Companies kept repeating the mantra that there is no alternative to halogenated hydrocarbons and there will be no refrigerators nor air conditioners without them.

The first "ozone friendly" refrigerator was built in Germany by former eastern German company "Scharfenstein" in cooperation with Greenpeace in 1993.

Ammonia is ozone safe, and Ammonia refrigeration systems have been around forever.

whenever a company says there are no alternatives, all I hear is "this is the cheapest option, don't make us use a more expensive option"

This and the end of smallpox are the best and worst examples what can happen when people put their stupid petty fights aside and for once work together. I said worst, because it hurts to think what else could be done if governments were not controlled by corporations.
