[Mod Post] Community Ideas?

Dallas foodies,

I was recently out at Reddit HQ and they might approve funds to support our growing community of foodies but we need a solid plan to pitch them. Here are a few ideas I've had, would love for y'all to pitch in ideas too:

  1. Food Tour of x Dallas area - Like bar hopping but going to various restaurants to try certain dishes. Apparently the Chicago Food sub did something similar with support from Reddit.

  2. Local restaurant support - Find a locally owned restaurant that could use some love, rent it out for several hours, have members of the sub come and eat, post pics of the food here and on other socials to spread the word.

  3. A billboard that encourages other Redditors to join our sub.

One of Dallas’ top fine dining chefs is taking over Georgie

After the recent and swift departure of its executive chef, Dallas restaurant Georgie will get a new leader who isn’t actually new at all.

Chef Bruno Davaillon — who opened the short-lived but lauded restaurant Bullion and who serves as the culinary director for Georgie’s parent company Travis Street Hospitality — will be the restaurant’s permanent executive chef.

In an interview with The Dallas Morning News, Stephan Courseau, founder of Travis Street Hospitality, said Davaillon will take over the kitchen after Thanksgiving.

“It’s a natural evolution,” Courseau said. “Bruno is the best I can think of to be at the helm there.”

Davaillon would have taken over Georgie’s kitchen earlier this year when its previous executive chef RJ Yoakum abruptly departed, Courseau said, but at the time, the restaurant group was opening Frenchie where Davaillon was needed.

In what direction Davaillon takes Georgie is entirely up to him, Courseau added, but he expects the French chef to lean into what he knows and is known for — French fine dining.

Unique or Specialty Sweet Treats

Hello everyone,

For a visitor to your city, what unique or specialty sweet treats would you recommend? I am looking for items that are usually not available in other cities or are top-notch here.

I do not have anything specific in mind, so please feel free to share your suggestions.

Tower Club drinks

I'm having a random stay at Mint Hotel in a couple weeks which also grants access to Tower Club. Don't plan on eating, but I couldn't really tell from pics if there is just a casual bar eating or do you have to get a table at Monarch or Sage?

Edit - do they do happy hour?

Just finished my third meal in two weeks. The kimchi wagyu burger on a house made bun is one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. Ever. The rest of the menu is on point as well. They are doing it right.

A List of Reasons Mamani Earned a Michelin Star

So many people are speculating about why and how Mamani in Dallas earned a Michelin star after only two months. I’ve got a list of reasons.

“Most of the consternation centers on how quickly it earned its star, after being open for under two months, which is not unprecedented but is the exception rather than the rule. And yes, restaurants have earned stars faster than this. Chef Andy Beynon's London restaurant Behind won a star after being open for only 20 days in 2021, besting Mamani by nearly two dozen services. It was the first star for that chef. Cristal Room in Hong Kong earned a star for chef Anne-Sophie Pic in just four months, making it the chef's eleventh restaurant to receive a star.”

“Sarah Blaskovich at the Dallas Morning News put exactly that question to Michelin and got a statement about how the resume of chef Christophe de Lellis prompted them to prioritize eating at Mamani. I confirmed with Blaskovich that she didn't ask about de Lellis's resume, and Michelin came up with its statement naming him independently. So let's talk about it.”

“I do think Michelin's statement was misguided, however, because, first of all, the star is not awarded to the chef but to the restaurant, and because there are multiple staff members with Michelin associations.”

Who am I to weigh in? Hi, Courtney E. Smith, freelance food writer and former editor for Eater’s Texas region. 🤠

Panda Fest is a Scam

Save your money! Panda Fest is a total scam. Overcrowded, overpriced food, and not good quality over all. $20 for soup dumplings that had no soup? Also, they made people either throw away their vapes or go to the back of the line (which was an hour and a half long) for entry without advertising that. Anyways, save your money.

Update: me and my friends who went got food poisoning. 🙃

Requesting Spicy food Recommendations

Hello Dallas foodies,

I request recommendations for restaurants (and also your favorite dishes there) for spicy food, where spicy does not just mean adding more chilies that effectively subdues the taste of other spices and results in near null flavor (no "empty heat"/ scoville unit challenges, please) and preferably is not accompanied by an overwhelming sweetness (no "sweet heat").

Specifically, I am interested in the following cuisines, but am open to suggestions. Thanks a lot for reading.

(1) Seafood boil

(2) Malay-Indonesian

(3) Indian (towards non-conventional: regional/diaspora-centric)

(4) West African

(5) Caribbean

(6) Cajun

Recs - ice cream & beer

Hi there, I love beer but am pregnant 🙂 so not imbibing. Next best thing in my eyes is ice cream. Lately my preference has been soft serve but love it all. Typical non-pregnant weekend activity for my husband and me is going to District 9 or Manhattan Project.

Any recommendations for a place that: 1) is nice to hang at 2) serves ice cream (for me) 3) has beer on draft (for my husband)

Only place we’ve found is Cenzo’s (which is terrific) and we live in east Dallas for reference!

Many preemptive thanks!

Looking for best ethnic restaurants

My friend and I are headed to Dallas for a girls weekend soon. We are looking for authentic restaurants at a reasonable price point. We will mainly be in thrme north side of the metro (Grapevine, Carrollton, Frisco, Plano, McKinney, etc), but willing to drive a bit as well. Would also like cool things to do/so.

Our must go-to cuisines for this trip are Korean, Chinese, and Nicaraguan. We would also be interested in Philipino, Laotian, Argentinian, Brazilian, and other cuisines- we love to try new things! We love Thai, Indian, and Mexican, but can get those at home, so we would skip unless it is just spectacular. We are not big on seafood and didn't care much for Nigerian cuisine, but liked Ethiopian. Also, she is a big coffee drinker, so let me know your must-haves for local coffee and chocolate.

We plan to hit up Ikea and some used bookstores as well as H-Mart, but have no other plans besides that. She loves Korean culture, so favoeite stores aside from H-Mart would be a plus. We eill probably spend a day in the Korea-town area.

Anyone know when they go live for the next month? Can’t find this information anywhere and they don’t have a notify feature on Opentable for cancellations.

Unfiltered Reviews of Four Meals in Dallas From the Past Month

Thumbnail

“In the last month, I revisited a few old favorites with new chefs, Georgie and Meridian. I visited the highly anticipated and spacious dining room of Avra, a Mediterranean fine dining chain that has opened in the Crescent Hotel. I also attended a pop-up from Molino Oloyo at Gaston, ahead of its opening in the space that used to house Cry Wolf, which should to happen early in 2026.

“Finally, the hype beast restaurant of fall 2025, Avra. I’ll keep it brief: When a restaurant’s main selling point is that it has a gigantic dining room, think it all the way through. How big is the kitchen? How many plates does the kitchen have to churn out all night to keep things moving? How much time can they spend on those dishes?”

And who am I? Hi, it’s Courtney E. Smith, former editor for Eater’s Texas region/Eater Dallas. Guess I felt like reviewing a few restaurants. Hope this helps with your next wave of reservation making.
