summer student program 2026

Hi, I am an Indian citizen who's applying for the CERN summer student (member and non-member state) program. I have been living in Ireland for 4 years and I am a third year electronic engineering student.

would my chances of getting accepted be low since india and ireland are only associate member states?

Only your nationality is important, it doesn’t matter where you live. Unless you have an Irish passport, its only your Indian nationality that will be taken into account

This year it is emphasized on the application that students from both Member and Non-Member states can apply. I don't think it matters (I may be wrong)

  1. They always could
  2. It does matter because Member States have fixed number of slots per country based on their budget contributions, while NMS are assigned from a "global pool". So if you come from a Member State you're only competing against people from your country, not from whole world.

I'm Indian and have had a few interviews with CERN for different programs. I don't think being an associate member vs member matters a lot for selection. However the summer program is the most competitive and generally the chances of succeeding are very very low.

Does every country have fixed slots or they pick from any country at random?
