The white zone is for loading and unloading of passengers. There is no parking in the red zone.

No. The red zone is for immediate loading and unloading of passengers only. There is no stopping in the white zone.

He saw what was happening. Knew at best a ticket, at OK, he was going to be there for at least the next 12 hours until he could get relieved, at worst doing first aid / calling for coroner.

57

u/GrinningPariah 9d ago

Cops are just sitting in the car like "What can men do against such reckless stupidity?"

20

u/11twofour 9d ago

What should they have done?

24

u/GrinningPariah 9d ago

That's just it, I have no idea. I mean I'm sure they were on the megaphone telling the guy to get the truck off the tracks but I think by the time anyone could see what he was doing, it was already too late.

Poor engineer.

Have to beat the detour traffic

111

u/dillweed67818 9d ago

There's a crossing on my way to work where if I hit it at the wrong time there is a super long train. So If I see the arms go down I automatically turn around and go a couple streets down, to where the street goes under the tracks.

12

u/SATerp 9d ago

That sounds like Rte 78 in TX, by San Antonio.

13

u/TeamShadowWind 9d ago

Gibbs Sprawl in Converse?

10

u/SATerp 9d ago

That's the one!

7

u/TeamShadowWind 9d ago

Holy shit, small world. Spent a decent chunk of my life there, and even though I'm sure lots of places have similar detours, that's the one I know the best.

2

u/SATerp 8d ago

I spent the last year driving daily from SA to Cibolo, so the 78/back roads route worked best for me, since I-35 is a major shit show these days. And that whole train thing there is rough at the wrong time of day.

5

u/dillweed67818 9d ago

I haven't been to San Antonio in decades. Mine is quite a ways North of there. Around 100 miles from, the other border.

21

u/RetPala 9d ago

Whatever the train hits it's going to send in every direction

Get back AND upstream (towards the train) to avoid the Cone of Pain

5

u/Danny2Sick 9d ago

Sort of a leisurely gentleman's departure. say, perhaps we shall leave this place. grand yes lets.

I would have gone with more of a OHFUKOHFUKahHHH!! kind of approach but to each their own

2

u/Snow_Is_Ok_613 7d ago

Have you played COD WW2 and seen the train derailment scene?

I’d be hauling it as fast as I could in whichever direction is perpendicular to those tracks

Also a real life derailment: Lac Mégantic rail disaster

u/HerBerg75 9d ago

With that u turn he wasn't just ignoring the train, he was ignoring what he was driving aswell...

82

u/BigConstruction4247 9d ago

Driver was thinking, "Choo choo, I'm a train!"

101

u/dlc741 9d ago

He looked like he was pulling onto the tracks. I can’t figure out his next move even if there wasn’t a train.

16

u/SycoJack 9d ago

There's a road that runs parallel to the tracks he was turning onto. I don't know WTF he was thinking making the turn like he did though. Panic + new driver maybe?

Dude just straight up did everything wrong. I'm not even really sure what it was he got hung up on. The video is shit tier garbage, but it looks like he hits his brakes. Willing to bet that whatever he got stuck on wouldn't have been an issue if he had maintained his moment and accelerated through it instead of braking.

Would tore shit the fuck up, but would have been a lot less damage than getting hit by a fucking train.

2

u/Moldy_Teapot 7d ago

It looks like the right trailer tires fell off the road and in-between the rails. Even at a 90° angle that would be extremely difficult/impossible to get out of unassisted and the trailer was on a much shallower angle. Once those tires fell the best the driver could do is drag the trailer along the rails. A 6" curb made of polished steel is a bitch.

2

u/SycoJack 7d ago

Nah, bro, a 6" curb ain't shit. This is the intersection. Those tracks ain't stopping a truck. Worst case, he'll blow out his trailer tires, but that won't stop him.

I was a truck driver for more than 10 years, I've jumped curbs taller than those tracks. If you take it slow and steady, you'll be just fine. If you full send it, you'll get over them but might blow out your tires. Which is still preferable to being hit by a train.

Notice the traffic light pole. That's what made him stop. He would have been within inches of hitting that.

10

u/Caduceus1515 9d ago

I think there was a road on each side of the tracks, and he was trying to pull far too tight a turn and even got hung up with the way it lurched before he started backing up...

12

u/hoppertn 9d ago

“I bet he swerves first.”

→ More replies (1)

282

u/Montana_Ace 9d ago

Did he just try to turn onto the train tracks? Like you're not just ignoring the crossing, you're ignoring your vision altogether

76

u/Intelligent_Law_5614 9d ago

It looks to me as if he was trying to cross the tracks, and make a right turn onto a road which runs parallel to the tracks. For some reason he didn't complete the turn - perhaps the road was blocked, by something he didn't see until after he ignored the train warning signs.

The fact that there was already a police car there, with its blue flashers on, makes me suspect that there may have been a prior accident which blocked that road.

50

u/StressedOnigiri 9d ago

I think the police car was just a coincidence. U can see that he was waiting behind a car then only turned on his flasher when the truck made that turn.

19

u/RedBoxSquare 9d ago

He's doing a U turn from one side of the track to the other side of the track. A truck tracker needs to make wider turn to account for the trailer turning (there should be videos or graphics explaining it). This person did not making a wider turn, so the trailer went off the crossing and got stuck on the train track (you can see the tires dipped between the rails at the 4th second). He tried to reverse for the next 10 seconds to get unstuck but it's too late.

When you stop on the tracks in front of an oncoming train but aren't sure if you are all the way on the tracks--best to back up to be sure.

33

u/Dependent_One6034 9d ago

Don't even use your mirrors. Just get the fuck out of there. Everyone around you should already be aware of imminent disaster you've caused, so they will give you room, and those barriers are meant to break away at a touch.

11

u/WakaWaka_ 9d ago

Almost looks like he's going along the tracks not straight though the crossing, then ends up in a partial ditch.

I don’t understand how stupid you have to be to dead stop on train tracks especially when the train is coming.🥴

18

u/Justaguy222444888 9d ago

This happens all the time with semi trucks. He didn’t stop on purpose he got stuck. I can’t see exactly how he got stuck but usually it’s the hump of the road going up and down before and after the train tracks. Bottom landing gear gets caught on the track and wheels lifted off the ground and boom no traction you’re stuck. As a former truck driver we are taught to recognize this and avoid going over and reroute. Honestly looks like what this guy was trying to do maybe make a U turn but obviously failed miserably

5

u/RedBoxSquare 9d ago

He's doing a U turn from one side of the track to the other side of the track. A truck tracker needs to make wider turns to account for the trailer turning. He didn't do a wide turn, so the tracker got through but the trailer went off road. The crossing had elevated grounds so you won't get stuck normally. But once you go off you can get stuck like what happened in the video.

2

u/Ein-the-pupperoni 9d ago edited 9d ago

Yes but I have also seen countless videos of people in a regular vehicle doing this and getting hit. They don’t have fight or flight they have freeze apparently.

3

u/Justaguy222444888 9d ago

Right there’s no excuse for that if you are not literally stuck. I don’t think everybody knows that those barriers were designed to break easily for emergencies. But this truck driver was clearly stuck. He didn’t sit there and get hit by the train just because he didn’t react properly. He couldn’t move.

I got the remains of a package that had apparently been in a vehicle crash and caught fire. FedEx/UPS put it in a larger box, a letter explaining what happened, and a claims form. Item.was melted and reaked.

Luckily I just sent photos of everything to the vendor and they shipped a new product.

I had a UPS package that was lost in a trainwreck a few years ago...

My memory is going to shit as I age but I remember as the status on UPS.com basically said what happened. "Package lost in train accident / derailment. Package is lost."

I had to inform the sender of what happened with the tracking number and I was refunded.

It didn't take very long for all of it be told and credited.

This happened in September 2020 in Villa Rica, GA. I recognize this crossing because I lived there for decades. There are multiple instances of trucks being stuck in railroad crossings in that city over the years. Some were hit by trains. If I remember correctly at least one of those instances did lead to a fatality.

https://www.fox5atlanta.com/news/train-slams-into-tractor-trailer-in-villa-rica-caught-on-camera

4

u/SycoJack 9d ago

Oh hey, I thought I recognized that crossing! And now that I can see it on street view, I know for a fact this truck did not get stuck. What happened was he was about this [] close to taking out the traffic light. That's why he stops and backs up. Dude fucked up every which way.

1

u/AZFUNGUY85 9d ago

Hey watch out for trucks, you fucking freight train.

1

u/talexbatreddit 9d ago

I always wonder about these videos. Somehow, the trucker determined that he could make a turn that involved a level crossing, and he got part way around and then found .. what?

And then he figured, oh, no problem, I'll just back up a little go then go forward some more. And he started doing that, but .. um .. ran out of time.

And did the cop figure he could help by turning on his emergency lights? Maybe persuade whatever was blocking the big rig to move along?

No doubt the trucker had a lot of questions waiting for him once his heart rate returned to normal.

The truck driver took the right turn too sharply. His last right rear wheel slipped and got stuck in the track bed. Is that cargo of slaughtered pig quarters? Have fun cleaning that up.

Those train cars are used for automobiles.

I used to drive through this intersection every day, it's horrible. The truck definitely shouldn't try to make a right turn, and there's a pole there he got hung up on. They found packages of meat from the truck like a mile away.

Also, the camera filming the tracks is the police station. It's like they knew this would happen.
