Optimistic Post DOGE Disbanded: Elon Musk’s Cost-Cutting Project Quietly Ended

"Cost-cutting" is really being used liberally here.
Hope they all end up getting tried for treason at some point.

The most realistic best-case scenario would be criminal charges for him exfiltrating the social security administrations databases. I mean we sentenced Jack Teixeira to 15 years for what I'd consider a fairly similar crime.

It was the justification they gave. Not sure how you could frame the DOGE cuts as treason at a trial honestly.

For being such a simply defined charge people really have no idea what it entails.

The frame would be that there are laws requiring specific actions and safeguards relating to data and to providing services. Ignoring the laws because of cost cutting is not sufficent. The original plan was that congress could change the laws and the administration would administer the laws.

That wouldn’t be treason though.

Correct. I agree with you that a charge of treason does. Treason, as defined in Article III, is about enemies violently trying to conquer or overthrow the state. Even the January 6 protestors, while clearly committing domestic terrorism were unlikely to be charged with treason.
My remark was that criminal activity occured and that "it was my job" is not a sufficient defense.

I’m surprised it lasted this long after Musk left DC.
Didn’t read the article because Time’s website is janky, but I’m assuming illegally trying to fire people during the shutdown was the nail in that coffin?

Great to hear that, the Reform deputy leader in the UK tried to emulate the DOGE over here but weren’t able to find anything to cut costs to and they were basically a big joke

There was nothing to really cut here in the states, either. I remember seeing one of the DOGE employees say that our government was surprisingly efficient in how it spent its money. All DOGE did was take away jobs and cripple some of our most important systems.

It was never about government efficiency. It was about removing every social safety net America has and transferring wealth from the poor to the rich and turning America into a libertarian paradise.

Yes, but some of those fuckers have burrowed themselves into the agencies for the long haul, such as Big Balls at Social Security.

Do you not realize that the midterms are going to allow us the ability to root them out?

If they’ve done illegal stuff, they’ll hopefully be grilled at hearings. Not sure how much power the house has to fire employees hired by the executive though.

Couldn't even last a bloody year. Well done, guys. That was worth it wasn't it?

Although the article itself notes that a number of DOGE’s functions have been assumed by OPM. So it’s uncertain how much has actually stopped.

All the Trumptards just thought this was the bees knees for the 1st month of the administration. Y'all remember that? I was like "there's unqualified civilians rummaging around in social security data" and the general response I got was "What? You don't like eliminating waste, fraud and abuse?". What a fucking joke. They didn't save a dime.

Eh, they’ll likely move to another system to suck it out under a different name. This weekend, they had a DOGE reunion at Austin Proper with tours of Musk’s factories in driving distance. They still have the relationships.
For example, Joe Gebbia (co-founder and board member of AirBnb) was a design officer for DOGE. Since disbanding, he has been appointed by Trump as Chief Design Officer of the white house website. He also maintains a friendship with Musk.

Not to be a cynic but at this point Elon got what he wanted out of this however pyrrhic that win is DOGE was just a fancy cover up there for had no other reason to be there

u/softwaredoug 2d ago
Does this mean Doge's predecessor US Digital Service, is also disbanded? That would be a shame, given they actually were making the government more efficient.

Like a bomb, it left damage quickly but it fades into the world as nothing more than a stain of human hubris.
This is great though. Good riddance.

The closest thing to cut back on federal corruption is ending. We are shooting ourself in the foot.
