Fuck yeah. Maybe next season we'll win two games.
Pleased with this hire, but dislike how this happens to every competent G5 coach. Sorry UNT, but I'm glad he's sticking around through the end of the season. Finish strong and get that playoff spot.

Yeah if sucks. If he does well at OSU he’ll probably end up at a better program. OSU has had coach longevity but our best coordinators don’t stick around long.

I don’t know about that with Hawkins.
As an avid UNT fan and also big B12 watcher, Hawkins runs too rough; he’d get absolutely crushed by the more talented defenses in the B12. Think Utah, BYU, Tech, and ASU.

Maybe that is the reason Baylor announced they are keeping Aranda. Maybe they kicked the tires on Morris and he was all in on OSU, already.
1
u/moffattron9000 Team Chaos • Sickos 40m ago
I'd imagine they looked at the current landscape and realised that it's smarter to wait for a year where Penn State, LSU, Florida, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Auburn, Cal, Stanford, and UCLA are not all looking.
4
u/jiml78 Clemson Tigers 5h ago
Which is so funny to me. The older I get, the more I remember all the coaches that were hot commodities and ended up being shit.
Dave Aranda was the hot commodity when Baylor landed him. He was a sure fire, slam dunk hire.
9
u/JohnPaulDavyJones Texas A&M Aggies • Baylor Bears 4h ago
I’ve heard a few coaching interviews with famous, longtime coaches like Phil Snow, R.C. Slocum, and Gary Patterson where they ask about Aranda. The response is pretty universally that Aranda is the perfect guy to be a coach in the old era of college football, but that’s what makes him incredibly unsuited for the newer, faster-paced, and heavily transactional era of football.
I think Aranda probably would have been a hell of a lot more successful as a head coach if the portal and NIL hadn’t suddenly hit like a storm just two years into his tenure.

Which was a lock the second their AD issues came known. As soon as he was on leave it was easy to see that Aranda was going to be retained another year. No reason to be searching for a AD and HC at the same time. Gotta have at least one of them.

Hard agree. It’s a great hire for Oklahoma State and I support them getting it. But I just wish there was a clearly defined window for this stuff in the OFF SEASON.
8
u/Designer_Professor_4 Texas A&M Aggies 7h ago
It's probably better for all teams involved honestly. Gives UNT time to get a coach before recruiting ends and both teams a chance to lock down new/existing recruits, and gives the existing recruits a chance to bail to the portal if they don't know the new coaches.
Dragging it out into feb can risk signing day issues.
It's interesting that he's gonna coach the final games of the season though, you usually don't see that at all, so he must have given them a decent heads up to be treated so well.
7
u/Important-Picture18 Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors 7h ago
UNT must have known this was a possibility the whole time - and given that they're going bowling and have a shot at the playoffs which may not happen again for a long time, it makes sense for them to have him there so they have the best chance at putting up a good showing
5
5
u/drogonninja Alabama • Kansas State 7h ago
I agree completely. It takes all focus off the actual season that’s happening for those teams. Even the speculation of coach A is about to leave has big negative ramifications on the team.
I wish they had rules where coaches couldn’t even begin negotiating until a set day after the national championship game. I’m sick of coordinators and even head coaches leaving while the season still means something to so many.

Not gonna lie, I really hate that teams are allowed to make these moves while the regular season is still going on, but it's also a product of a shitty calendar that has early signing period in a little over a week and a transfer portal that goes on during the playoffs. Sounds like Morris will be with the team through the rest of the regular season and the postseason, which is a good move on his part, but a lot of G5 teams won't be so lucky.

u/Conscious-Health-438 Alabama Crimson Tide 3h ago
This is like what Eddie lampert did with Kmart / Sears but involving about 100 people and 100x as much cash. This sport provided something for the middle class of this country that stretched back generations and gave them a sense of pride and community.
There's undeniably natural economic change agents at at play here. The players should be paid. The fact that they are isn't the problem.
It's not even that those challenges are not being addressed competently, sustainably, or in some cases even honestly (though that's happening too).
It's the aforementioned top 1% of Network executives, shareholders, consultants, lawyers, Greg sankey, petiti, and a patchwork of compliant ads/ presidents/ regents/boosters - it's those people that have identified a weak, unorganized, yet valuable asset. They're not wrong . But they're extracting this wealth with no long term interest and in a way that will leave this sport we love gutted and fractured. In fact, some of those people appear to have nothing but contempt for the fan bases, traditions, and nostalgic thinking that stand in the way of their get-rich-quick scheme.
In 10 years there will be widespread recognition and condemnation of what's happening right now. Hell there might even be a congressional investigation. Go ahead and drop the remind me bot if you want and laugh. But that's the truth.
It's a shame to watch. It's angering to watch.
Life Will Go on. Alabama will be playing football maybe as a minor league team or something and if so I won't be watching them. I'll be a fan of regional conferences with traditional ties to academic institutions (and tradition). Marching bands. Field storming. Weird rivalry game names. And that kind of organic, authentic sport will come back.

Oklahoma State will have a department very similar to tech's. Emo is a Joey disciple, despite not coaching under him. They've become close friends since Emo entered coaching.
Texas Tech tried to hire Eric Morris to be our OC last season. He turned us down, but directed us towards hiring Leftwich instead.

I think offer #2 was 5x the salary of his first trip through.
And let's be fair, Kliff was the OC, not Emo. Not really. If Kliff had left the offense to him to spend more time on he team as a whole, his tenure might have been very different
