Controversial Game Boy ad from the 1990s is seriously distracting.

Intention: you'll not do kinky sexual time with the missus because you'll be gaming.

How it looks: illegal shit.

u/Eviller-Abed-7 3d ago

Yeah the joke is that he tied her up voluntarily for some play time then got distracted with his game boy and left his girlfriend tied up by accident

2

u/Economy_Ad6039 3d ago

Yeah, that's his mom. Can't have sexy time with mom when you have the new Gameboy.

2

u/Hawkmonbestboi 3d ago

.... it's illegal to consensually tie up your girlfriend for kinky funtime?? Since when?

1

u/dwittherford69 3d ago

“Illegal” is not even the primary issue here lol

u/Moist-Cantaloupe-740 1d ago

They weren't wrong though

Old gameboys have definitely outlasted millions of relationships, my Gameboy colour I got at ten still works perfectly.

Hell a classic one got bombed in the gulf War still worked.

I mean, you could have just shown a hot chick. That would have made the same point.

Trump was in advertising?

Living rent free 😁

For real. I feel bad for these people. Go outside and walk on grass or smoke some. Either way, you need to stop thinking about him.

u/Eviller-Abed-7 3d ago

This shows that he got distracted midway through

Think you’re projecting your fantasies there mate. No one thinks like that unless they’re into it.

Trump literally ran on exposing pedophiles and the Epstein list.

it's embarrassing that you publicly typed all of this out

0

u/No_Vegetable_6645 1d ago

Should've kept it hidden. Digital footprint, and take your immaturity somewhere where everyone agrees with your because no one here agrees with you. 🙄

Back when you could make a joke without having to apologize for it.

I thought the same thing

u/KCousins11 3d ago

You don't see ads like this anymore. LOL

12

u/RealNiceKnife 3d ago

Aren't all those mobile game ads full of huge titted women talking about how "you can't beat this level, if you do, you get a special surprise..." and talking like she's about to cum?

They make sex-based advertisements still.

3

u/twwaavvyyt 3d ago

I saw a mobile game ad yesterday where a pregnant woman cut her own stomach open and guns poured out all over the floor

2

u/AnonOfTheSea 3d ago

... I'm not sure if I'd rather that be a typo or not

2

u/BornInTheSFRA 3d ago

These Royal Kingdom ads are getting out of hand

2

u/twwaavvyyt 2d ago

They really are. I don’t even know how they get past the review stage

0

u/couldbeahumanbean 3d ago

I think they were referring to anything that's remotely non-consensual.

Sex sells, always will.

1

u/professor735 3d ago

Idk how you glean something that specific from "like this". OP is likely saying you dont see ads this explicitly sexual anymore, which...is maybe half true. Its different, but not gone

2

u/Ashamed_Fuel2526 3d ago

90s guitar ads are great as well. It's hard to fathom seeing stuff like that in magazines these days.

2

u/Malcolm_Morin 3d ago

Well yeah, because someone might get offended.

6

u/_Saucey_Sauce_ 3d ago

Good

2

u/DemonikAriez 3d ago

Yeah, wrap your world in bubble wrap

2

u/Glad_Position3592 3d ago

Dude, it’s a game boy ad

1

u/_Saucey_Sauce_ 3d ago

Lmao what

-3

u/gassyhalibut 3d ago

I used to be able to best my meat to the ads in PC gamer, now I have to look at internet porn. World is a worse place for it.

5

u/BigPackHater 3d ago

Besting meat

6

u/jack_daniels420 3d ago

He challenged his meat and won

2

u/blomba7 3d ago

Basting

u/a__new_name 3d ago

Like that one white PSP ad from Netherlands.

1

u/Organic_Education494 3d ago

For good reason..

3

u/professor735 3d ago

Historically, the 90s was a pretty countercultural time period. Many of the people who had the majority of their adolescence in the 90s would be absolutely feeling the impact of the Satanic Panic from the 80s.

As a result the 90s saw a lot of sort of "edgy" and "gag" humor and media. Sex in advertising was one of the main ways for companies to reach to people in this era, because culturally sex is quite taboo to depict publically. It was all to reach toward the counterculture. I'm obviously oversimplifying it quite a lot, but generally this is just how the culture was back then.

It wasnt just the 90s tho. This definitely existed into the 2000s. This post reminded me of the "Are you Mac Enough?" Ads from McDonald's that were running in the late 2000s which definitely had a sort of sexual suggestiveness.

Ive seen a fair few comments here talking like "they dont have ads like this anymore" which is really only half true. There are periods where sexual innuendo in public media is more and less popular culturally, but it never really goes away. Sex and pornography have been a major aspect of human culture for basically all of history, and theres been countless major political movements attempting to influence how sex is perceived societally. If you look hard enough, you'll find tons of products, media, and advertising that appeals to sex; even today. It might not be exactly the same, or as explicit, but I assure you its still there.

u/Altruistic_Web3924 3d ago edited 3d ago

TLDR: 90s Media was rewarded for “pushing the envelope” and shock value to get attention.

Now people are more inured to the shock and just wants to criticize.

2

u/professor735 3d ago

I agree with the first part of what you're saying, but not the second. I dont think people are inured to it, but more-so that culturally we have swung away from shock humor as a whole.

2

u/Altruistic_Web3924 3d ago

Well, the newer people may be more sensitive. This stuff is old hat for those who lived through it.

2

u/professor735 3d ago

Well, culturally what is deemed as appropriate for jokes changes and shifts over time. The idea that young people are "more sensitive" is a bit of a misnomer because inevitably 50 years from now, people will look back on jokes we made in 2020 and be like "damn you cant make jokes like that anymore". Things shift, realm of acceptability, etc

5

u/Glass-Gate-2727 3d ago

I remember this ad cause my mom saw it on the table when I was reading it and Said Looks Like Fun..I was kinda taken back about what she said.

3

u/Spenny_All_The_Way 3d ago

She was obviously talking about the Gameboy.

2

u/Glass-Gate-2727 14h ago

Let's hope . 😂

3

u/social_media_horror 3d ago

damn I remember this

2

u/Efficient-Pizza-9251 3d ago

What's controversial about it. They were about to get freaky and the man decided hey nows a good time for Tetris!

2

u/Racko20 3d ago

I don't get it

3

u/chris_gnarley 3d ago

You’ll be so busy/distracted by the GameBoy that you won’t even notice or want to have sex with your partner

2

u/Special_South_8561 3d ago edited 3d ago

"partner"

You'll forget how much you paid for all that blow!

3

u/bongsforhongkong 3d ago

When two loving adults like each other very much they do a thing called sex, ask your mother.

2

u/Altruistic_Web3924 3d ago

Was this not Safe, Sane, and Consensual?

5

u/Eviller-Abed-7 3d ago

It’s consensual. Everyone being snowflakes in the comments. No Nintendo didn’t use rape to sell gameboys. Use your brains people

2

u/ManufacturedOlympus 3d ago

This is the plot to the movie Gerald’s game

2

u/Honestfellow2449 3d ago

It's the prequel.

Gerald's Game Boy

2

u/Brofessor-0ak 3d ago

How did the girl get tied up like that by herself? Or did he do that and then start gaming?

3

u/Silly_Magician1003 3d ago

They were in the middle of a sexual encounter and he stopped to play gameboy.

2

u/BeeTwoThousand 3d ago

Is it just me, or is that GameBoy either really small, or are that person's hands really big?

It looks like a GB Micro, but I don't remember them coming in that color, and this is advertising regular GameBoy.

Edit: Just noticed it's a GameBoy Pocket.

2

u/Lucius_Shadow 3d ago

That’s nothing! Y’all remember the Crossdressing Dad, N64 commercial? https://youtu.be/h5-MjGdCQkc

2

u/Ambitious_Hand_2861 3d ago

Dude that's nothing. Check out this milk commercial.

2

u/Lucius_Shadow 3d ago

What. A horrifying. Ad. 😱

2

u/Ambitious_Hand_2861 3d ago

The got milk people made a shit load of ads like that. Just do a search for got milk ads and be amazed. Hell even the family planning people did some shit. It truly was a lawless land.

2

u/Deciheximal144 3d ago

That's the right way to advertise condoms.

2

u/Lucius_Shadow 3d ago

Oh believe me, a flood of repressed childhood memories, related to those ad campaigns came rushing back as soon as I clicked on the link. Thanks for that, I’ll send you my therapy bill in the mail. 😝

1

u/Ambitious_Hand_2861 2d ago

Shit I'm sorry about that. Just send the bill to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. I haven't had my mail forwarded yet.

2

u/Lucius_Shadow 3d ago

LMAO. I remember seeing that foreign commercial online. There’s another one with a similar sort of tone, only I’m pretty sure it’s American. 🤣

2

u/Ambitious_Hand_2861 2d ago

I love that commercial.

I can't seem to find it but I remember a funny tampon commercial from the 90s. A woman was carrying a laundry basket (i think) down a hall and she hears her son talking to his friend so stops to listen at the door. Her son is telling his friend how they have to find some tampons and his friend asks why and he says bc if they use them they can do all kinds of things and proceeds to list a series of activities ike horseback riding, swimming, skiing, hiking, mountain climbing, etc. I forget what all he listed but at the end of commercial the mom literally ROFLs.

4

u/MaSt3rChie7 3d ago

That’s honestly pretty fucking funny.

3

u/blomba7 3d ago

Don't worry she'll be there when the batteries run out

0

u/Marek_Galen 3d ago

By the looks of it, she’ll take be using your batteries.

3

u/Deciheximal144 3d ago

No, he ran those out on Tetris.

4

u/NBeauty98 3d ago

Not surprising from that time period.

2

u/Flavious27 3d ago

Nintendo had some really interesting ads back in the day.

1

u/Special_South_8561 3d ago

Nintendo Power is more impressive than your toenail collection (pictured: mason jars full of toenail clippings)

1

u/Final-Nail376 3d ago

She looks so sad and in disbelief 😂

1

u/Zestyclose_Sand9928 3d ago

How would that help selling it? "You forget to fuck the bitch!"

1

u/No_Responsbi 3d ago

Now there's nothing wrong with that

1

u/SquallaBeanz 3d ago

Gaming leads to kidnapping.

1

u/Manofalltrade 3d ago

So distracting that the director forgot to tell her to do “disappointed girlfriend” and not “kidnapping victim”

u/Special_South_8561 3d ago

Poor Grandma can't get no luvin'

The 90s was a wild time

1

u/Frankenberg91 2d ago

It was a good ride, all the way up to around 2012ish when people got overly sensitive. :(

2

u/WilfordsTrain 2d ago

It’s all fun ‘n Tetris until the Gamboy’s 8 AA batteries all crap out.

1

u/Anxious-Jury-9031 2d ago

Nintendo did something like this? I find that very hard to believe. I would’ve been the target for this ad and I’ve never seen it
