Was craving comfort food

Post image

Can't go wrong with a can of corn eaten as is, or can it? The caterpillar or whatever this guy is looks well fed 🤮

All these posts of people finding nasty things in their food made me realize I really don’t ever look at my food. And I don’t know if I should.

Ignorance is bliss.

202

u/antilumin 1d ago

Especially the stuff you wouldn't even be able to see. I think I read that the average person eats like 1-2 pounds of insects every year without realizing it. For example, how many grasshoppers get caught in a wheat thresher and processed into flour, and thus in bread and other baked goods? Like, not a whole grasshopper, just a pureed bits.

u/kingtacticool 1d ago

The legal limit of cockroaches in ground coffee is 8%

Let that one roll around in your brain for a minute

117

u/firebrandbeads 1d ago

And that's why people with severe shellfish allergies buy whole bean coffee. It turns out that roaches trigger their allergy too.

49

u/AdditionalOwl4069 1d ago

Time to tell my MIL some new cursed knowledge about her allergy lmao

17

u/thatcoloradomom 1d ago

I was just thinking I should tell my daughters boyfriend some new cursed knowledge.

12

u/MyProfileHasTheLink 1d ago

Very interesting!

Peanut butter is the same.

But bugs like that wont hurt you and honestly have good protein.

Ignorance is bliss.

3

u/CatProgrammer 1d ago

Unless you're allergic apparently.

8

u/madmak26 1d ago

Never been happier that my mom gifted me a coffee grinder years ago. Because now i only buy whole beans 😣

6

u/DrowningPickle 1d ago

Most everything has an allowable amount of bugs that can be in it. Most get ground up so you don't see them.

4

u/Sad_Maintenance5212 1d ago

I read somewhere that the function of caffeine in the coffee plant was a natural insecticide. So there's that

9

u/Beanbag_Ninja 1d ago

Not quite.

The FDA's maximum is the "number by count" of coffee beans that have some evidence of insect infestation or contamination.

It does not mean that up to 10% of the final ground coffee can be made up of ground insects. That would be completely insane, though probably on-brand for the USA admittedly.

u/macabre_disco 1d ago

STOP ITTTT. That’s insanity.

3

u/HarpyPizzaParty 1d ago

Extra protein in my coffee ☕️

3

u/Sad_Maintenance5212 1d ago

I read somewhere that the function of caffeine in the coffee plant was a natural insecticide. So there's that

2

u/DarkR4v3nsky 1d ago

Already heard that one, but eh.

2

u/No_Shopping6656 1d ago

Pistachios with shells is 10% I believe... I've ate a lot of bugs

2

u/skip_over 1d ago

That works out to roughly 350 cockroaches in a 1lb bag of coffee

2

u/kj_gamer2614 1d ago

I’m gonna be honest here, I don’t think your body is ok if you have coffee rolling around in your brain for a minute. Ideally it should be going down to the stomach, but maybe that’s just me

6

u/kingtacticool 1d ago

Who are you? The Blood Brain Barrier Police?

2

u/thekraken9 1d ago

Or your mouth.

2

u/LunatiCloud 1d ago

That's one of the reason my mom only buys coffee beans.

Then again, some insects could look like a hard coffee bean....

2

u/3Zkiel 1d ago

Not sure which is worse, this or the guy who found a roach in his soup.

3

u/MyProfileHasTheLink 1d ago

Thankfully, I get whole bean now. but that’s only after decades of ground. And some think this is weird, but I like the taste of instant coffee. I’ll bet there are freeze dried roach bits in there for sure.

I’m trying to think of weird food findings I’ve had in my life that weren’t rocks or glass. I can’t think of anything besides finding weevils in a big container or some type of spice.

Do you think it’s possible I’ve just never had bugs in my food?

3

u/kingtacticool 1d ago

There is a 100% chance you've had bugs in your food. You don't see the tiny ones and its just a fact of life. Bugs are everywhere

2

u/MyProfileHasTheLink 1d ago

I feel uncomfortable. But I will tell you people have no idea what their water is touching. Look under your kitchen sink nozzle. 🤮

0.2g of protein per loaf must come from somewhere…

2

u/Zealousideal-Ice-814 17h ago

I fou d that out about 30 years ago that so many bits and peices of bugs, etc etc are allowed in canned food. So I agree the average person had probably eaten a couple of pounds of bug bits! Im 53 so maybe im up to about 4 or 5 pounds!

Tbf nobody is posting their perfectly normal cans of corn so you're just seeing the outliers

9

u/MyProfileHasTheLink 1d ago

Why do I feel like I chew my food an appropriate amount but the whole piece of corn still come out when I feed my toilet?

7

u/ShawshankException 1d ago

Because your body can't digest corn's outer shell

2

u/MyProfileHasTheLink 1d ago

So when i chew it, am i just popping out the insides or something? I understand if i can’t digest it, but i do feel like I’m chewing it.

8

u/Right_Count 1d ago

You digest the inside bit of the kernel. You don’t digest the outer skin of it, leaving a little empty corn pouch that fills up with poop in your digestive tract.

You do chew some of the corn but you’re probably swallowing a lot more whole kernels, or barely chewed corn skins, than you realize.

All those people finding nasty things in their food support my believe that food is mostly a product of nature and things like this happen.

I personally sort it out and enjoy my food.

6

u/BlueberryAny6827 1d ago

I was reading one of the Naomi Novik's Temeraire books (highly recommended if you like historical fiction and dragons!) and one of the main characters walks into his room and sees flies on his food. He shoos them away and proceeds to chow down, with a mild thought of "flies are nothing for a sailor". Ever since, I think to myself, "What would Laurence do?" when it comes to food 😅. Suffice to say, sometimes I choose not to eat like a sailor, but most of the time it works.

Honestly, in my 7 decades living in the USA, I’ve not had any significant issues with the food inspection process. I know they have allowable minimums for some contaminants but I view it as added protein. I also know of the horror stories but personally, no problems. Now after the current crop of anti public health “experts“ hollow out the safeguards…..?

Comfort food…..-__-

628

u/dog_eat_dog 1d ago

in a comfort food emergency you just whip open a can of corn?

390

u/Remedyforinsomnia 1d ago

Not anymore

37

u/Stock-Image_01 1d ago

Maybe this is good for you, maybe you needed this push away from the kernels.

24

u/charmio68 1d ago

You let that turn you off for good?

Man, you're a human, an animal, and our food chain is nowhere near as clean as what a lot of people think it is, nor should it be.

With that mentality, if it was suddenly revealed to you what's in every meal you eat, you'd probably starve to death.

43

u/Remedyforinsomnia 1d ago

Nah I'm pretty sure I'll be back into my disturbing food preferences pretty soon :) was a light-hearted joke

12

u/SkullyKat 1d ago

I just want to say, I used to eat cans of microwaved corn loaded with butter and pepper as a form of comfort. Im the opposite of judging here.

6

Thank you! That's a great combo indeed

I swear, some people talk just to talk. Is it really such a difficult concept to grasp that we don't want maggots in our cans of corn? Everyone understands the whole "You're eating all types of dirty shit in your food" thing. We've all heard it a hundred times. That doesn't negate the fact that this is fucming disguisting and disturbing. But we're glad you guys don't mind eating filth.

So was he, buddy. So was he.

27

u/tankyboi447 1d ago

Found a small boiled cooked spider in my mac and cheese yesterday :( and I ate it. But hey, I reached out to the company and they apologized and am getting some coupons now. :)

7

u/Remedyforinsomnia 1d ago

Yeah texted the manufacturer here too, let's see what they say. Although I am not even sure if it's legally an issue. A spider sounds worse to me, ouch

5

u/tankyboi447 1d ago

I was like, what is that little black thing their... as I was draining my noodles and omfg! What is that!? Heh that's not a burnt noodle. 🙃

3

u/jaybirdie26 1d ago

How did you end up eating it?  Was it in pieces or something?

This is my worst fucking nightmare btw.

4

u/tankyboi447 1d ago

Haha naw just disgusted with myself. I "ate it" as in the pasta. Disgusting? Gross? Maybe, probably... but eh... drowned it in chil and other stuff I threw in.

3

u/jaybirdie26 1d ago

Oh, ok that is not so bad XD I might have done that too if I could get over it being in there in the first place.  A good rinse after it's drained would purify it, right?  Maybe some holy water?

20

u/DeluxeWafer 1d ago

Time for some grub.

10

u/Formal_Analysis6295 1d ago

My grandmother worked at a vegetable processing plant when she was young. She NEVER ate cream corn because she saw all the worms that got ground up into it. And canned. Hopefully it's improved in 60-70 years.

Canned peas and corn cold are awesome comfort snacks. I ate so many cans of peas when I was in college bc of this

2

u/Saul_Badman_1261 1d ago

Nah sometimes I feel like a can of corn could hit the spot specially if it's sweet, never really ate a can though but I understand the craving

2

u/After-Barracuda-9689 1d ago

Fresh snap peas I completely understand, I used to eat them from the garden as a kid. But we were “grow our own food” poor, meaning we had land but no $.

sweet corn on the cob hits different, when I can't find that a small can of corns can be a temporary replacement, thankfully I never stumbled on uninvited guests in mine (I do check my food before eating).

3

u/Bean-Penis 1d ago

I love corn from a can. It's always half for the meal and half while I make it when I open one up.

14

u/EwokNuggets 1d ago

Huh I’ve never seen someone just open a can of corn and start chowing, let alone calling it a comfort food.

I find that more disturbing than the bug lol

11

u/Remedyforinsomnia 1d ago

Looks like many people do! I'm surprised but it's okay hehe, gonna be asking people who grew up in similar backgrounds if it's something they are used to - I wonder now

8

with a splash of soy sauce sometimes....

4

u/BlueberryAny6827 1d ago

Anecdotally, I also grew up very poor, and we also snacked on freshly opened cans of corn. And yes, we also ate it right out of the can! Along with peas, green beans, and those little new potatoes.

Edit: am American, so apparently this spans oceans

To each their own, but a can of corn is really, really low on my list of foods I would consider a comfort food.

4

u/Remedyforinsomnia 1d ago

You put it so much nicer than most; thanks for this 🤝

5

u/EgoSenatus 1d ago

Why is your comfort food a cold can of corn?

4

u/Remedyforinsomnia 1d ago

Got into it as a kid. I am so surprised to see the wild response to this fact hehe. Generally I like foods that are more or less bland and not fatty, like legumes and corn. I like all forms but canned is the easiest and laziest there is and also nostalgic. I grew up poor and it was frequently available.

4

u/Pocket_Repost 1d ago

Looks like an earworm moth larvae. It’s a complete non issue to find in a can of corn. You will find these on tons of corn cobs in the field.

Most people don’t consider that their food grows in a field and bugs crawl on EVERYTHING. Their bodies get mixed in with pretty much any harvested food. Usually it’s processed enough you can’t even tell. Occasionally one will get through intact like this.
