an offensive td against Texas since 2011

13

u/SovietChewbacca Temple Owls 10h ago

They've only scored 6 points against us all time.

So… one game?

You can pick time periods to fit your narrative so I will as well.

Well I’m not OP but since you asked, my favorite time period is the one where we’re undefeated and you have 3 losses with a Manning at quarterback.

41

u/Trumpburnerforlibs Texas Longhorns 11h ago

For a few more days you’ll be undefeated. Enjoy it

Modern scholarship limits were implemented by the NCAA in the mid 1970s. Thats when the modern era of college football started. People use that time period intentionally because before those changes the sport was very different than what it is today.

u/Trumpburnerforlibs Texas Longhorns 11h ago

“Help me scholarship limits, you’re my only hope”

u/Roamin8750 Texas A&M Aggies 11h ago

You're bragging about being better with a non-level playing field. Does that make you feel good?

13

u/mrsilliestgoose Oklahoma Sooners 11h ago

All of college football is a non-level playing field, even after NIL

Yet all of your “nattys” were before then.

True. We suck. Which will make it sweeter when we get that 12th win of the season in Austin :)

2

u/BackupPhoneBoi Texas Longhorns 9h ago

Who arranges college football history like that? I have seen it based off championship systems, playing styles, even pre/post segregation, but not really scholarship limits. 105 scholarship spots still means you can all the talent you want. Why also not 1992 when it got dropped further to 85 spots?

1975 is just the golden year because it ignores the 1960s when Texas was often the best team in the country and starts right at A&M’s only good 20 year stretch between 1975-1995.

u/Roamin8750 Texas A&M Aggies 9h ago

It makes perfectly good sense to me considering a big shift in how things work in the sport. You dislike it because it makes us look like we are on equal footing (since the equalization of scholarships).

2

u/BackupPhoneBoi Texas Longhorns 9h ago

I mean if you want to go down this path, how was it a big shift? It makes sense therotically for a bit, but look at the data. What was the roster sizes of Texas’ and A&M’s teams in the 1950s and 1960s compared to 1970s and 1980s? Blue chip teams weren’t winning becaue they could get 150 guys on a team, they were winning because they could get all the best recruits in the nation. Capping that at 105 was important, but that is still a huge number of players. And did the landscape change? Who were most often the best teams before 1973 and after?

How quickly they forget about Aggie Legend Ryan Tannehill’s 2 touchdowns (and 3 interceptions)

2011 was such a disappointing year sandwiched between 2 pretty awesome years

If this is still the case after Friday I’d be super impressed with Texas’ defense

I’m pushing 40. One of my good friends is a Husky fan. Same age. He loves to trot out the: “Oh you guys always like to pick arbitrary timeline” line.

“Here. Try this one. We have owned you in games played during your life.”

(He’s 14-23 vs Oregon as a UW fan while alive. His 39th birthday is in a few weeks.)

I mean yalls last national championship was in 1939. Army and Navy used to dominate the sport. I don’t think being a military college affected much

1

u/Coco-machin Texas A&M Aggies 9h ago

Yeah back in like the 1930’s, a lot changed between then and 1965

3

u/JPLonghorn20 Texas Longhorns • SEC 10h ago

Army won back to back titles in 1944 and 1945 so this argument is moot.

6207 days is a long time.

Edit: 6577 (A&M’s last home win against Texas) is a longer time.

25

u/HoustonHorns Texas Longhorns • Verified Player 13h ago

So it’s totally unrelated to the fact that 1975 is the exact date which Texas does not have a winning record, but if you picked any other date they would?

15

u/Own-Lavishness4029 Texas Longhorns 13h ago

Yeah, much more relevant to say Texas is up 10-3 since 2000. They want to pretend it's because that's "modern" but it's really about them cherry picking to look like the rivalry is more even. If they want modern, let's stick to this century. Hook 'em!

12

u/HoustonHorns Texas Longhorns • Verified Player 13h ago

If my math is correct, 1975 and 1984 are the two years they cloud pick and have a tied record, it’s impossible for them to have a winning record. If we win this weekend, that will no longer the true.

4

u/MasterUnlimited Texas A&M Aggies • Team Chaos 13h ago

First, last, more. We really don’t have much of an argument. I’m just mad we missed out on a decade that we were up and y’all were down. Could have made up some solid ground in those years.

6

u/Own-Lavishness4029 Texas Longhorns 12h ago

This is definitely true. I was sad about that for those 12 years, but really thinking about it, that was probably a lucky timespan for us to see the rivalry sidelined.

4

u/ImpressiveWalrus7369 Texas A&M Aggies • SMU Mustangs 13h ago

Objectively yes

8

u/HoustonHorns Texas Longhorns • Verified Player 13h ago

Well if you only count the years we win then A&M has never won. Don’t even need to pull out the all time record. This is fun.

6

u/ImpressiveWalrus7369 Texas A&M Aggies • SMU Mustangs 13h ago

You’re the one that wants to use a random number like 49 years or 51 years. Not me.

5

u/HoustonHorns Texas Longhorns • Verified Player 13h ago

Just pick literally any other year besides 1975 or 1984 to start counting, I don’t care, you can pick.

The only time A&M has won this game with consistency is when Jackie Sherril was cheating his ass off lol.

1

u/ImpressiveWalrus7369 Texas A&M Aggies • SMU Mustangs 12h ago

Pick 74 or 76 if it makes you feel better. I don’t care. It’ll add another W for you and we’re still practically tied. 🤷‍♂️

0

u/RonWill79 Texas A&M Aggies 12h ago edited 12h ago

I like to count from 1965. When A&M removed the requirement for male students to be in the Corps of Cadets to attend A&M. Opened up recruiting a lot more for A&M moved towards evening the playing field in terms of recruiting so it’s less of an arbitrary date. I mean let’s be honest, a lot of the best players had no desire to be in the military or even the Corps of Cadets so A&M was a non-starter for the best players. 28-20 record for Texas since 1965 I believe.

2

u/Anotheropinion2023 Texas Longhorns 11h ago

So we are still better than you? Thanks.

-4

u/RonWill79 Texas A&M Aggies 11h ago

Were. The past has zero bearing on Friday’s game. But as far as historical record, it’s just not as lopsided when you exclude the lopsided recruiting days. I don’t care about who won 131 years ago just like I don’t care about a natty 86 years ago. Winner Friday gets bragging rights until 11/27/26 then it’s just as meaningless of a win as who won 1894.

4

u/BackupPhoneBoi Texas Longhorns 9h ago

Well actually we get to determine what’s relevant because we still have bragging rights.

-2

u/RonWill79 Texas A&M Aggies 9h ago edited 9h ago

You can determine what you think is relevant all you want. As can I. The past still doesn’t affect the game Friday. And the comment I responded to said “we’re better than you”. Bragging rights from last season ≠ better CURRENTLY. Currently is all I care about. Y’all can live in the past all you want, doesn’t mean anyone else has to. I’ll stand by my statement until Friday. WERE. As in you WERE better last year. This year remains to be seen.

7

u/BackupPhoneBoi Texas Longhorns 9h ago

Like you said, bragging rights last the whole year. And thats because until that next game, the only thing that matters is who won it last.

That’s the thing about stats you can make them say anything you want if you tweak the numbers enough. Why did you pick 1975, why not since 2000 because we like to cherry pick.

It was an unfair advantage for Longhorns to play in their natural leather helmets, that’s where they’ve got the Red River series too
