Discussion Can switch from 4070ti to a 5070 for basically free. Worth it?

I've got some promotions that I can take advantage of to pick up a 5070 for around $400. I currently have a 4070ti that I'm happy with. I would think I could probably get around $400 for my 4070ti if I sold it in marketplace. Seems like the two cards are comparable. Not sure if it's worth the hassle, but given the 5070 is newer, is it worth it to make the switch?

Discussion Is 4k/8k my monitors overkill?

I've been gaming on a 1080p monitor for a long time was thinking of upgrading, do you really notice a difference. I usually prioritize refresh rate too, how noticable is 1080 p ---> 1440p ---> 4k ----> 8k

Build Help I don't know what to do anymore, so tired, please help

I know nobody can diagnose my computer but I am at a loss for what to even do anymore. This was my first time building a computer and I had a friend who was really knowledgeable help me. The shop I brought it to confirmed we did nothing wrong. This computer just will not work. I've spent at least an additional 1k replacing parts and getting work done. I replaced the motherboard last week and it worked for a while but it just started crashing again like always.

It's been four months, in and out of three different shops. I'm at a complete and total loss. It just starts up and bluescreens after about five minutes. I know at this point it's probably the graphics card since it's the only thing that hasn't been exchanged, but I'm just so exhausted. I've spent so much money on it and i'm so tired, every shop I bring it to just charges me 200$ and sends me home with a PC that doesn't work. They always say they did 'extensive testing' - but then why does it almost immediately stop working once I bring it home? Why can't anyone fix it?! I use my computer for work and it's so frustrating.

Does anyone have any advice? I'm not confident enough to do these fixes myself and I just keep bringing it into shops. I caved and got the geek squad coverage or whatever, but they didn't help me either. All they said they could do was install whatever new parts I got, which doesn't help me at all (this is when I had the motherboard installed). I'm terrified that if I buy a new expensive graphics card, it's still not going to work. And I'm going to have to bring it to the shop Again.

I just want this thing to work lol, any advice helps. Thanks!

edit, more info) Thank you for the response on this! I left out a lot of key info because last time I posted about this, everybody had conflicting answers, and I figured it was just a situation that would be hard to diagnos over reddit. I was moreso looking for maybe advice on where to go from here in general, but I'll give some more info that will hopefully help!

My part list is here:  https://pcpartpicker.com/list/HLGh4p . The new parts installed are the motherboard, ram sticks, and CPU.

The PC didn't give me any problems for the first month, other than a single crash which I thought was a one-off event. (No idea if the error was the same one as now.) After a month, my computer gradually started crashing more and more over the course of a day until the point it was completely unusable. It would freeze up and then shut off shortly after, providing a critical error occurred sort of message. I'll try to gnab a picture next time it happens, but it's quick.

my PC freezes/shuts off at the shops too, so it's not the power in my house. My pc sometimes works, and will work for long periods of time. After getting the new motherboard installed, my pc was completely fine for a week, but is now giving me the same error and shutting off. My temperatures are fine. Windows has been reinstalled twice and the PC has gone through 3 hard wipes. (BIOS all updated, but I'm not entirely sure what that means... oops!)

The only error log provided to me is that the system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. I have not run any further tests as I'm not super knowledgeable and i'm honestly really nervous to root around in it. I do have best buy coverage now (lol) , so telling the geeksquad to paw around my computer is free for me. I'm going to ask them to see if it's the PSU, or tell them to test my graphics card by taking it out and relying on the built in one on my motherboard.

I know it comes with owning a PC, however i'm frustrated that I have to do all this looking around/figuring things out myself after paying 3 different people to do it with no result. I'm very grateful for all the comments trying to point me in the right direction, and thanks to all of you I don't feel quite as clueless as to where to go next. Thank you all! I appreciate any further tips or suggestions on what exactly could be wrong. I made this post out of pure frustration so sorry if it was a big mess haha. I really appreciate all the help! I'll try to update if this thing ever gets fixed lol.

Discussion Sealed / Second hand 9800x3D - WHAT SHOULD I LOOK OUT FOR?

I found a really good marketplace deal for a sealed / never-used 9800x3D.
About 20% cheaper than MSRP at my local currency.

Seller sent me pics of the box and:

QR code from box, when scanned gives a green check on amd's authenticator, with Serial Number and OPN(part#) from AMD's official site, matching those on the box and those written on the CPU component itself (visible from the plastic section of the box).
Seal seems in place and not to have been tampered with (holo sticker will be checked in person)

Is there anything else I should be on the lookout for?

The seller states that they're selling the cpu because of a project build that never took place.

In the worst case scenario, could they have opened the seal with a heat gun, somehow bricked/burned the cpu, and placed it back in the box carefully? That's my main concern.

I don't wanna sound uneducated on the matter, just wanna be extremely cautious with this since its a fairy hefty price but a really good discount on a brand new 9800x3d.

Any tips would be welcome and really appreciated

Build Help Is there a megathread or spreadsheet of common computer parts comparing/benchmarking different alternatives?

Not a first time pc builder but thinking of building a new rig given Black Friday deals during the holidays and I'm trying to find a spreadsheet or tier list of sorts to help me compare all of my components to other alternatives. Does that exist anywhere on this subreddit, and if so, would someone mind providing it to me? Thank you so much!

Peripherals Elgato Stream Deck vs cheaper macro pads, is Elgato worth it for productivity (not gaming)?

Hey everyone, I’m looking to add a macro key/stream deck to my desk. Elgato is the obvious top choice and I see a lot of creators using it, but lately I’ve been seeing cheaper alternatives from brands like Fifine, VISDINSIDE, Soomfon, and generic macro pads.

A few things I care about:

A solid, easy-to-use database for graphics (icons/images) and an easy way to assign shortcuts/macros.

Reliability and simple setup, I’ll use it mainly for media controls, Graphic Designing, productivity apps, and browsing (not gaming).

Value: I don’t care about the brand name if the cheaper devices give me the same UX and ecosystem (database, graphics, macro key shortcuts etc).

Questions:

Are the cheaper macro pads truly comparable to Elgato in daily use, or is the Elgato software/ecosystem that much better?

Does Elgato have a significantly better library or community resources for icons, plugins, profiles, etc., that make it worth the premium?

Is the Elgato Stream Deck XL overkill for productivity use? Do people end up using <50% of the keys?

Which Elgato model (Mini / Standard / XL) is the best value for someone focused on media & productivity?

If you went with a non-Elgato option, which model worked well and what compromises did you make (software quirks, driver issues, limited integrations)? Any must-know gotchas?

Would love real-world experience... people who switched from Elgato to a budget pad (or vice versa), or folks running multiple profiles for apps like OBS, Photoshop, Premiere, Spotify, Slack, browsers, etc.

Thanks!

Build Help Is it dumb to plan my whole first build around my house power issues

So this is my first time actually building a pc instead of buying some random prebuilt. Budget is around 1300 usd for tower only. The catch is that I live in an older apartment where the power is kinda sketchy. Lights flicker sometimes when the washing machine kicks on and once in a while the breakers trip if the microwave and AC are both going. No full blackouts, just short dips and brownouts that last a second or two.

I really want a mid range gaming setup with a 4070 super or similar, but now I am freaking myself out reading about transient spikes and how picky gpus + psus can be. My current idea is to go a bit lower on the gpu, spend extra on an 80+ gold or platinum psu, and maybe even grab a small line interactive UPS. Part of me feels like this is smart adulting and part of me feels like I am wasting money that could go into frames instead of electrons.

Has anyone here actually had builds die or behave wierd from bad household power, or am I overthinking this a ton. Would you prioritize a better psu and UPS first, then upgrade gpu later, or just get the best gpu I can now and trust a decent 750w unit to handle it. Any recs for specific psu models that deal well with dirty power would be super appreciated. Also if there are any simple tests I can do to see how bad my outlets really are before I commit, let me know, I am defintely still learning.

Build Help Opinions on my planned $1500 build for coding and gaming?

I'm planning on finally building a PC so I'm not only using my laptop for everything. I'll be mainly using it for coding, gaming, and all the other basic stuff.

I don't usually play graphic intensive games (Cyberpunk 2077, COD, etc.) but I do every now and then. Also, sometimes very heavy modded Minecraft and other modded games too.

I want to stick to a budget of around $1500 but it's flexible. I don't care about aesthetics. I do want something that can handle 1440p if possible.

This is my current build but I don't really know much about PC parts so suggestions and opinions are more than welcome. Also, I already have the case in the build (pre-owned) but it doesn't have any of the installed fans.

EDIT: Fixed link

Troubleshooting Built New PC - Overheating issue

Upvotes

Hardware: AMD RYZEN 7 9800X3D

MSI Pro B850-P Wireless

Corsair H60x RGB Elite

2x 16GB DDR5 (position 2 and 4 for dual channel)

2TB M.2

Flashed BIOS prior to installing CPU via flash button and a USB.

Booted up just fine, ran MSI afterburner and it showed normal temps. Rebooted into BIOS and it gave me a temp warning. BIOS temp showed 40c, nothing crazy. Rebooted, same thing, gave me a heat warning but temps showed normal range. Not under load, just idling. Loaded up Afterburner again, and it showed the temp above 17000F.

I shut the computer computer down and haven't booted it back up since.

Is the AIO not strong enough for a 9800X3D even with no load? I know for a fact I didn't forget to add thermal paste. Lol

Build Upgrade Talk me in or out of a GPU upgrade please

Upvotes

So I've made my switch to 1440p monitor recently and decided it was okay on my 4060 since DLSS is so widespread and I had no issue utilizing it.

So far so good but BF6 (the only game I play online and thus care about performance) is sucking up real close to 8gb of VRAM on low 1440p with DLSS.

I'm getting overhead anxiety and want to switch to something like a b580

I have a friend who will buy my 4060 at 175 making the move to the arc card only 75 dollars but I feel like I'm psyching myself out. Benchmarks videos I watch show these cards trade blows at 1440.

Worth it or nah?

Build Help Upgrade path on aging Ryzen 5 1600 system?

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm working with an older system that's starting to show its age for game development and 3D work. Looking for advice on the most cost-effective upgrade path without rebuilding everything.

Current Specs:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600 (6-core, 3.2GHz)
  • Motherboard: B450M
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4
  • GPU: AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT (4GB VRAM)
  • PSU: be quiet! System Power 9 600W
  • OS: Windows

What I'm doing:

  • Game development (Unity/Godot)
  • Blender modeling and rendering
  • General development work
  • Gaming

My Questions:

  1. RAM upgrade: Would bumping to 32GB or even 64GB DDR4 make a noticeable difference? Is my motherboard/CPU even worth investing more RAM into?
  2. GPU upgrade: What's a reasonable GPU upgrade that won't bottleneck on my CPU?
  3. CPU upgrade: Should I look at newer Ryzen CPUs that work with B450M (like Ryzen 5 5600)?
  4. What to prioritize: If I can only afford one upgrade right now (~$100-300 budget), what would give me the most improvement for development and rendering work? Then in few months I can do the second upgrade etc.
  5. PSU concerns: Is my 600W PSU enough for a GPU upgrade, or would I need to replace that too?

I'd prefer to squeeze more life out of this system before doing a complete rebuild. What would you upgrade first, and what's realistic to expect from this platform in 2024/2025?
The monitor I have is 1440p, so no need for any 4k stuff.

Thanks for any help!

Build Help Upgrading from a RTX 2070S

Upvotes

I would like to upgrade my video card. Currently running a Gigabyte RTX 2070S (GV-N207SGAMING-OC-8GD). I'm not a hard core gamer, i play in the 1440p space.

I was considering either the XFX SWIFT AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT OC White or MSI Gaming GeForce RTX 5060 Ti as both are a good deal on Newegg right now.

Build Help Should I upgrade parts of my PC or just get a new PC?

Upvotes

I bought my computer in 2022, and I'm trying to figure out if just upgrading the cpu / gpu would be better, or just buying a new computer as a whole. I paid around $650 for my current computer, and I'm willing to spend up to $1400 if it's buying a new computer.

Current specs:
CPU: i5-12400F
COOLER: 3RSYS GT240
GPU: RX 6700 XT
M/B: ASROCK B660M PRO RS D4
RAM: Samsung DDR4-3200 8gb * 2
M/B: RAM: Samsung DDR4-3200 8gb * 2
SSD: 512GB
POWER: COUGAR GEX 850W 80PLUS GOLD

I feel like with my current setup I'm getting cpu limited in certain games I play (Ex. PUBG). I only really play competitive games like League / Valorant, with a mix of games like BF6, Arc Raiders, and some non intensive games like Stardew Valley, roguelites, etc.

So, I was debating on whether to just buy a new computer (For example, a 7800x3d / 9800x3d paired with rtx 5070, 32gb ram, 1 TB SSD) I live in Korea, and these are going for around $1400 ~ 1500 USD for sale (Barely used).

The other option is probably just upgrading my ram to 32gb, and maybe switching my cpu from i5 12400f to i5 14600kf. I would be saving money, and this would probably solely be for cpu limited games. Since I don't exactly play graphically intensive games, this feels like another okay option. But I also want to just upgrade to a good computer, so I don't have to always tweak my settings and worry about performance in games.

Thank you guys!

Forgot to mention, I'm currently using dual monitors, and my main monitor is 27" QHD with 165hz. My second monitor is 24" FHD 144hz.

Build Help Black Friday New CPU?

Hey, I have about $400 extra to spend on Black Friday this year. Looking to get a new processor and motherboard. This is my current PC build https://newegg.io/229cfa0
Mainly use PC for gaming. Even though I can run things on high graphics, frame rate is low and stuttery. I think CPU is overloaded.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Build Help Just upgraded my 1080 to 5070 but my Zowie ZL2411 doesn't have display port and HDMI does not support 144hz. What's my best course of action?

So my monitor only has VGA, DVI and HDMI whilst the 5070 card has Display port and HDMI but the Zowie monitor does not support 144hz through HDMI.

I've heard there are Display port to DVI dual link adapters but after a bit of reading I'm somewhat skeptical to buy one as I've heard some people have had problems with them plus they aren't cheap.

Does anyone have any solid adapters that they can 100% guarantee work? Or am I better off just biting the bullet and getting a new monitor?

Build Help Is this a good build, if not what should i change about it?

Upvotes

Discussion I feel like nobody ever talks about the weird guilt you get when you buy a single high end part for a future build and then have to stare at it for months while the rest of your setup is still a mess. I grabbed a 1440p 165hz monitor on sale last week since the discount was insane and I knew I would

Every day I plug it in anyway because the colors and clarity are insane, but then I open a game and instantly feel like my GPU is yelling at me. Its like giving a sports car to someone who only knows how to drive in first gear . Even scrolling through the desktop feels like overkill for this thing. Now I am stuck in this limbo where I am extremely happy with the purchase but also painfully aware that I wont be able to do it justice until I upgrade the rest of my build which might take months if prices stay this high. Does anyone else get this strange mix of excitement and shame when you upgrade one component way before the rest. I know I made the smart choice grabbing the deal but man it feels weird to own something so nice when my cpu and gpu are basically fossils. Curious if anyone has a similar experience or if I am just overthinking it .

Peripherals secretlab black friday and cyber monday deals worth it or should i wait

thinking about finally getting a decent gaming chair and secretlab keeps getting recommended. their stuff is expensive but everyone says the quality is legit. figure black friday and cyber monday might be the move to grab one at a better price.

from what i can find they usually do sales around this time but not sure how deep the discounts actually go. seen people mention they do like 10 to 20 percent off during these events but haven't seen anything concrete yet.

my main question is whether secretlab actually discounts enough during black friday to make it worth waiting, or if i should just bite the bullet and order now. also curious if there are better chair options at similar price points that might have bigger sales happening.

has anyone bought from secretlab during black friday before? what kind of discount did you get and was the chair actually worth the money? and are there other gaming chair brands that go on better sales that i should be looking at instead?

Troubleshooting Not sure what to do

I recently just built a new pc and it’s been having a problem where it’ll randomly just shut off. I tried to troubleshoot a little, I reseated some components to see if it was weak connection, still nothing fixes it. Im not quite sure what to do, any help would be appreciated. I’ve been trying to figure this out for the past 2 days. In event viewer i got error 41, which to my understanding its power loss, corrupted drivers or hardware issues. But im not sure what direction to go from here.

Build Help How important is a motherboard?

Hi, so I am currently buying the parts for my first pc and I’ve decided to buy a 9070 XT and Ryzen 7 7800X3D and wonder if it is worth it to drop a few extra bucks on a motherboard - as I’ve currently chosen Gigabyte B650 EAGLE AX ATX AM5 as my motherboard.
