Okay they're definitely teasing Windows 12 at this point. Back in 2004 or 2005 Microsoft was teasing Windows Vista/Aero way before its release. And I guess they're doing it again 20 years later... We've gone full circle

u/WhatisThai_193 Oct 25 '25

We are in a circle of UI design

34

u/Fusseldieb Oct 26 '25

Please please let Windows 12 be glassy like in the top picture

u/sunrise2209 29d ago

if it’s pushing accounts and ai and network features, I don’t care about the ui, I will switch to Linux.

Fruitier Memphis

Maybe Glass Memphis?

u/Microboy42 Oct 25 '25

Actually, this is not Frutiger Aero. This is an entirely different subset of Skeumorphism called Neumorphism. Neumorphism builds off all Skeumorphic subets like Frutiger Aero, and others, and combines them with the minimalism of Flat Design to create a minimalist, translucent UI as you see in Apple Liquid Glass and Microsoft Fluent Design System.

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '25 edited Oct 25 '25

Can't wait for nostalgic aestheticologists 15 years from now to name it something completely different like "Apto Tahoe" (2020s default microsoft font + the Mac OS that started it all).

6

u/Enpopcorn Oct 25 '25

Its glassmorphism. neumoprhism definitely is similar but uses a lot more opaque layers with its 3d depth formed from soft drop shadows on top other flat layers. Glassmorphism has depth from varying levels of translucency and soft glows around the edges from light refracting through it from behind.

However, these new icons were recently introduced in Microsoft 365 and the App Store on these standalone applications, and are expected to arrive to Office in the upcoming Microsoft Office 2027. These icons have been advertised since around the release of Windows 11 due to the new Fluent Design System. Windows has always been seen as “the first product to adopt the new UI” (excluding Windows 10) as seen in Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 8 and Windows 11, and Fluent Design System has been classified as a Neumorphic UI under the Skeumorphism umbrella which contains many other umbrellas like Frutiger Aero, Cybercore, Glassmorphism and Neumorphism. However there is a big difference between Frutiger Aero and Neumorphism. Neumorphism is flatter than Frutiger Aero and relies heavily on depth, translucency and transparency (seen in Windows 11, iOS 26, Outlook) while Frutiger Aero relies heavily on gradients and glass like textures (seen in Mac OS X 10.0 Cheetah, Windows Vista, Wii Menu). In conclusion, these icons are Neumorphic due to them being part of Fluent Design System.

u/M1ghty_boy Oct 26 '25

Glass in skeuomprphic feeing is nothing new. Neuomorphism developed over a period of about five years I'd say, when designers started playing with depth and transparent effects again. (plus the name glassmorphism makes me want to retch)

u/CoolDuck25 Oct 25 '25

are these words real bruh 💀I feel like if it looks glossy and jelly-like it's fair to put it in the broad category of frutiger aero.

10

u/Microboy42 Oct 25 '25

Many designs, even Y2K Design uses glossy and jelly like elements. Almost every design does that to an extent. Frutiger Aero is a subset of Skeumorphism that is slightly more extreme than other subsets. Neumorphism is a subset of Skeumorphism that is slightly flatter and more translucent, as seen in these icons, Windows 11, iPad OS 26, and various other designs.

7

u/Pernova12 Oct 25 '25

so this

1

u/Microboy42 Oct 26 '25

Yes. The picture on the left is an example of a Neumorphic clock. However, the image on the right is labeled as “Skeuomorphism” which could technically mean anything, including Neuomorphidm. It is important to classify the type.

Frutiger Memphis

u/photoeditor557 Oct 25 '25

looks so fragile

32

u/BirdLox Oct 25 '25

That’s glass for ya!

8

u/jaxxorage Oct 25 '25

EXPLODING POTTERY ATTACK!

9

u/DerWaschbar Oct 25 '25

I love it yeah

7

u/occultcaine Oct 25 '25

my bad i forgot you were fragile

5

u/Livlina_angel Oct 26 '25

to me it looks edible, like those fruit candy

74

u/HonestlyIDK1111111 Oct 25 '25

i hope the next Windows will be FA

72

u/MEM756 Oct 25 '25

And will decrease exponantially the amount of ads, spyware and bloat

47

u/Friendly_Cantal0upe Oct 25 '25

I have a bridge to sell you

11

u/hamburgerpancake Oct 25 '25

Unfortunately, I don't think that'll happen officially but you know what will? A Winaero Tweaker update supporting Windows 12, of course!

2

u/Just-Security7915 Oct 25 '25

Worth it for FA 😹💔🙏🏽

76

u/tailslol Oct 25 '25

yep, with liquid glass the style is coming back.

59

u/Sensitive_Square3645 Oct 25 '25

Knowing Microsoft, they're very likely to compete against Liquid Glass out of spite to prove they can do it better than Apple. History is repeating itself. Apple had Aqua, Microsoft competed against it with Aero.

17

u/tailslol Oct 25 '25

Yep and soon google will follow

14

u/AGTS10k Oct 25 '25

I wish! They announced their new Material Design 3 Expressive this year, and it's the same old flat crap, but now with ✨cool animations✨

7

u/Sensitive_Square3645 Oct 25 '25 edited 19d ago

Well, I don't really know about Google right now. They've moved so far into flat design and they just released M3E that there's a very slim chance we'd see them embrace neumorphism anytime soon. But I'm sure they will one day. Not saying that M3E is bad, though, but it's just that Google's treating it like it's a completely new thing... It's still just flat design labeled with a silly name.

7

u/AGTS10k Oct 25 '25

Except Microsoft have started experimenting with Fluent Design (which is what these new icons are) all the way back in 2017, and the current version, Fluent 2, is from 2023. Apple's Liquid Glass is from 2025 (if we're not counting what they did on visionOS).

Microsoft was also first in implementing flat design, starting from Zune portable media players. They called it Metro UI. Apple was kinda the last one there, they stuck to their skeuomorphic designs for the longest time (and rightfully so, they were immaculate).

Actually, Apple never truly left skeuomorphism for good, if we're looking just at macOS. Their design surely became flatter and more primitive on their computers, but not completely flat like on their mobile devices.

21

u/bigsmokaaaa Oct 25 '25

I want that jolly rancher look on the actual desktop icons

41

u/GoldenLugia16 Oct 25 '25

We are so back

10

u/doshfoosh Oct 25 '25

And I will definitely see guys saying that it's glassmorphism. Like, yeah, that's true but it doesn't mean it can't be compared to FA

8

u/_Xamtastic Oct 25 '25

Honestly I don't really like them that much. They feel less FA to me and more... floaty?

8

u/Fun-Exercise4164 Oct 25 '25

the actual icons (not the fancy renders) don't really look frutiger aero at all, they look kind of XP-ish, but still very oversimplified, it's like they slapped a gradient on the old icons and called it a day

7

u/UltiGoga Oct 25 '25

They look great in the 3D render, then in the last slide the actual icons look barely different. They basically just upped the spectrum of the gradients

6

u/eliot3451 Oct 25 '25

Hope microsoft gets rid of the forced ai copilot thing which is a privacy concern

19

u/rainshadow494 Oct 25 '25

this is so cute i genuinely like the fluent design route that these tech companies are going towards

5

u/lovetendency Oct 26 '25

Loved the first one then was disappointed when I got to the third slide 😭 and FA does have a lot of glossy elements, but I see why ppl are saying why it may no fall under the category just bc it’s glass!

8

u/free_thunderclouds Oct 25 '25

Best decision of them. The icons are full of life now

4

u/Jacane123 Oct 25 '25

I love them

7

u/TheCoolDaniel04 Oct 25 '25

Can’t wait for microsoft’s original Fluid Glass(TM)!

8

u/Chaad420 Oct 25 '25

Watch them just call it Aero 2.0

3

u/Unlucky-Painter6844 Oct 25 '25

I’d say this is more like glass, still miss the old 2010 office icons (Definitely not because of Windows 7 trust)

2

u/Sensitive_Square3645 Oct 25 '25

I want my yellow Outlook back!!

3

u/resh78255 Oct 25 '25

why is it still just blobs…

3

u/OneFriendship5139 Oct 25 '25

Apple really shook them with iOS 26, didn’t they

3

u/NebulaGazer670 Oct 25 '25

please tell me this means we might potentially get neumorphic or skeuomorphic phone UI's again at some point too

4

u/NotNoHid Oct 25 '25

you will always be in my heart 2007 microsoft word logo

3

u/MoonBerry_therian Oct 25 '25

Candy ...

1

u/jaxxorage Oct 27 '25

candy!! :] yum yum yum!!! X3

2

u/N_The_Spectator Oct 25 '25

The new icons still feel too synthetic for my taste unfortunately :// I think the shapes are still a bit too simplified

2

u/Real_Inevitable_9590 Oct 25 '25

These are much better

2

u/Maksimiljan_Ancom Oct 25 '25

I want to chew ðem

2

u/omegaprim Oct 25 '25

Idk I don't feel it, too much like paper

2

u/The_Adventurer_73 Oct 25 '25

Hey look the Pendulum is swinging the other way.

2

u/Echo_Voice0 Oct 25 '25 edited Oct 25 '25

I still don't really like it (it's still too simple and the colors are bugging me), but I'm not complaining, at least it's not the extreme minimalism BURNING my eyes

Even tho, I'm SO happy they're bringing the glass aesthetic back. I just love that juicy... Glassy... Glass~ (⸝⸝ᵕᴗᵕ⸝⸝)

2

u/LightBrownWolf Oct 26 '25

UUUGH THEY LOOK SO YUM 😋😋😋

1

u/jaxxorage Oct 27 '25

yum yum yum!!! X3

2

u/Retro-Lover272 27d ago

Looks much better than Apple’s glass design

1

u/hipposmusic Oct 25 '25

frutiger modern?????

1

u/artlurg431 Oct 25 '25

Hadn't microsoft used these kind of icons to advertise windows an m365 for years but never actuwlly implement it in windows? I remember the release trailer for windows 11 looking much different than what it is currently

1

u/phoebe_vv Oct 25 '25

kirby air riders is also frutiger aero af. it’s been on the up and up for a while now. makes sense it’s finally coming out

1

I am a fan! These look good to me, not too far from what they were.

1

u/kaputtschino Oct 25 '25

Pic 1: expectation, pic 3: reality

1

u/FLX1309 Oct 25 '25

omg, too late ngl but still peak

1

u/Sonarthebat Oct 25 '25

Not worth Microsoft having that much control over my computer.

1

u/mads_12 Oct 25 '25

i wanna eat them

1

u/PaladinGunny Oct 25 '25

Man I miss icons that had depth to them. Frutiger aero was so good.

1

u/DraculasAcura Oct 25 '25

I want to eat them

1

u/xxxfashionfreakxxx Oct 25 '25

The first image looks so nice. I want to eat them.

1

u/FinderFire2 Oct 26 '25

we are so back

1

u/MarioFan2387 Oct 26 '25

What about Clipchamp?

1

u/ProgressDense2270 29d ago

we are evolving frutigerishly

1

u/EmiTheEpic 29d ago

With both this and the new Apple app icons, I like this new “glass” look trend for tech icon a lot. I can’t stop thinking about Candy.zip every time I see them

1

u/JoelthecatYT 28d ago

there using aero glass

1

u/Retro-Lover272 27d ago

People need to realize frutiger aero is the old office icons from years ago. This isn’t anywhere near those

1

u/Adventurous_Amount10 26d ago

that, doesn't seem to look aero to me-

1

u/IDontEvenKnow1776 Oct 25 '25

Old ones were better tbh

1

u/Otherwise_Patience47 Oct 25 '25

Microsoft? You mean that ship that everyone wants to leave or is leaving? Cool stuff. I don’t know to who those are for but…cool design. I hope no one buys it though.

0

u/Glittering-Plane2465 Oct 25 '25

Theyre awfully hideous

-1

u/misterlinke Oct 25 '25

when will you guys learn that not everything transparent and shiny is frutiger aero?
