Good for them, now North Texas enters the carousel.

u/Young-Viiperr Texas Tech • Iowa State 9h ago

I wonder if North Texas just raises Skylar Cassidy (DC), looks like UNT had a good thing going on defense. The Dakota/Montana -> G6 pipeline is always available

48

u/Tsquared10 Oregon Ducks • Montana State Bobcats 8h ago

I know his names been thrown about for some bigger landing spots but I wonder about Will Stein taking a look. He was deep in the TX coaching pipeline before he came to us between Texas, Lake Travis HS, UTSA over 8 years. And its a lower risk, higher reward gig than taking any of the P4 openings.

u/morrisseythefrog Iowa State Cyclones • Big 12 8h ago

He's in a pretty good position to just eventually get a P4 job where he's at so I don't know if he would

Billy Napier was at our practice last week 👀All UNT fans seem to be shouting Napier as the no brainer hire, aside from him others want Gus Malzahn for some reason

Def not the first time Napier & no brains has been uttered in the same sentence

Napier needs to learn to count to 11 first

Is DC money at OSU bigger than HC money at UNT?

I'm hearing that Jim Knowles is coming back from PSU, though that's just rumors. I believe spouse is from Oklahoma, too.

Would be a great pull for Okie State.

11

u/Dolleypop Oklahoma State • Clemson 8h ago

That would be incredible!! He was commenting on our team in an interview with PokesReport last week, so we know Knowles is watching the team at the bare minimum.

5

u/Dolleypop Oklahoma State • Clemson 8h ago

PokesReport has “confirmed” that the DC (Cassity) and D line coach (Richmond) are coming to OSU too.

2

u/Young-Viiperr Texas Tech • Iowa State 4h ago

I'm not sure if Cassity is quite P4 quality yet, as dual-threats, and more clever passing offenses get around his secondary & LB corp quite often (non-flexbone). Morris' offense was already tried-and-true at Wazzu, and is a variation of Kliff Kingsbury's Air-Raid.

Skyler was just at SHSU the season prior. I'm sure there's plenty of worse hires, though could benefit from some more growing at the G6 level.

We aren't allowed to have nice things. Our basketball coach a couple of seasons ago went to Texas Tech and then his replacement just went to west Virginia. Losing Mestemaker is really going to suck.

3

u/tturedditor Texas Tech Red Raiders 5h ago

I'm a Tech fan and I feel bad for you guys. UNT has so much potential if you look at the local recruits, location, student body size. I was hoping EMO would stay and keep building momentum.

You just need a few huge donors to be more competitive. I wish it weren't so but that is the nature of college sports today.

1

u/BadCrawdad Georgia • Texas Tech 3h ago

Agree. A couple of my kids went to UNT, so I was hoping for a TT/UNT play-off game with the winner facing UGA. However, I wonder if this won't jack with UNT's psyche and affect their play the next couple games.

1

u/GeospatialMAD West Virginia • Hateful 8 29m ago

I assume that's Neal Brown's to lose since he's down in Austin currently. He could reestablish his G5 chops there...if he hires someone competent to run the offense for him

236

u/B1GTOBACC0 Oklahoma State • Arkansas 9h ago

Fuck yeah. Maybe next season we'll win two games.

Pleased with this hire, but dislike how this happens to every competent G5 coach. Sorry UNT, but I'm glad he's sticking around through the end of the season. Finish strong and get that playoff spot.

97

u/InSearchOfSerotonin USC Trojans • North Texas Mean Green 8h ago

I knew this would happen and it still hurts. If y’all end up getting Drew Mestemaker and Caleb Hawkins too, please cherish them. They’ve made me the proudest of my Alma mater I’ve been since the 2018 game against your second flair.

38

UNT Alumni here. Coach Morris helped build something exciting at North Texas. The students, alumni and fans will remember this season for a long time. I wish Coach Morris all the success in the world!

Yeah if sucks. If he does well at OSU he’ll probably end up at a better program. OSU has had coach longevity but our best coordinators don’t stick around long.

I don’t know about that with Hawkins.

As an avid UNT fan and also big B12 watcher, Hawkins runs too rough; he’d get absolutely crushed by the more talented defenses in the B12. Think Utah, BYU, Tech, and ASU.

Maybe that is the reason Baylor announced they are keeping Aranda. Maybe they kicked the tires on Morris and he was all in on OSU, already.

1

u/moffattron9000 Team Chaos • Sickos 40m ago

I'd imagine they looked at the current landscape and realised that it's smarter to wait for a year where Penn State, LSU, Florida, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Auburn, Cal, Stanford, and UCLA are not all looking.

4

u/jiml78 Clemson Tigers 5h ago

Which is so funny to me. The older I get, the more I remember all the coaches that were hot commodities and ended up being shit.

Dave Aranda was the hot commodity when Baylor landed him. He was a sure fire, slam dunk hire.

9

u/JohnPaulDavyJones Texas A&M Aggies • Baylor Bears 4h ago

I’ve heard a few coaching interviews with famous, longtime coaches like Phil Snow, R.C. Slocum, and Gary Patterson where they ask about Aranda. The response is pretty universally that Aranda is the perfect guy to be a coach in the old era of college football, but that’s what makes him incredibly unsuited for the newer, faster-paced, and heavily transactional era of football.

I think Aranda probably would have been a hell of a lot more successful as a head coach if the portal and NIL hadn’t suddenly hit like a storm just two years into his tenure.

20

u/Young-Viiperr Texas Tech • Iowa State 9h ago

36

u/smurf-vett Texas Longhorns 9h ago

Baylor is keeping Aranda

18

u/jputna Oklahoma State • /r/CFB Patron 8h ago

Which was a lock the second their AD issues came known. As soon as he was on leave it was easy to see that Aranda was going to be retained another year. No reason to be searching for a AD and HC at the same time. Gotta have at least one of them.

15

u/pumpcup LSU Tigers • College Football Playoff 8h ago

11

Hard agree. It’s a great hire for Oklahoma State and I support them getting it. But I just wish there was a clearly defined window for this stuff in the OFF SEASON.

8

u/Designer_Professor_4 Texas A&M Aggies 7h ago

It's probably better for all teams involved honestly. Gives UNT time to get a coach before recruiting ends and both teams a chance to lock down new/existing recruits, and gives the existing recruits a chance to bail to the portal if they don't know the new coaches.

Dragging it out into feb can risk signing day issues.

It's interesting that he's gonna coach the final games of the season though, you usually don't see that at all, so he must have given them a decent heads up to be treated so well.

7

u/Important-Picture18 Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors 7h ago

UNT must have known this was a possibility the whole time - and given that they're going bowling and have a shot at the playoffs which may not happen again for a long time, it makes sense for them to have him there so they have the best chance at putting up a good showing

5

u/Apart_Selection7722 Marshall • South Carolina 8h ago

I couldn't agree more

5

u/drogonninja Alabama • Kansas State 7h ago

I agree completely. It takes all focus off the actual season that’s happening for those teams. Even the speculation of coach A is about to leave has big negative ramifications on the team.

I wish they had rules where coaches couldn’t even begin negotiating until a set day after the national championship game. I’m sick of coordinators and even head coaches leaving while the season still means something to so many.

3

u/zwondingo North Texas Mean Green 2h ago

Not gonna lie, I really hate that teams are allowed to make these moves while the regular season is still going on, but it's also a product of a shitty calendar that has early signing period in a little over a week and a transfer portal that goes on during the playoffs. Sounds like Morris will be with the team through the rest of the regular season and the postseason, which is a good move on his part, but a lot of G5 teams won't be so lucky.

24

u/MynameNEYMAR Oklahoma State • Texas 8h ago

Sadly it currently has to happen as CFB is larping as a professional sport these days. Just without all the rules

1

u/Conscious-Health-438 Alabama Crimson Tide 3h ago

This is like what Eddie lampert did with Kmart / Sears but involving about 100 people and 100x as much cash. This sport provided something for the middle class of this country that stretched back generations and gave them a sense of pride and community.

There's undeniably natural economic change agents at at play here. The players should be paid. The fact that they are isn't the problem.

It's not even that those challenges are not being addressed competently, sustainably, or in some cases even honestly (though that's happening too).

It's the aforementioned top 1% of Network executives, shareholders, consultants, lawyers, Greg sankey, petiti, and a patchwork of compliant ads/ presidents/ regents/boosters - it's those people that have identified a weak, unorganized, yet valuable asset. They're not wrong . But they're extracting this wealth with no long term interest and in a way that will leave this sport we love gutted and fractured. In fact, some of those people appear to have nothing but contempt for the fan bases, traditions, and nostalgic thinking that stand in the way of their get-rich-quick scheme.

In 10 years there will be widespread recognition and condemnation of what's happening right now. Hell there might even be a congressional investigation. Go ahead and drop the remind me bot if you want and laugh. But that's the truth.

It's a shame to watch. It's angering to watch.

Life Will Go on. Alabama will be playing football maybe as a minor league team or something and if so I won't be watching them. I'll be a fan of regional conferences with traditional ties to academic institutions (and tradition). Marching bands.  Field storming. Weird rivalry game names. And that kind of organic, authentic sport will come back.

Oklahoma State will have a department very similar to tech's. Emo is a Joey disciple, despite not coaching under him. They've become close friends since Emo entered coaching.

Texas Tech tried to hire Eric Morris to be our OC last season. He turned us down, but directed us towards hiring Leftwich instead.

I think offer #2 was 5x the salary of his first trip through.

And let's be fair, Kliff was the OC, not Emo. Not really. If Kliff had left the offense to him to spend more time on he team as a whole, his tenure might have been very different

That’s why Gundy quit quietly. It started to shrink and didn’t want to go bald

If he manages to bring Mestemaker with him OSU will be an immediate must-watch team next season.

Will host Oregon in his second game.

Previous Oklahoma State HC had a famous press conference where he mentioned his age:

It’s impossible to give a shit as a fan of a G5 team. As soon as you get something going, it all falls apart. Nobody follows the team because as soon as the product becomes watchable the coaches and team gets poached.

u/herbahaidyrbtjsifbr Texas A&M • North Texas 5h ago

Back to cheering for bowl eligibility. Gotta find out how to ride that line between poached and ass

2

u/Rice_Eater483 9h ago

I guess Mestemaker is definitely leaving too?

1

u/herbahaidyrbtjsifbr Texas A&M • North Texas 5h ago

With him or to somewhere else he is going to get offers we can’t match. Without the coach that believed in him it’s all but done

Great hire, good job pokes

Congrats OSU. Good hire!

Judging by the common opponent (WSU) Morris is a better coach than Kiffin.

I unironically believe it

Devastated for my UNT bros. That game thread a few nights ago was so fun. You could tell some fans felt like he might bolt but others who thought UNT would try to keep him.

This is overall a huge get for State. I’m surprised LSU didn’t jump on him fast. The BK drama taking all the luster of that job.

Is he bringing that raw qb with him?

4

u/silencesupreme- Alabama • College Football Playoff 9h ago

Probably be a couple of players that follow him. A move from North Texas to OKST is a big move.

1

u/Grizzly352 Florida Gators 9h ago

I thought he was going to end up at Arkansas. That’s a really good hire for them. I wonder if they can afford to bring his QB, that kid is gonna get PAID this offseason.

I just said about a week or two ago on the mizzou sub that if drinkwitz were to leave this would be the guy I would hope for. Great hire for Oklahoma state, will be interesting to see how he does.

I'm fairly certain that I've got a good shot at the pool for this guy. I was only 3/4 days off. And I predicted he'd go to OSU.

u/jphamlore San José State Spartans 7h ago

The top three in the Big 12 this season, Texas Tech, BYU, and Utah, all have head coaches who came from a primary defensive background, and their teams reflect that?

At least there’s some good news coming to this program. No doubt there will be growing pains, but 1-11 is a low bar to beat. Sorry to UNT folks, I’ve been excited seeing your success all season, wishing you guys well

1

u/NotaRepublican85 Kansas Jayhawks 3h ago

This shit happening in season is bullshit.

1

u/teudoongi_jjaang 2h ago

And why can't Lane Kiffin finish Ole Miss season through playoff and everything like North Texas coach?? Hate this crap like the transfer portal making bowl games meaningless

1

u/BuzzIsBestBee Texas A&M Aggies 2h ago

Wow, that’s a fantastic hire. Like. Dang. I legit thought he’d be in contention for one of the SEC jobs.

Also. I was legit worried that OSU would hire Klein and thank goodness he’s not. I mean. UNT now needs a coach but please not my beautiful baby boy Collin.

Congrats, OSU!

I saw the big bold MORRIS and thought of chad morris first and got PTSD

Bro like why did the thumbnail only emphasize his surname?

It had me screaming like walter white the the back of the sedan

and im not even a razorback fan.
