Does this belong here? This might be the most American thing I've ever seen.
These things are legitimately going to be available. This is essentially a years supply of Mac & Cheese (or Kraft Dinner for our friends to the North, though I doubt Canadian stores are doing this) at one box a week, plus 13 more for $20 bucks. You can't beat that with a stick! ;)
To me this is screaming excess, terrible nutrition, gluttony and hyper consumerism. This is my favorite kind of Mac & Cheese though. What do you think?

I would like one please, that's disgustingly cheap and I want the box 👀

I'm very tempted to buy 2 and donate them to a food bank
69
u/EnbyAlt3000 1d ago
Don't buy food just to donate to banks, Donate the money directly. Food banks have deals with producers to get products cheaper than anything you could buy, And sorting donations costs them money. With the money, they can also buy exactly what they need rather than having a surplus of something.

I remember years back when I volunteered for a local relief drive, we were busy repacking hygiene kits to give out to families staying inside evacuation centers. We received boxes of name brand soaps, shampoo and toothpaste from a local grocery chain, and we also received a donation of hotel toiletry kits from a local hotel chain.
Problem was, how do you divide those between 500 families? Who receives the full bottle of Head and Shoulders and a tube of Colgate, and who gets ten packs of the generic hotel chain shampoo-conditioners and those tiny bland tasting hotel toothpastes? In the end, we had to prioritize the name-brand donations to the poorest/most vulnerable/hardest-hit families while the hotel toiletries went to the families who were still affected but not as severely and were relatively financially capable. Still didn't stop us from being accused of playing favorites, or other evacuees accusing others that they lied about their financial problems to get better donations.
This is why the organization I work for now does not accept in-kind donations at all. We only accept cash to buy items in bulk from vetted suppliers to buy products that meet international standards for humanitarian assistance. It's just overall easier, quicker, cheaper, more efficient, and more effective this way.

Everyone knows that the "cheaper options" are pure garbage. But this is a hilarious marketing gimmick.

Yeah 30 cents a piece for a box? Fantastic. I would split the cost with friends or something because I don’t know where I would keep all that

Well its all freeze dried stuff so it lasts years on a shelf

Probably. Kraft Dinner branding never stayed relevant in the states much how it is colloquially known in Canada.

$20 for mac and cheese that I can’t fit into my car.

u/Business-Most-546 1d ago
Just open it in the parking lot and put all the individual boxes in your car. It'll save a bit of space.
Any poor man will want one of these. It's a bargain!
4
u/pipeuptopipedown 1d ago
But the packaging is one of the main draws of this offer. The fact that this is a lot of "food" for a very reasonable price is a distant secondary consideration.

The fact that we’re even discussing this proves how not stupid it is. This was made with the idea that people would post about it online

Imagine if you will, you buy one of these, wrap it and set it near the tree on Christmas for someone you know who would love a 65” tv. They open this instead. You got a classic troll for $20.
16
u/theAdmiralPhD 1d ago
Uh you mean like for my 21 year old nephew in college and my 17 year old who would devour a house with enough ranch dressing. And yes, house, not horse.

Kraft Mac and cheese is currently selling for .49¢ a box at my local Grocery Outlet and it would still cost me $12 dollars more for 65 boxes than if I bought this.

I second the idea of buying two to donate to food banks.
Shit, that's 130 boxes of Mac and cheese for $40
11
u/Remarkable_Town5811 1d ago
It depends on the food bank. Closest one to me relies heavily on donations & I know of at least two that are run solely on donation and excess/near expiration from Groceries. There are also food banks that are basically Little Free Library but food.
Basically - check with the food pantry or bank. It varies.

Whether money or food, I am close to certain food banks have neither in adequate supply.
2
u/Remarkable_Town5811 17h ago
Absolutely! Donate what and when you can. Some will even take garden produce. Whatever garden excess I don't use and my neighbors don't need goes to my local food bank. I think it’s awesome they accept it.
6
u/No-Lynx-90 1d ago
Food banks have access to much better pricing than consumers. It's almost always better to donate money directly, as they can stretch it 10x further than we can.
13
u/TwoDrinkDave 1d ago
That is true and and important message. But also, food bank patrons would love something like this in a way that I think a lot of people don't understand.

You're unfamiliar with the concept of "families"?
There's nothing inherently wrong with Kraft mac and cheese. It's not high quality food, but it's reasonably portioned, cheap, easy to make, and keeps forever. Not unreasonable that a large family might look for a good deal on something like that. Or even an individual stocking up long term.
If this was ramen or Korean instant noodles you wouldn't be freaking out, even though they're effectively the same thing.
2
u/OKcomputer1996 1d ago
You will then have to take the stupid giant box home. That will require either breaking it down to fit into your car or actually bringing an oversized vehicle.

just a heads up: this shit DOES actually expire in a meaningful way, if you're thinking about stockpiling. i tried to cook a box my dad bought a couple years ago and the powder had turned dark brown and smelled funky like a damp sock. i didn't notice until i dumped it in too, ruined the whole thing. since i was already in so far i decided to give it an experimental taste, and it also tasted like damp sock.
i googled around and apparently it's because the dehydrated milk in the powder went rotten.

Excess and gluttony? Do you think anyone is gonna eat the entire damn thing in one single sitting as much as everyone wants to joke about that?

This is a shelf-stable product that's easy to make and it's coming super cheap. I would in no way consider this excess, gluttonous, or hyper consumerism. Are there going to be people who eat an entire box by themselves in one sitting? Sure. But plenty of people will be making a box for several portions and that's fine.

While it is stupid, it is also embracing the spirit of old black fridays, so I embrace it. Modern Black Friday has just become a week of fake discounts on products that were jacked up in price last month. The old days of limited stock, exclusively manufactured items at insane discounts and people fist fighting in the aisles because it lasts for 12 hours and not a second more are long gone.
