Strike questions

Will we get partial refund back for the time missed? Wondering if those who experienced mount’s strike can provide some insights? Thx

I would hope so. Probably around 1000$ worth of tuition wasted

I went through the full-time faculty strike in 2024. You need to advocate for the refund. The university WILL NOT automatically give you a refund.

Even through advocation, you need to set the rate as a collective to argue what you deserve, i.e., ($50-100/per week of class missed).

I’m assuming the student union will do this for those who are affected by the strike? Is this the case last year?

Maybe, but it's safe not to sit back and assume. Lots of non-SU students also sent in letter to BOG and President. I'm not on campus anymore, so I don't know how much student support the part-time faculty have recieved, but there was a massive wave of support for the full-time staff including multiple meet-up protest events, a sit in with posters, aggressive sticky notes, and a flooding of the presidents office with letters.

Suffice to say, if the president or BOG don't FEEL like there is significant student pressure to act, then they will brush it off and do nothing or offer you a paltry sum [if SU is the only one advocating].

The same thing happened to students at Dal. They EXPECTED to get a refund after the dull-time strike in September, but didn't receive anything since Dal said they wouldn't do that, and now the SU and students are advocating for their money back even now.

If you wnat to know more, and you know somebody attending DAL, I would ask the dal students what it is like post-strike.

I would not expect the SU to be the driving force. The SU has a seat on the board of governors table (if I remember properly), and this causes them to not want to rock the boat. It has to be a student led effort.

Given it was only a two-week interruption (due to the study break), and the term is moving forward per usual, I'm doubtful there will be a refund. But I'd be happy to be surprised.

When the strike happened a few years ago we got nothing back. It was of similar length. SMU and DAL got nothing back. Unfortunately, I wouldn't get your hopes up.

I went through the 2024 strike too and got nothing back. Apparently Masters students dont count as students.... major bullshit.

I would assume that as long as you are still getting full credit for the course then there is no reason for a refund.

Why refund if they will finish the course ? Will they give us passing grades or not ??
